Fergie: Mourinho in a circus at Real Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has underlined how tough a job Jose Mourinho has at Real Madrid. Mourinho joined the Spanish giants from Inter Milan this summer and is expected to start delivering results immediately. The Santiago Bernabeu is seething after two failed campaigns, a fact made more painful by the fact that bitter Catalan rivals have won all the trophies and the plaudits. Ferguson believes Real have made the right choice by going for the Portuguese coach with the Midas touch. In comments reported by the Daily Mirror, he said: "Real Madrid are better off without question. "You can expect Real to improve with Jose this year. The Real Madrid job is the hardest challenge in his career. "I've spoken to Jose a couple of times. He's not managing a normal football club, sometimes he's managing a circus, sometimes a fantastic outfit in terms of the quality of the football they can produce and the kind of players they always want. "It's a very difficult club to manage." Mourinho's Real currently sits top of the La Liga standings, with Valencia in second on goal difference.

"Mourinho's shadow lingers at Inter" Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes that Jose Mourinho's boots are too big to fill at Inter Milan. The wily Scot belives that it is impossible for Rafa Benitez, who replaced the Portuguese at Inter Milan during the summer, to match up to the shadow of Mourinho at the Serie A club. "It's tough to take the place of someone who has won as much as Mourinho," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "One day whoever succeeds me at United will have the same handicap. "In all cases, every coach who has respect for himself must give their own identity to the team. "And you can be certain that beating Inter will always be difficult. "The European champions have all of my respect. I bet on Inter against Barcelona in the semi-final. Jose prepared for it like a champion. And what a phenomenon Cambiasso was on Messi." Ferguson also gave his tips for who would be at the top end of the Premiership by the end of the current season. "Chelsea finished last season filling in the weaker teams with goals," he said. "Anyway they keep winning like champions and who wants to win this Premier League must definitely square up with Chelsea. "Manchester United have started discreetly, like Arsenal. Us and the Gunners will be in competition with Chelsea until the end. "It's too soon to make predictions, but we cannot forget Tottenham's progress. "[Gerard] Houllier will need time at Aston Villa. The disappointment is Everton. I had them among the favourites: they only have two points. "Manchester City haven't started very well, but with the squad [Roberto] Mancini has they definitely have to be in the running. I have seen them beat Liverpool 3-0, showing power and quality. "Mancini has bought half a new team. It's difficult to find the right chemistry quickly. When they find continuity they will be a threat." Ferguson also admitted being a fan of Manchester City's Mario Balotelli. "Mario Balotelli has extraordinary potential for a 20-year-old. It's a shame about his injury," added the Scotsman. "We hope to see him in action soon. Federico Macheda is only 19 and he is doing magnificently. "What a future for the Italian national team when they are both ready together. I am very satisfied with 'Chicco'. He is simply fantastic."

"Mourinho is a fantastic coach" Casillas: "We have just gotten started and there is a long road ahead" Realmadrid.com Iker Casillas drew all the attention at a promotional event on Thursday afternoon, during which he commented on the long season that lies ahead. "We are a young team and must therefore take it step by step. We currently sit atop the table, the team is putting up good numbers and we are able to put forth our best football." "I didn't see the Barça match. I was only able to see Athletic play, but Barça will always be up there. We have just gotten started and there is a long road ahead." "Real Madrid have a lot of games to play in the Champions League, La Liga and the King's Cup, but we are used to playing so many matches." "Mourinho is open to anything. He knows what he wants and he is a fantastic coach. Our goal is to have a good season. We have a good relationship. He has coached some great teams and great players and has been very successful in doing so." "Cristiano Ronaldo is a fantastic person and a great teammate. We share the goal of playing hard and winning matches. He isn't selfish at all. All he wants is to score a lot of goals."

Fernando Torres
Fowler: Give Torres more of the ball Kop legend Robbie Fowler said Liverpool need to find Fernando Torres more often to get the best out of the striker. Torres has looked a shadow of the player who set Anfield on fire in his first season. Another Liverpool great Jamie Redknapp had slammed his performance against Birmingham as "diabolical." The Spaniard looked as poor in the first half against Manchester United on Sunday but suddenly sprang to life after the interval to win a penalty and free-kick for his side - both of which were converted by Steven Gerrard. Fowler thinks El Nino is still working his way back from injury and fans should be patient with him. In comments reported by Liverpool's official site, the Australian said: "It takes time to get back up to the top level after a long period of injury, and he's had more than his fair share in recent times. "Even just a fraction of a percentage makes a massive difference at his level, and in a couple of weeks he'll probably look a different man again. "When he's at the top of his game then his touch and pace are a deadly combination, but it's probably not quite there yet as he's still coming back from a series of injuries that can affect that first explosive moment on the ball. "You can never question his contribution to the team, because he is prepared to put in a shift up front on his own against some of the best - and toughest - defenders in the world, and believe me that's not easy. "I watched with interest as Liverpool failed to find him in the first half at United, and the results were obvious. In the second though, their tactics changed, and suddenly he created two goals. That showed he is not as far away as people are making out. "Give him the ball and he will get results, which was evident after the break at Old Trafford." Although Torres will be rested for the Carling Cup match against Northampton, he will have another chance to shine when Liverpool host Sunderland on Saturday.

