Martin Scorsese Says ‘Home' Could Likely Be His Next Film

A few months ago, I reported that Martin Scorsese’s “The Life of Jesus” and “Sinatra” had been delayed. A few days later, Variety’s Clayton Davis added that both films were supposed to be shot this year but have now been postponed indefinitely.

Some have speculated that ‘Sinatra’ was nixed due to the late singer’s family estate not giving the greenlight for Scorsese to shoot the biopic. Meanwhile, I heard that “The Life of Jesus” kept having script revisions, but will eventually get shot in the near future, with Andrew Garfield attached to star.

I’ve been saying this for a few months now, but I believe that Scorsese’s next feature will not be either of those, but rather his adaptation of Marilynne Robinson’s “Home.” He’s now hinting further at that direction in an interview with AP.

[“Life of Jesus”] is an option but I’m still working on it. There’s a very strong possibility of me doing a film version of Marilynne Robinson’s “Home,” and that’s a scheduling issue.

Scorsese has been working on “Home” for around two years now. Todd Field and Kent Jones are said to be working on Robinson’s other two novels in the trilogy. Here’s the synopsis:

The Reverend Boughton’s hell-raising son, Jack, has come home after twenty years away. Artful and devious in his youth, now an alcoholic carrying two decades worth of secrets, he is perpetually at odds with his traditionalist father, though he remains his most beloved child. As Jack tries to make peace with his father, he begins to forge an intense bond with his sister Glory, herself returning home with a broken heart and turbulent past.

Scorsese goes on to state that he’d like to make a documentary about the stories from “my mother and father from the past, and how they grew up. Stories about immigrants which tied into my trip to Sicily”.

The iconic filmmaker does admit that “there’s been a long period after “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which was shot in 2021, and that he’s not getting any younger:

Even though I don’t like getting up early, I’d like to shoot a movie right now. Time is going. I’ll be 82. Gotta go […] You’re guided by: Is it worth doing at this late stage in your life? Can you make it through? Is it worth your time? Because now, the most valuable thing aside from people I love, my family, is time. That’s all there is.

Scorsese is getting restless. He wants to be on a movie set again. Don’t be surprised if he shoots “Home” next year. ‘

More Clues Surface About Paul Thomas Anderson's ‘The Battle of Baktan Cross'

Sean Penn, who has a supporting role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Battle of Baktan Cross,” donated a coin to the cast and crew of the film before shooting wrapped —both sides can be seen below (via r/paulthomasanderson).

As you can see, Penn’s character's name is most likely Col. Steven J. Lockjaw. He’s part of an ensemble cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, and Regina Hall, Alana Haim, Teyana Taylor, Wood Harris, and Benicio del Toro.

One of the sides has “A Paul Thomas Anderson Motion Picture & Ballroom Extravaganza” stamped on it. The second coin has “Presented by Col. Steven J. Lockjaw,” “MKU,” and “Wet n’ Stinky Fuck Devil’s Brigade.”

“MKU” seemingly stands for MANKIND UNITED RIO DUARTE which might or might not be connected to a dissolved 1930s California-based secret cult.

While specific plot details are currently being kept under wraps, ‘Baktan Cross’ is set in a contemporary setting and is being described as Anderson's “most commercial” film to date. Penn’s behind-the-scenes memento is sure to get people theorizing further about the film’s plot, which is rumored to be PTA’s modern-day take on Thomas Pynchon’s “Vineland.”

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that PTA’s latest has a budget of $140M. Original reporting had it costing anywhere between $100-$125 million. Jeff Sneider claims it might actually be $175M.

The film is due in theaters on August 8, 2025.

The “Bad Hombres" of ‘Baktan Cross'

Capture.PNG?format=2500w

Below is the wrap gift to the cast & crew of Paul Thomas Anderson/Leonardo DiCaprio’s next film, which might be titled “The Battle of Baktan Cross.”

Does the “bad hombres” refer to Donald Trump’s comments that there are lots of “bad hombres” ilegally crossing the border? Hey, I’m not making this stuff up — there’s been word of the film potentially having “MAGA elements” to its story.

For the time being, things are being kept very hush hush about PTA’s latest film, and at this point we can only theorize what it might be about. Warner Bros has set up an August 2025 release date for the film, although I recently heard that it might get pushed to June or July.

No word if Leo will be involved in this but since Marty hardly work with other actors anymore I assume he is until someone says otherwise.

Martin Scorsese's ‘Home' Lands at Apple Studios

So, it turns out that Martin Scorsese, Kent Jones and Todd Field are very serious in their intentions of adapting author Marilynne Robinson’s acclaimed “Gilead” novels.

Scorsese is first up as he’s set to direct “Home,” with Field and Jones writing the screenplay. I was told this morning that Apple Studios has landed the film, and that the plan is shoot it in early 2025. A cast is being quietly assembled, with one key A-lister already lined up for the lead role.

Scorsese previously teamed up with Apple on “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and is executive producing their “Cape Fear” series, starring Javier Bardem, which had been announced yesterday. “Killers of the Flower Moon” had a robust theatrical rollout last fall, and one would expect the same thing to happen for “Home.”

“Home” will probably be a more intimate film for Scorsese, not as epic as the previous ones of the last 20 years, most of which were these big-budget epics. I presume this will be a very faithful retelling of Robinson’s prize-winning novel.

Scorsese, Field and Jones are also turning Robinson’s “Jack” into a screenplay and, I’m told, Field is eyeing to adapt “Gilead” as his next film. It should be noted that Robinson used characters and events from her landmark 2004 novel “Gilead” to publish three more books: “Home” (2008) “Lila” (2014) and “Jack” (2020).

In “Gilead,” an aged narrator, Ames, who has lived his entire life in a small Iowa town, is writing down his life story for his young son. The story of “Gilead” and Ames grew into this series of books, with each of those novels retelling the events of “Gilead” from the perspective of a different character.

There is no word yet on who would direct “Jack,” maybe Jones? With that said, what we’re seeing here is a uniquely ambitious trilogy taking shape. Jones, a former film critic, directed 2019’s critically acclaimed low-budget indie “Diane,” and is set to shoot his sophomore effort —“Late Fame” —next year.

Scorsese’s reps and Apple were reached for comment, but were unavailable to respond as of this publishing. I’ll update the article accordingly.
