A24’s “Crystal Lake” Lands New Showrunner for ‘Friday the 13th’ Prequel TV Series

image.png

Plans for A24 and Peacock’s planned Friday the 13th television series “Crystal Lake” derailed earlier this year, with showrunner Bryan Fuller‘s (“Hannibal”) departure leaving the project in limbo. Deadline reports that the project is back on track, enlisting Brad Caleb Kane (It: Welcome to Derry) as the new showrunner.

Kane will serve as the series’ creator, showrunner, writer and executive producer.

To refresh your memory, Peacock had given the project a straight-to-series order in 2022, with “Crystal Lake” being described as an “expanded prequel” to the original Friday the 13th franchise featuring both Jason Voorhees and his mother, Pamela. Additionally, Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Splice) and Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry, Carrie) were set to direct episodes, with the budget ballooning to around $10 million per episode. With eight episodes in total planned for the first season, it would’ve cost A24 roughly $85 million to bring the series to life, with additional seasons being planned by the studio.

Expect the direction to change completely now that a new showrunner is in place.
Kane has most recently served as co-showrunner and executive producer of It: Welcome to Derry, an anticipated It prequel series starring Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise. In addition to Kane, exec producers on the series include A24; Victor Miller, who wrote the screenplay for the franchise’s original 1980 film; Miller’s copyright attorney, Marc Toberoff; Robert M. Barsamian and Robert P. Barsamian. The project will mark A24’s first major IP-driven project amid a recent effort to expand in a more commercial direction.
“From the moment I watched Jason Voorhees squeeze a guy’s eyeball out of its socket (in glorious 3D!) at the tender age of 8 years old, I knew my creative path was someday destined to converge with The Man Behind The Mask,” said Kane in a statement. “Nothing defined my childhood more than growing up in the golden age of the slasher flick, and nothing’s defined the genre more than Friday The 13th. I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity to contribute a chapter to this iconic franchise, particularly with such fearless partners as Peacock and A24.”
Now that “Crystal Lake” is back on track, expect to hear a lot more about this Friday the 13th prequel series in the coming months.

The original horror classic, Poltergeist was released in 1982, directed by Tobe Hooper and co-written and produced by Steven Spielberg. JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson and the late Heather O’Rourke starred as a family besieged by supernatural terror in their suburban home.

The original hit was followed by Poltergeist II: The Other Side in 1986 and Poltergeist III in 1988, plus a largely forgotten remake in 2015. Then there was the TV series “Poltergeist: The Legacy,” which ran from 1996 to 1999. “It’s like a hole opened up in the world… to the center of nothingness.” From Executive Producer Ryan Murphy (“American Horror Story”) comes the brand new FX horror series “Grotesquerie,” and FX has released the first official teaser trailer this morning.

“Grotesquerie” will premiere September 25 on FX, arriving next day on Hulu.

Watch the teaser trailer for Ryan Murphy’s “Grotesquerie” below.

Niecy Nash-Betts (“Dahmer”) stars in the upcoming horror series alongside Courtney B. Vance (“Lovecraft Country”) and Oscar nominee Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread). Micaela Diamond, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Raven Goodwin, and Travis Kelce also star.

In Ryan Murphy’s 10-episode drama series for FX, a series of heinous crimes have unsettled a small community. “Detective Lois Tryon” feels these crimes are eerily personal, as if someone—or something—is taunting her. At home, Lois grapples with a strained relationship with her daughter, a husband in long-term hospital care and her own inner demons.

With no leads and unsure of where to turn, she accepts the help of “Sister Megan,” a nun and journalist with the Catholic Guardian. Sister Megan, with her own difficult past, has seen the worst of humanity, yet she still believes in its capacity for good. Lois, on the other hand, fears the world is succumbing to evil. As Lois and Sister Megan string together clues, they find themselves ensnared in a sinister web that only seems to raise more questions than answers.

Written and created by Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken, “Grotesquerie” is directed by Max Winkler, Murphy, Alexis Martin Woodall and Elegance Bratton. The show is executive produced by Murphy, Woodall, Baitz, Baken, Winkler, Nash-Betts, Vance, Peter Liguori, Nissa Diederich, Eric Kovtun and Scott Robertson. It is produced by 20th Television.

Welcome to Derry’ Trailer Heads to 1962 and Brings Bill Skarsgard’s Pennywise Back to Life

The upcoming series “Welcome to Derry” is taking us back to where it all began this coming Fall, with HBO unleashing the official teaser trailer for the IT prequel series this morning.

The nine episode HBO series will serve as a prequel to Stephen King’s horror classic, and yes, Bill Skarsgård will be making his return as the iconic villain Pennywise the Clown.

“Welcome to Derry” is being positioned as a true continuation of Andy Muschietti’s IT movies, telling a brand new story that’s been pulled from the pages of King’s classic novel.

Andy Muschietti will direct multiple episodes of the original series.

“Welcome to Derry” kicks off its story in 1962 in the time leading up to the events of It: Chapter One (2017). The series is based on Mike Hanlon’s interludes from King’s book, which document “catastrophic events” from Derry, Maine’s past. Muschietti has teased that second and third seasons, if ordered by HBO, would take place in 1935 and 1908, respectively.

