  1. Why model Laura Wells had 'no choice' but to set healthy boundaries | body+soul Wellness Why model Laura Wells had 'no choice' but to set healthy boundaries ‘It genuinely makes me feel alive’ Sarah Noonan 4 min read November 2, 2023 - 12:20PM This article may contain links from our affiliate and advertising partners. Photography: Emma Maggs / @emmakatemaggs The outspoken environmentalist, model and new mum on embracing her body and why education is the best way to put online trolls in their place. You studied a marine science degree in Australia before moving to New York to become one of our most successful curve models. What first sparked your climate activism? As a model, I travelled all over the world and saw the impact we were having as humans on some of the most beautiful places on the planet first-hand. It was a real eye-opener that made me want to help create tangible change, and led to the speaking and advocacy work I do in this space. Having knowledge from my degree about how our oceans essentially keep us alive, meant doing whatever we can to protect our oceans and our planet very quickly became a stark reality. It’s something I’m incredibly passionate about, and that will be a life-long mission. You call yourself a science communicator, environmentalist and model. Now you’re a new mum, too. How do you stay balanced when you're spinning so many plates? [Having a child last November] has been a really big departure from my previous life. It’s forced me to slow down and learn which commitments to say “yes” and “no” to after I realised how little time I have in a day. Now, every moment is precious. Often I‘ll look at the clock and all of a sudden it's 7:00 PM and I haven’t achieved anything all day. I’ve had no choice but to set healthy boundaries for my mental wellbeing, which in the past I haven't been very good at. At this stage, I'm just trying to say "yes" to having a shower. 'I’ve learned to see my body for what it does, not what it looks like.' Image: Stefan Posthuma Was there anything you found particularly hard about pregnancy? The biggest thing for me was acknowledging my mental health when my body began to change. Working as a curvy model for 16 years has given me an appreciation for my body in a way where I really embrace change - I’ve learned to see my body for what it does, not what it looks like. But pregnancy wasn’t just about a new physical appearance, it was also about accepting that I had a new life role. It wasn’t just about me anymore, and that really sinks in while you're pregnant. It was funny though to notice how much I missed my belly once my son (name here) was born. It’s such a crazy thing to come to terms with, but it is also a really beautiful thing, too. How did you eventually overcome this? Working as a curvy model for 16 years has given me an appreciation for my body in a way where I really embrace change. I have learned to see my body for what it does, not what it looks like. But also, understanding that I'm creating a human and bringing something so special into the world allowed me to embrace all those changes too, and really love them for what they are. It was also funny to notice how much I missed my belly once he was born. I really enjoyed that part of my life. A lot of your work involves social media. How do you deal with the commentary and criticisms it attracts? I like to be open to opinions and open to learning, particularly as I know I can sometimes have my blinkers on. So I take criticism on and use it to grow as a person [when it’s warranted]. But I also know when not to allow it to affect me. Being embedded in social media, especially as a model and being judged on my looks, means I've built a thick skin to online trolling. I’ll call people out, usually with some form of empathy or from an informative perspective. Education is a really powerful tool for dealing with trolls. Image: Instagram/@iamlaurawells You’re an ambassador for Skin Check Champions, raising awareness about melanoma in pregnant women. What was the most surprising thing you learnt getting a skin check in your third trimester? Learning women who are pregnant are more prone to developing skin cancer was the thing that shocked me most. I got new moles, freckles and growths throughout my pregnancy; I felt like a bit of a witch with all the physical changes going on. But you can go and get your skin checked, and you can be treated to a certain extent while you’re pregnant. The earlier you catch it, especially with melanoma, the more treatable it is. The best thing I did for myself and my baby was to go and get those [new moles] checked by a specialist. Do you have a daily mindfulness practice and what does it look like? Going for an ocean swim, getting salty and submerging myself regularly is a big thing. It genuinely makes me feel alive and being in the water is instantly rejuvenating. It helps wash away stress and is kind of like meditation on its own. It’s the best way to stay grounded and happy. 