Button aiming for top ten in Bahrain 29 March 2008 Fresh from a strong drive to tenth place in the Malaysian Grand Prix last weekend, Jenson Button goes to Bahrain confident Honda can continue to knock on the door of the top ten. "We are pleased with our performance so far this season and it was very valuable to complete the full race distance in Malaysia last weekend," Button said. "Our overall position in the midfield pack is encouraging, however we have to make a further step to be competing for points on a regular basis. With no opportunity for testing since the season began, we will be using the data gathered in Australia and Malaysia to maximise our performance at what will be another very hot race in Bahrain. I'm hopeful that we will be knocking on the door of the top ten in qualifying once again." "I'm a big fan of Bahrain as a country and I also really enjoy the circuit as there are some great fast flowing sections where you can really push the car," he added. "Confidence under braking is the key to a quick lap. You have to believe in the car's performance and have full confidence that you can stop effectively. The sand blowing onto the tarmac can be a challenge as you never know how the grip levels will change."

Ajax Target Gourcuff Wants Out Of Milan Frustrated by shortage of opportunities at Milan, French starlet Yoann Gourcuff has hinted he’s thinking of leaving the club at the end of the season, just months after extending his contract until mid-2012. Son of Lorient boss, Christian, the highly-rated U-21 midfielder stole the headlines last season with the Rossoneri. Even though he’d only joined them from Stade Rennais in a 4.5-million-euros deal, he played in 34 matches and scored twice to help them win the European Champions League. Carletto Ancelotti’s side went on to also claim both the World Cup and the European Super Cup since the summer. But Gourcuff has no longer been a first-choice player, his appearances been limited down to 18, with just four of them for the whole 90 minutes. “Obviously annoying” And in an interview with Ouest-France newspaper, the 21-year-old central midfielder admits this is a frustrating situation for him. “The first six months of the season were very difficult. When I extended my contract with Milan last summer, club bosses had told me that they would count more on me after my first year there. But this season certain footballers have been playing together for a very long time and it’s hard to take their place. Especially annoying is the fact I haven’t been able to put in a string of outings, even after a good game.” Gourcuff stresses that he hasn’t been able to discuss the matter with Ancelotti (“It doesn’t work like that at Milan”), although insisting that limited appearances are not blocking his progress as a player. “Not a waste of time” “One never wastes his time at this club. I’m happy with my everyday life and I work together with great footballers in an exceptional environment. It’s an enormous experience for a 21-year-old player and I can’t really say I regret it.” OM and Ajax Olympique de Marseille sporting director José Anigo has openly declared that the French giants are preparing an offer for Gourcuff, while Italian media suggest Ajax are also interested. “I haven’t made a decision yet. I leave my door open to all proposals. I will first talk to Milan directors to find out their ideas on my future. My father will also discuss with them.” When asked whether he would consider returning to his homeland, Gourcuff refused to rule out any possibility. “Why not? Italy, Spain, England… I don’t exclude anything. But I will decide in May.” The Van Basten connection Voetbal International magazine suggests that the Italian giants would only allow the Frenchman to move to another club on loan, with Ajax counting on their next coach to win the race for them. Marco van Basten, a former Milan icon, has allegedly already made contact.

AC Milan youngster Pato happy with Pele comparison tribalfootball.com - March 28, 2008 AC Milan superkid Alexandre Pato admits scoring on debut for Brazil brought him to tears this week. "I called my parents straight after the game and I was crying with the emotion," he told Milan's website. "There's nothing you can say. I was so emotional and I wanted to thank my parents, as they deserve the credit for everything that I am achieving because of the education they gave me, and the fact that they were always close to me. "There's a great feeling of joy at having made my Brazil debut. I would have had this chance before but I was denied by an injury." Pato has been compared to Pele and added: "Without a doubt the comparisons make me happy. "He is an idol to me, and a phenomenon."

    From Barcelona:
  24. Raúl: We Have To Perform At Home Raúl believes that crunch time is approaching for Real Madrid as the league championship is usually decided in the last nine or ten matches of the season. Los Merengues need to keep their nerve after losing at home to Valencia last weekend and the club captain stated that every game will now be like final. In their remaining nine matches, Madrid have five at home and those include the encounter with Sevilla this weekend and the visit of Barcelona next month. "Each game is going to be like a final and we will need the fans completely behind us. We know that the five remaining home games will be crucial, starting on Sunday against Sevilla," Raúl said. "We need to pick up all three points to put an end to this negative run of form. In the final ten games of the season is when titles are decided." Raúl is a veteran at Madrid, but he has never won back-to-back titles with the club and is keen to help the team achieve the feat for the first time since 1990. "It would be great to win it as it would be the first time that the club has one it twice in succession during my time here," he continued. "We are top and have a four-point advantage over second place because we have worked hard and played well to achieve that." Despite losing to a late goal against Valencia, Raúl has revealed that he was encouraged by some of the football that Madrid managed. "The team played very well and were very good for long periods, but it was just a shame that we could not find a third goal to take the game," he continued.