Taylour Paige (Zola), Jovan Adepo (“Watchmen”), Chris Chalk (“Perry Mason”), James Remar (Oppenheimer), Madeleine Stowe (Revenge) and Stephen Rider (Daredevil) will star in the upcoming series, with Bill Skarsgård returning as Pennywise the Clown.

Alixandra Fuchs (Hatfields & McCoys), Kimberly Guerrero (The English), Dorian Grey (Star Trek: Discovery), Thomas Mitchell (Gangland Undercover), BJ Harrison (Family Law), Peter Outerbridge (Saw VI), Shane Marriott (Fargo), Chad Rook (Billy the Kid), Joshua Odjick (Little Bird), Rudy Mancuso (The Flash) and Morningstar Angeline (Echo) also star.

Produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television, developed for television by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs, “Welcome to Derry” is based on the novel IT by Stephen King. Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti (through their Double Dream production company), Jason Fuchs, Brad Caleb Kane, David Coatsworth, Bill Skarsgård, Shelley Meals, Roy Lee, and Dan Lin are executive producers. Jason Fuchs, who wrote the teleplay for the first episode, and Brad Caleb Kane serve as co-showrunners on the project.

Frequent Murphy collaborator Max Winkler (“American Horror Story,” “Grotesquerie”) is attached to direct with Kaia Gerber (“American Horror Story,” Bottoms) set to star.

Set in 1981 Los Angeles, the semi-autobiographical, dark coming-of-age tale follows a 17-year-old Ellis during his final year at the elite Buckley prep school. Upending the character’s world is the arrival of a mysterious new student, Robert Mallory, whose unsettling presence coincides with the activities of a serial killer known as The Trawler.

The series is produced by 20th Television in association with Ryan Murphy Television. Murphy, Ellis, and Winkler will executive produce alongside Nick Hall, Kathleen McCaffrey, and Brian Young.

Eaton was attached to write to an earlier version of “The Shards” that failed to move forward at HBO, but there’s no word on who’s penning the FX incarnation.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Reboot Finds New Slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong

Into every generation, a Slayer is born. In this generation, the new Slayer for Hulu’s “Buffy The Vampire Slayer“ is Firestarter and “Skeleton Crew“ star Ryan Kiera Armstrong.

The announcement came from the original series’ Slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar, who broke the news to Armstrong in a touching video and will reprise her iconic role as Buffy Summers.

Watch the video below, which sees her asking Armstrong to fight by her side to save the world in the upcoming pilot for Hulu, with Armstrong breaking down in tears from excitement.

It was previously reported that the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer“ reboot will focus on a new Slayer that was described as “a cerebral 16-year-old named Nova (likely a placeholder). Skewing more Willow than Buffy, the character is described as very smart and a bit of a loner.“

The new slayer’s friends will include Hugo, an out-and-proud nerd who comes from money, and Gracie, a young vampire expert who’s an acolyte of Buffy. However, casting has yet to be announced for either role. With this new key casting in place, expect that to change soon.

“From the moment I saw Ryan’s audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side,“ Gellar said in a statement. “To have that kind of emotional intelligence, and talent, at such a young age is truly gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room.”

Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (“Poker Face”) wrote the pilot, and Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) is set to direct and executive produce. Gellar is also set to executive produce. Additional executive producers include original “Buffy” EPs Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton.

Created by Joss Whedon, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer“ ran for seven seasons between 1997 and 2003.

Matthew Lillard in Talks to Join Mike Flanagan’s ‘Carrie’ TV Series

image.png

Matthew Lillard is back in the horror genre in a big way, first starring in the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie and now returning to the Scream franchise next year. Lillard is also re-entering the world of Stephen King, with Deadline reporting today that he’s in talks to star in the upcoming Amazon series adaptation of King’s Carrie from creator Mike Flanagan!

Matthew Lillard will next be seen in NEON’s The Life of Chuck, also directed by Mike Flanagan and also based on a Stephen King story. That movie, however, is not a horror movie.

Prime Video recently confirmed a series green light for “Carrie,” an eight-episode adaptation of Stephen King‘s classic 1974 horror novel produced by Amazon MGM Studios.

Mike Flanagan serves as writer and showrunner in addition to directing select episodes.

Summer H. Howell (Curse of Chucky) has landed the leading role of Carrie White for the Flanagan series, while Siena Agudong (“Resident Evil”) has been cast as Sue Snell.

In Stephen King’s Carrie, “Misfit high schooler Carrie White has spent her life in seclusion with her domineering mother. After her father’s sudden and untimely death, Carrie finds herself contending with the alien landscape of public High School, a bullying scandal that shatters her community, and the emergence of mysterious telekinetic powers.”

Described as “a bold and timely reimagining” of the story, the upcoming Prime Video show is executive produced by Flanagan and longtime producing partner Trevor Macy.

Carrie was previously adapted by Brian De Palma in 1976, David Carson in 2002, and Kimberly Peirce in 2013. Katt Shea also directed a Carrie sequel movie back in 1999.
