September 1, 20241 yr Author A24’s “Crystal Lake” Lands New Showrunner for ‘Friday the 13th’ Prequel TV Series Plans for A24 and Peacock’s planned Friday the 13th television series “Crystal Lake” derailed earlier this year, with showrunner Bryan Fuller‘s (“Hannibal”) departure leaving the project in limbo. Deadline reports that the project is back on track, enlisting Brad Caleb Kane (It: Welcome to Derry) as the new showrunner. Kane will serve as the series’ creator, showrunner, writer and executive producer. To refresh your memory, Peacock had given the project a straight-to-series order in 2022, with “Crystal Lake” being described as an “expanded prequel” to the original Friday the 13th franchise featuring both Jason Voorhees and his mother, Pamela. Additionally, Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Splice) and Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry, Carrie) were set to direct episodes, with the budget ballooning to around $10 million per episode. With eight episodes in total planned for the first season, it would’ve cost A24 roughly $85 million to bring the series to life, with additional seasons being planned by the studio. Expect the direction to change completely now that a new showrunner is in place. Kane has most recently served as co-showrunner and executive producer of It: Welcome to Derry, an anticipated It prequel series starring Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise. In addition to Kane, exec producers on the series include A24; Victor Miller, who wrote the screenplay for the franchise’s original 1980 film; Miller’s copyright attorney, Marc Toberoff; Robert M. Barsamian and Robert P. Barsamian. The project will mark A24’s first major IP-driven project amid a recent effort to expand in a more commercial direction. “From the moment I watched Jason Voorhees squeeze a guy’s eyeball out of its socket (in glorious 3D!) at the tender age of 8 years old, I knew my creative path was someday destined to converge with The Man Behind The Mask,” said Kane in a statement. “Nothing defined my childhood more than growing up in the golden age of the slasher flick, and nothing’s defined the genre more than Friday The 13th. I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity to contribute a chapter to this iconic franchise, particularly with such fearless partners as Peacock and A24.” Now that “Crystal Lake” is back on track, expect to hear a lot more about this Friday the 13th prequel series in the coming months.

We are excited to team up with amazing filmmakers from around the world, and kicking things off with Mattie, Aaron, and Justin in launching the series.”Do says of The Sleeping Beauty, “One of the most incredible moments I have is sharing The Sleeping Beauty with audiences and seeing how horror and fairytales cross all boundaries and cultures, regardless of where we are from. I’m so excited to share my dark and exotic twist on a familiar fairytale.” Mattie continues “I’m delighted to be back at Fantastic Fest with The Sleeping Beauty, the first film festival I had ever attended and the fest that made me realize that I was and continue to be a storyteller. Fantastic Fest feels like coming home.”Benson and Moorhead, who also star in their episode, said of Jacques the Giant Slayer, “We’ve had the profound luck of making quite a few films in the last decade, but as time has gone on we don’t always get to run wild with the weird spirit of our indie film work. For us Jacques the Giant Slayer is a return to running wild – vintage Rustic Films, all of us guzzling distilled weirdness from start to finish. The fact that we get to premiere it at Fantastic Fest is not only fitting, but just as much of an honor as it was when we premiered SPRING in those hallowed, movie-postered halls in 2014. We hope everyone enjoys it, but if they don’t we know it’ll still be cool – we’re back home with everyone in Austin, and that’s always special.”Check out key art for the first two episodes and read on for episode details. The Sleeping BeautyThe wife of a colonial governor confronts devastation after her aristocratic son removes a slumbering woman from an ancient temple in the jungles of Laos – only to bring home a curse that refuses to die.● Directed by: Mattie Do (Dearest Sister, The Long Walk) ● Written by: Christopher Sean Larsen● Cast: Sonedala Sihavong, Phonesavanh “Tata” Phimpha, Gabriel Soutphilabaideng, Sivilay OuanephongchareuneJacques the Giant SlayerIn this dark interpretation of Jack and the Beanstalk, an early 20th century archeologist makes a profound discovery.● Directed by: Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (“Daredevil,” “Loki,” Spring, The Endless)● Cast: Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead

3 hours ago3 hr Author Bryan Fuller makes his feature directorial debut with the Mads Mikkelsen-starring Dust Bunny this December, which reunites Fuller and Mikkelsen ten years after their NBC series “Hannibal” came to an end. Fuller has never given up hope on “Hannibal” returning to television, and he tells Screen Rant that he’s now got a particular dream scenario in mind.“My dream project is to do a limited series of Silence of the Lambs with Mads and Zendaya as Clarice Starling,” the creator of NBC’s short-lived “Hannibal” television series tells the outlet. “If I could put anything out into the universe, I would put that into the universe.”Fuller has made no secret of the fact that he wants to put his own spin on Silence of the Lambs within the “Hannibal” universe, but that’s a bit more complex than you might be thinking. The reason NBC’s “Hannibal” never delved into the events of The Silence of the Lambs is because the rights to that particular story (and its characters) are held by MGM, and MGM recently brought the character back with their own series “Clarice,” which aired on CBS. The series, which came to an end after just one season, was a sequel to The Silence of the Lambs. The De Laurentiis Company owns the rights to the character of Hannibal but not the Silence of the Lambs story/characters, which is the big hurdle Bryan Fuller would have to overcome.Bryan Fuller has been keeping the hope alive for the return of “Hannibal” ever since NBC pulled the plug back in 2015, but at this moment in time, there seems to be no actual movement in regards to any sort of revival. “Hannibal” ran for three seasons on NBC between 2013 and 2015, and the show’s massively dedicated fanbase has been hungry for its return ever since. It’s only a matter of time before Hannibal Lecter returns to the screen. Here’s hoping it’s Mads Mikkelsen who once again finds himself in the role. Stay tuned for more as we learn it.