2. Laura Wells in A Perfect 14 - Vogue.it Laura Wells - Photo Courtesy Press Office <> Laura Wells is ready for her turn in the spotlight. Unlike most models-turned-actresses, Wells’ debut on the big screen won’t be in a Hollywood blockbuster, but a socially conscious documentary instead. The curvy Australian model is set to star in this year’s highly anticipated A Perfect 14, a documentary on women reshaping the fashion industry and the beauty standards of society through plus-size modeling. It’s a great fit for the body positive advocate, who regularly spreads similar messages to her whopping 140,000 social media followers. This June, the film’s directors, Giovanna Morales Vargas and James Earl O’Brien, will be spending time in Australia where they’ll film Wells’ day-to-day life. Before her life and work are documented for the world to see, she reflects on her time as a public figure and plus-size model. She says, “My experience as a plus model has been a welcomed journey to self acceptance, learning about my body and loving my body. It’s very rewarding to know that my work gives others the ability to move past their insecurities and start loving their bodies. Before I modeled, I was uncomfortable with my body and didn't take much pride in it. Looking back, I was embarrassed by my body because I didn't understand it—and I was misinformed about beauty due to the images of exceptionally thin women in the media.” Now, Wells’ embarrassment is far behind her. With work for The Upside (alongside Candice Swanepoel) and Swimsuits For All, the model has no problem baring her body. With A Perfect 14, she’s also about to bare her soul. “My entry into the plus-size fashion world opened my eyes to the negativity sounding body image and I began to understand that I wasn't the only person that harboured negative thoughts about my size and shape. I had always considered myself a lot bigger than the other girls, [but] most women don't like something about their body and silently assume they are the only one with a body image issue. That’s far from the truth,” says Wells. She continues with some frustration, “I have doubted my capability and have at times doubted the fashion industry and its capability to change the stereotype of beauty it has created over the years. One of the things that disappoints me about the industry is the mentality that plus modeling promotes obesity. It’s a shame that the plus models who represent the industry are not recognized for their healthy size.” While the film will be generally uplifting, Morales Vargas and O’Brien don’t shy away from some serious and controversial topics. A Perfect 14 touches on sexual assault as it relates to body image, a model’s cancer battle, and the serious discrimination that fuller figured women face on a daily basis. The film asserts that weightism is the last acceptable version of discrimination said Daniella Sieukaran, body image researcher. Hopefully, it will inspire its viewers to push negativity against weight out of their minds. With films like A Perfect 14, Fattitude, Essence, and Miss Representation (to name a few) on the market, the industry has been making some serious strides towards female body acceptance. The tipping point is now. It’s clearly time for change. With the average American woman wearing a size 14, it’s unacceptable to be so critical of curvy bodies. Continued efforts for body positivity in all forms of media will certainly change the opinions of the next generation of girls. In turn, those girls can change their world into a truly body positive one. The message that Wells hopes resonates with girls is, “To form their own ideal of beauty and not be bound to a stereotypical mass media reproduced image. Young girls [should] understand that everything about them is beautiful and that beauty is not skin deep. Girls will be able to better relate their bodies to bodies portrayed in the documentary and understand that diversity is beauty. It would be great to show others how to deal with the body struggles they may have, to turn them into positives and become really productive people.” di Lauren Chan Published: 06/06/2014 (https://www.vogue.it/en/vogue-curvy/curvy-news/2014/06/laura-wells-in-a-perfect-14)

  4. Laura Wells | Bare For Good – Mighty Good Basics LAURA WELLS BIOLOGIST, ENVIRONMENTALIST, ACTIVIST MODEL DO YOU HAVE A LOVE STORY IN YOUR WARDROBE? I have lots of things in my wardrobe! But I think my love story in my wardrobe would be the fact that I have learnt to only buy quality pieces now. When I was younger I used to be a little bit frivolous and purchase whatever I could afford or things that I didn’t really need. Now that I’ve got older and wiser I think that I make really quality decisions and really want to understand where my clothes come from and things that I am only going to wear. So for me, its definitely a love story with how much I have learnt and what’s actually in there now. Question: What’s one tip you live by to extend the life of your clothes? Learn how to sew! Go back old school and teach yourself a new trade. I’ve mended so many different things or patches them up so many cool little funky patches because they are good and even if they have a little tear in them, I can still wear them. I like to keep a hold of the things that I really enjoy wearing and if I can fix them my selfI am a little part of my clothing and that it is nice to know that I am wearing something that I helped create. Question: What’s your rule when buying clothes for yourself? I try to understand where it has come from. I used to buy thing that I didn’t really think about or care about and know there is so much education out there to help us understand where things have come from and who has made our clothes. I think it is important to really put your heart and soul to what you purchase -really understanding where it came from, who made it and how it was made , its environmental impact. To me they are all really important things that we should be considering instead of just how cheap it is. For me, the rule that I really stand by when I purchase things is looking at its footprint, where it has come from and where it will go in the future. 