@ArianaVSCouture I agree. for example GUESS, She had to share the campaign first with Ingrid Seynhaeve and the next with Laetitia. Again, Laetitia acquiered a solo campaign the next season, I mean... why??? The same with SI, The spot on Tyra with that shared first appearence, but next year Tyra all alone on the 97 cover, valeria just inside. Valeria appeared on the argentinian version of IS 1997 magazine but just in her country, not worldwide. The only one who gave Valeria a mainstream spotlight was Gianni (not Donatella)after Guess and the first versace show (versus sprng 95 in october of 94) Gianni made Valeria a house-hold model, catalogs, adverts, runway, special events, etc. Giorgio Armani used to said "I don't like supermodels on my shows" but i don't know if that was a compliment or the opposite ahah, because he worked with Valeria on his shows since 96 to 98.
There are some theories about that you said (pinch of salt) 1) she wanted to be payed high fees? 2) her look was very similar to Claudia, Daniela, Karen, Kirsty, Meghan that her strategy was not to appear a lot so the industry wouldn't be bored or hasted about her? 3) colleague with enough "power" to don't let her to get many jobs? 4) she was very "saint" like try not to do smoking pictures, nude pictures, lesbian style pictures and stufff so photographers or editors were not so interested on that image/style of her?
why on earth Valeria didn't get a contract with Revlon (sh's got an angel face) or CoverGirl? why VOGUE Italia and US never ever let her to grace a cover or at least a supplement cover? even worst, she didn't grace the Argentinian edition of Vogue, that's cruel, I mean REALLY cruel! just the Brazilian edition to a model like Valeria?
I think to be so look a like with Claudia was not good for her at all. It was like ohhh we've got Claudia, why work with her look alike?
What I really appreaciate bout Valeria is she used to have a soft-light walk on the catwalk, sophisticated, ellegant, sexy at a fair point, she sells the clothes not her image/persona.
she was left out of work with big couture designers like Saint Laurent, Westwood, Chanel (because of Claudia) Givenchy, Galliano, Jacobs, Lacroix. Her career was 90 per cent ready to wear, 10 per cent couture. Gianfranco Ferré stopped working with her arguing that she was quite muscular and wide hips. (don't forget she was a swimmer all her childhood and adolescence)
I know this sounds pretty gossip ahahah but there were really tense moments from Claudia to Valeria. Valeria always (or at the beggining at least) felt like a compliment to be compared with supermodel Nº1 Claudia. But not Claudia. She got tired of being questioned about Valeria, to hear things like "your younger sister", "your clone", "your twin", "you could be replaced by her". And I bet she felt jelous or threatened at some point. Claudia took matters into her own hands.
Harper's Bazaar's editor asked Peter Lindbergh to made an editorial joining Valeria and Claudia. At first Claudia accepted to make the photo shoot. But... When the day arrived and she was face to face with Valeria, she started to change her mood... They and Peter made a few shots and suddenly Claudia left the scene. When she came back... The photographer and his assistant asked Valeria to leave the photoshoot session with some silly excuses. Well, that's all... we've got what we wanted, we will continuo with Claudia alone. They called a taxi cab to take Valeria's to the hotel. That was in Miami. at night Valeria's recieved a thanks/apologies letter and a bouquete of flowers (strange, isn't it?)
The editorial was going to be called "Lazy Day TWINS" and ended to called "Lazy-Days". Just published one picture of Valeria (the one that Claudia and she are playing ping pong) and the rest plenty of Claudia.
Valeria didn't say a thing about that day till a few years ago, but the press and us gossip magazines spread the rumour that day. Claudia asked the photographer to dismissed Valeria or she wouldn't continue the photo session. Claudia was asked if she knew Valeria and she said "I don't know any Valeria, sorry there are so many blonde new models, I don't know who she is" and Valeria said to the argentinian press that she worked with Claudia and she was very kind but she lies, and the proof will be the harper's magazine that would come the next month.
Another stressfull situation was when FENDI sisters wanted to work with Valeria, the designer was Karl Lagerfeld and the sisters his assistants. Karl tried everything to convince them not to include Valeria on the show. But the Fendi sisters wanted Valeria so she walked for the show, sharing the catwalk with Claudia.
Valeria said there was several times that she was rejected from shows surprisingly just a few hours before the show. Shows that Claudia was included, curiosly. But at the end, Valeria gained so much fame that Claudia had to calm down, because they crossed each other permanently. I bet the problems with Claudia lasted 1 year and a half, not more.
