Bar in L'Officiel magazine Translated and scanned by Tessa86 /monthly_12_2009/post-23568-0-1446054125-74125_thumb.jpg" data-fileid="3013283" alt="post-23568-0-1446054125-74125_thumb.jpg" data-ratio="133.78"> /monthly_12_2009/post-23568-0-1446054125-77092_thumb.jpg" data-fileid="3013284" alt="post-23568-0-1446054125-77092_thumb.jpg" data-ratio="130.72"> /monthly_12_2009/post-23568-0-1446054125-87284_thumb.jpg" data-fileid="3013293" alt="post-23568-0-1446054125-87284_thumb.jpg" data-ratio="131.58"> After some wheeling and dealing, we managed to conquer two days in the busy schedule of Bar Refaeli (24), the famous Israeli supermodel. We meet her in her own country. Israel. Her mother brings her to the hotel in the centre of Tel Aviv and doesn't drive away after her daughter got out of the car. She only does so when she get the call from her daughter that everything is okay inside. Bar wears jeans, a simple black T-shirt and flip-flops. She is not striking tall, not striking thin. But Refaeli's presence never remains unnoticed in her birth country. Tel Aviv is in a great stir because Refaeli is in town. This Israeli has got a star status in her own country and with her personality, she makes sure she keeps that status. Planned career She didn't just got that status out of the blue. Though nobody doubts her beauty and allure, Bar worked towards this stardom her whole life. No spontaneous discovery on the street by a scout from a model agency, but a careful build up career outlined for her by her mother. Tzipi Levine used to be a successful model herself in the '70's and knows how that world works. Bar grew up in the small town Hod Hasharon, North of Tel Aviv. Her parents ran a horse farm where she and her three brothers enjoyed a quiet youth, at reasonable save distance of the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts. Bar has her first modeling job when she is eight months old: promoting baby bibs. By the time she is fifteen she already has a few commercial contracts and a 'Model of the Year' title. Though Bar travels all over the world, Tzipi is still very involved in her daughter's career. Bar has a rock-solid faith in her: 'My mother really knows what's best for me. I truly admire her, she is strong but at the same time gentle and caring.' Indeed, halfway the day Tzipi stops by to check how her daughter is doing. Sexy image The Israeli beauty has posed for campaigns for Garnier, Ralph Lauren and Victoria's Secret and made the covers of international fashion magazines. The peak of her career comes in 2009 when she hears she's the cover model for the prestigious Sports Illustrated SwimsuitCurvy is what they call it [but to most people that is still thin] and she dares to show herself. For most of the photo shoots in her career the 24-year old posed half naked or in a bikini. Her sexy image doesn't disturb her: 'I'm aware of my body and I'm not ashamed of anything. I think you learn how to be proud of your body when you, like me, literally grow up as a model', she says. It shows on the set for our photo shoot. Photographer Warwick Saint only gives her few directions and the blond moves, laughs and looks into the camera with a sexy look. issue. In an interview with TV host Ellen Degeneres, the very happy model says the following about that: 'This has been my dream since I was fifteen. Now I have a problem: what do I have to dream of now?' She is mostly known for her body. Leonardo A big part of her star status comes from her past relationship with actor Leonardo DiCaprio. The two met each other in 2005 at an after party in Las Vegas for friends of U2 and were inseparable for three years. Obviously, the tabloids can't get enough and after the relationship ends in June 2009, they keep following Bar. No lack of controversy with this model, much to the luck of the journalists. Every step she takes or every comment she makes is being talked about into detail. At the time we're in Tel Aviv, there has just been a big stir about the huge billboards for the Israeli clothing brand Fox: it shows Bar in clothing that doesn't hide much, posing on a bed with the Israeli celebrity Noam Tor. Orthodox Jews protested against the offensive campaign. During a taxi drive through the city we see the billboards being replaced by less offensive versions. Princess But the biggest stir about 'the princess of Israel', like she carressly and not without cynism gets called, comes in 2007. Then it gets known that the model has avoided her military service by getting into a sham marriage with a friend of the family. Not just the press but whole Israel judged her for this. Citizen's duties weigh very heavy in the land of milk and honey and when you don't take that saint house seriously you're in for it. Bar adds extra fuel to the fire by saying the following in an interview with the Jewish newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth: 'Why is it any good to do for your country? Isn't it better to live in New York? [something she later denies to have said]. When the roar puts her contract with Fox in danger, the model promises to commit herself to the Israeli army for free. The task which she gets allocated: visiting schools and motivate the youth to register for the army. Besides all that, her compatriots are also proud of her. Not just because she made it this far in the model business but also because she symbolizes something positive. Israel is always mentioned in the same sentence with war and violence, but Bar Refaeli also shows that there is beauty. And a carefree youth. And future. Home Growing up in Israel, where Palestinians and Jews live on strained foot for decades, is described as carefree by Bar. 'I know this as my home. Because I only know my own experiences I can't compare it with a youth in a country where there is no war,' she says. The supermodel wants to grow old here: 'It is my youth and my future.' She loves the climate, the beach and the nature. She enthusiastically tells: 'The most beautiful things about Israel is the diversity. When you drive from North to South the landscape changes every ten minutes. There's no place on earth like this one.' But the most important reason to return to her birth country are her family and friends: 'A day at the beach with friends, having dinner with my family and watching movies at home with friends. That's what I love to do the most.' To create a home in her busy life in which she's at a different place in the world every week, she recently bought her first apartment in Tel Aviv. Not just an apartment but one at the luxurious YOO complex, designed by Philippe Starck. Luxurious is an understatement to describe her new home: a 360 degrees panorama, constant security, a spa, a sauna, a swimming pool and a private theater. To name a few things. Star status It fits her. Bar obviously is used to her lifestyle and star status. She would like to show us the most beautiful places of Tel Aviv, she says, but: 'I just can't, because of who I am.' And indeed, the streets have to be blocked for the street shots of our photo shoot. Swarms of admirers wait for hours to catch a glimpse of their princess. Both adults and children call her name. Two old men wonder if that's really Bar. Bar herself doesn't let all the attention get to her and professionally continues posing. She even seems to enjoy all the commotion around her presence, she is flattered. But when she has to wear some more daring outfits she asks for some privacy. 'To me this is just work and I have to concentrate,' she explains. At the end she rewards a few persisting children with an autograph and one lucky kid even gets to take a photo with her. Professional and seasoned. This woman grew up with media attention and knows how to protect herself for it. Like a real princess.