9. Jenna Peij, Belgian model of the moment – Quartier Latem Jenna Peij Belgian model du moment VERSATILE, PASSIONATE AND STRONG IN THE SHOES: JENNA PEIJ TICKS OFF A SERIES OF ESSENTIAL QUALITIES AS A MODEL. BELGIAN AGENCY DOMINIQUE CONFIRMED HER TALENT AT THE AGE OF FIFTEEN AND A DECADE LATER, THE MERCHTEM NATIVE SHOWS OFF IN MANY AN EDITORIAL AND COMMERCIAL FOR INTERNATIONAL FASHION BRANDS. Jenna inherited the fashion bug from her mother and sister (Yvana Creaco and Jill Vandermeulen ed.), who both did modeling. "When I was eight, my mom signed me up at Ministar: a modeling agency for children. She had spotted early on that there was also a career as a model for me and was invariably ready with advice in my early years. From my first assignment – a shoot for Vogue Bambini – she reminded me to cherish every moment but also to keep both feet on the ground." HOW DID MODELING AFFECT YOUR TEENAGE YEARS? "As a teenager, I was very fanatical about sports and nutrition. I followed a strict lifestyle, avoided alcohol and didn't go to parties much. At a young age you are sensitive to mean comments, which contributed to the obsession with my body. As I got older, I learned to put things into perspective and let go of control. The fact that I came into contact with the modeling world at such an early stage of my life has undoubtedly shaped me into who I am today. "The fashion industry is a tough but all the more instructive business." Also in the positive sense: it made me strong and independent. The fashion sector is a tough business, where you are often on your own. When I was sixteen, I flew to Milan on my own for an assignment and I had to make my plan. It's like being thrown into a swimming pool without straps and having no choice but to learn to swim." IN THE MEANTIME, YOU HAVE ALREADY HAD A LOT OF EXPERIENCE. WHAT HIGHLIGHTS DO YOU LIKE TO LOOK BACK ON? "This year during Paris Fashion Week I will be walking for the fourth time in the Live Show of Etam, more or less the successor to the Victoria's Secret shows. I really enjoy that because it's all about female empowerment. I also had the opportunity to shoot a lookbook for Louis Vuitton and renowned Parisian jewelry houses, but you can also find me in the summer edition of Feeling. I don't necessarily aspire to collaborations with the big brands – although I certainly don't say no to a new perfume or make-up campaign. My personal style is more in line with lesser-known, sustainable labels such as the Dutch Love Stories. In addition, I have a great love for vintage and homegrown fashion. I'd rather invest in a beautiful piece by Ann Demeulemeester than in something of an international name. You have to support Belgian talent." YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WANT. HOW DO YOU HIDE SUCH A STRONG IDENTITY FROM THE CAMERA? "One of my strengths as a model is that I can easily flip a switch: I am someone completely different on and off the set. Let me pose in an ice-cold river and I don't make a sound. That professional attitude is simply ingrained. In terms of looks, I'm also a chameleon. A rewarding quality, because it allows me to score both high-end fashion editorials and commercial work for ready-to-wear brands. I like to be pulled out of my comfort zone and doing the same type of assignments over and over again would not be for me." ARE THERE MODELS THAT YOU MIRROR YOURSELF ON OR THAT ARE A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION? "My all-time woman crush is Doutzen Kroes. Not only because of her natural beauty, but also the way she combined her private life with her career is an example for me. I think it's important to show a look at my life behind the scenes on social media and to show Jenna as a person in addition to Jenna as a model. I mainly find inspiration in my circle of friends. I'm not someone who quickly looks up to a movie star or singer I don't know, but I'm someone close to me who builds something for themselves or just throws themselves hard into their job. I admire that." WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL AMBITIONS FOR THE FUTURE? "I am aware that modeling is not a lifelong activity in most cases. That's why I absolutely wanted to finish my studies. My bachelor's degree in communication management now comes in handy when creating content for Instagram and gives me a possible backup for later. Having my own business also sounds tempting, but I don't have any concrete plans yet. The fashion world is so broad, I'll see what comes my way."