Mourinho: "I am satisfied given the circumstances" "We played better when we were both down to ten men" Realmadrid.com / Translation by Michael J. O'Donnell Jose Mourinho was satisfied with the victory against Espanyol. "We took three points and grabbed the first position on the table. We'll see if we are still at the top tomorrow night after Valencia's game. We had more chances to score in the second half and grew calmer. This team still needs to improve, but above all it needs to rest." "I am satisfied given the circumstances because it isn't easy to play on a potato field, it isn't easy to play a third game having had only two days to recover, and it isn't easy to face an opponent that had nothing to lose. My team played a great game. These are the easiest games for teams who are between the fifth and tenth position of the table: they feel no pressure, they are motivated, and they are quality sides. It's great for them if they win, but if they lose by playing well their morale is boosted nonetheless." "We played well with Khedira and Arbeloa because the team was tighter. Our three central midfielders made us solid and we began to put more pressure, to make easier steals and to keep more possession in attack while our forwards had their backs covered. Balance comes from playing and thinking at the same time. We found balance right at the end, when the pitch grew larger because the game lacked two players but it was really smaller because our side was tighter. I hesitated at first to make two substitutions after Espanyol were left with ten men, but I had already made my mind up and my team needed to be tighter. We controlled the game better from then on." "Real Madrid only have one coach who can make decisions, and he always makes them after thinking carefully about them. He sometimes uses intuition, but most of his decisions are carefully thought through. My team was tired and it wasn't tight; we were beginning to lose control for the first time in the game. Khedira, Xabi and Lass made the lines come closer together." "The team is tired because it still isn't a proper team and the coach doesn't use rotations. I usually rotate four or five players successfully once my teams are constructed after years of work. I will do this with Real Madrid whenever I feel the team is in a different stage of construction. We will be at a different level in February if we reach the next round in the Champions League. I will use rotations then. I prefer not to use them for now." "I prefer to talk about referees when they do a good job. I talked about the ref in San sebastian because it was a pleasure to see such a good performance. I'd rather not comment on the ref today. He wasn't fortunate and we were left with ten men. Espanyol were innocent enough to earn a red card just after this happened. I was too far to see Higuain being elbowed. I haven't seen the penalty on a TV yet, so I cannot comment." "I work with my players to improve on defending from free-kicks. You have to protect your face when in doubt. You must jump or stay still when defending a free-kick depending on what the coach tells you, but you should never use your arms. These are negative doubts, but the referee didn't do a good job tonight. His decision didn't really influence the score, which is what matters and what we all ultimately want."- Football
"Mourinho like a cheating husband" Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti has compared Jose Mourinho's exit to "a husband cheating on his wife". After joining the Italians in 2008, Mourinho led them to the Scudetto before winning a historic treble with the club in 2009/10. However, despite pleas from the players and club hierarchy, the Portuguese opted to leave when Real Madrid came calling in the summer. Moratti, who had always enjoyed a good relationship with the coach, told calciomercatoweb.it: "It was like a husband cheating on his wife, but seeing as he cares for her and doesn't have the courage to admit to it, he climbed out the window." At one point Moratti had even compared Mourinho to legendary coach Helenio Herrera, but refused to draw the same parallel this time round. "Is Mourinho like Herrera? Football has changed," said the president. "The coaches didn't used to be on the transfer market, but now they are. Mourinho and Herrera do have many things in common: they are genial, professional, but above all do hard work. "‘Il Mago' worked so much and the same can be said of Mourinho." Life under new coach Rafael Benitez has not been the smoothest so far for Inter Milan with both Samuel Eto'o and Diego Milito admitting they've already had differences with the Spaniard.- Jose Mourinho

