Topshop's Holly Wright and Kate Phelan share the inspiration behind the look and why the rising model is the perfect choice to represent the brand.
Taylor Hill is no stranger to taking center stage at Topshop, having closed the UK-based brand's UNIQUE fall 2016 show.
The 20-year-old Victoria's Secret model (who has also walked in shows for Marchesa, Ralph Lauren and Balmain) is a rising star in the fashion world, not to mention she boasts 3.5 million Instagram followers. With the Met Gala taking place Monday evening in New York, Topshop created the perfect ensemble for Hill and shared how the gown reflects the IMG model's personality.
The starting point of the inspiration for the Met Ball look came after Hill closed Topshop UNIQUE's February show in a dramatic black frock with leg-baring slits.
"Topshop’s in-house Atelier have created an impactful dress that moves elegantly and looks sexy," says Holly Wright, head of design at Topshop, of Hill's evening ensemble.
The romantic design features a sweeping silk black tulle (20 meters of fabric was used) with a velvet ruffled neck tie, cut-away sides and an elegant dip curving on the lower back.
Adds Wright: "The silk tulle was selected for its sheer qualities, the technical lace used for the underlay is cobweb-like in style and creates a very modern sheen — along with the dramatic train, exaggerated cut-away design and ruffled neck-tie, the dress is intended to perfectly reflect Taylor’s personality."
"What I love about Taylor is that she has this incredible level of glamour, especially within editorials and catwalks," says Topshop creative director Kate Phelan. "But through her Instagram channel you get a sense of her real self; she enjoys life, is ultimately beautiful and every girl loves her.”