Real eye fresh Copa del Rey start Real Madrid is keen to avoid complacency when the club play third tier Real Murcia in the Copa del Rey. Madrid suffered one of the biggest humiliations in their illustrious history last season after being dumped out at the same fourth-round stage by another third tier side Alcorcon, who won the first leg 4-0 at home en route to a 4-1 aggregate victory. The previous season, again in the fourth round, Madrid were knocked out by Real Union, who were also playing at the third level of Spanish football, while you have to go back to 1993 for the last time the Spanish giants won the competition. Inaki Alonso, the coach of Murcia, was in charge of Union when they stunned Madrid two years ago. Butragueno, a playing legend at the Bernabeu, said following Wednesday's draw: "Madrid have to be very alert. We've had very bad experiences in other years. It´s not a competition that has given us much joy." Barcelona, who have won a record 25 Copa del Rey crowns - two more than Athletic Bilbao and eight more than Madrid, were also paired against Segunda Division B opposition in the form of Ceuta. Last season's winners Sevilla begin the defence of their crown against a Real Union side who will be looking to repeat their Madrid heroics of a couple of years ago. Europa League champions Atletico Madrid, who lost 2-0 to Sevilla in May's final, face Universidad de Las Palmas while 2009 runners-up Athletic will be well aware of what their opponents Alcorcon are capable of. Villarreal play Polideportivo Ejido for the second time in three seasons after suffering an embarrassing 6-1 aggregate defeat to them in 2008. El Portugalete, the lowest-ranked team left in the competition, take on Getafe. There are four all-Primera Division ties in the fourth round - when the top-flight clubs enter the competition -with Real Sociedad meeting Almeria, Osasuna taking on Deportivo La Coruna, Hercules facing Malaga and Real Mallorca playing Sporting Gijon. The first legs of these ties are scheduled to take place on October 27 with the return meetings being played on November 10. Full draw: Real Murcia v Real Madrid, Real Union v Sevilla, Logrones v Valencia, Ceuta v Barcelona, Polideportivo Ejido v Villarreal, Universidad de Las Palmas v Atletico Madrid, Portugalete v Getafe, Real Betis v Real Zaragoza, Xerez v Levante, Cordoba v Racing Santander, Alcorcon v Athletic Bilbao, Real Valladolid v Espanyol, Real Sociedad v Almeria, Osasuna v Deportivo La Coruna, Hercules v Malaga and Real Mallorca v Sporting Gijon.- Sami Khedira
Khedira: We're not a team yet Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira says the players are yet to come together as a team. With the arrival of Jose Mourinho as well as new signings like Khedira, Mesut Ozil and Angel di Maria, expectations were going through the roof at the Bernabeu. However, los Blancos have not exactly set the season on fire so far, although they remain undefeated. They reached the top of the La Liga table after the 3-0 win over Espanyol on Tuesday and German Khedira feels the side needs some more time. Speaking to the Spanish press, he said:"We are still under construction, and when changing coach and training methods, it remains difficult to win. We are trying to play well, but we know it will be difficult to win every game. "It is normal that those viewing want to see good football. But we must not forget that we have played three games in six days and we have accumulated fatigue." The former Stuttgart man also spoke of the Bernabeu pitch which had earlier been slammed as a "potato field" by Mourinho. "Clearly we are not playing on the best possible pitch. It is not in top condition. But I think from next week it will be better," said Khedira. He also revealed that both he and Ozil were trying to pick up Spanish as quickly as possible. "We understand the instructions from Mourinho and if there is any problems we use English, which is the dominant language of most players. However, both Oezil and I are working very hard to learn Spanish."- Best FASHION magazine

Freiburg 1-2 Schalke Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's late goal gave Schalke their first victory of the season - a 2-1 triumph at 10-man Freiburg. Ivan Rakitic gave Schalke the lead after nine minutes before Papiss Demba Cisse equalised in the 69th minute. Huntelaar struck the winner in the 87th minute before Freiburg were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time when Ivica Banovic saw red. After four straight losses, Schalke coach Felix Magath made five changes to his starting line-up from the side which lost last weekend against Borussia Dortmund, bringing in the likes of Christoph Metzelder and new acquisition Jose Manuel Jurado. Schalke grabbed the lead in the ninth minute as Huntelaar's shot was blocked by Freiburg keeper Oliver Baumann into the path of Rakitic who fired home. Schalke keeper Manuel Neuer did a good job to keep his side in front, fisting away Julian Schuster's free-kick in the 14th minute before Cisse's header seven minutes later went wide of his goal. Baumann showed his class three minutes before the break, saving Lukas Schmitz's low free-kick and then jumping up in time to divert Huntelaar's rebound header. Freiburg went close eight minutes after the break but Metzelder blocked Maximilian Nicu's shot over the crossbar. Freiburg drew level in the 69th minute through top-scorer Cisse. Cedrick Makiadi's pass diverted off Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes into the path of Cisse, who fired past Neuer for his fifth goal of the season. Schalke regained the lead with three minutes to play as Joel Matip streaked down the right side and crossed into the box where Huntelaar poked past Baumann. Freiburg finished the game on a sour note as Banovic was shown a red card for a rash challenge in stoppage time.- Raúl González Blanco
