Helena Christensen Updates Her Résumé (Again)

The term supermodel is used very loosely these days, but there are only a handful of women who are true card-carrying members of the club. Helena Christensen is one of them. The Danish and Peruvian beauty known for her mesmerizing eyes went from repping Denmark in the 1986 Miss Universe pageant to strutting down the Paris catwalks to total fashion domination. Her exotic looks and voluptuous body captivated the fashion world and secured her spot as one of the industry’s most sought-after girls.

It’s been 20 years since the Supermodel Era was at its peak, but Christensen, who turned 46 on Christmas, has continued to work steadily. In fact, this past December, she earned the honor of being the first woman to appear solo on the cover of Men’s Health U.K. Although high-profile gigs still come her way, Christensen is a lot more low-key than some of her counterparts. She’s never been caught up in a scandal and you won’t find her hosting a reality show or shilling on QVC. Instead, Christensen has explored behind-the-scenes creative pursuits like publishing and photography, all while raising her 15-year-old son, Mingus (whom she co-parents with actor Norman Reedus). Now the supe is dabbling in yet another exciting venture: She’s creative director for ERH1012, an artisanal fragrance house founded by entrepreneur Elizabeth Gaynes. The brand just launched its first scent, Dead of Night Perfume Oil, a sexy blend of jasmine, amber, and a rare resin called oudh. Christensen chatted with us about getting a crash course in perfumery, her plans for 2015, and how the hell she still looks so good.

How did you and Elizabeth Gaynes meet?

Our sons went to school together and we became close that way. About four years ago, Elizabeth was in the early stages of processing a pure form of oudh oil into a perfume oil, and she introduced me to the scent. Once I smelled it, I immediately knew I wanted to be part of the project because of the intoxicating and hypnotic effect it had on me. I had never smelled anything like it before.

What do you enjoy the most about your role as creative director of ERH1012?

I am fascinated by scents and always have been. I feel very committed to my role and enjoy being part of a group of people making a big effort together. ERH1012 is such a small, personal company, which is something I really appreciate. I only commit to projects that truly speak to my heart. The most interesting part of creating Dead of Night was developing the actual scent, step-by-step. It’s a great learning experience and very humbling to be working with our highly skilled perfumer, Christophe Laudamiel.

You obviously have fantastic genes, but what do you do to keep your complexion looking so gorgeous?

My routine is pretty low-key and natural. On a daily basis, I just use a toner, serum, and moisturizer, products like Nude ProGenius Omega Treatment Milkand [the range developed by] Christine Chin. And I try to get enough sleep and drink a lot of water—the usual cliché, but it works!

How about exercise—do you enjoy working out or is it just part of the job?

I have come to appreciate a good workout because of the huge benefits. It’s great to feel strong and fit, and I enjoy the sensation of [strengthening] new muscle groups. A big bonus is that it also enables me to eat as much as I’d like!

You’re known as one of the original supermodels, but at the time, were you aware that something special and historical was happening?

We worked very hard. It’s only later that I realized it really was a very special time. Everything was so hectic and intense, and I’m only just now trying to catch up with all the moments. I definitely feel very grateful, and I’m still surprised [that I was] part of that special group of girls.

How does your experience in front of the camera help you as a photographer when you’re shooting a model or celebrity?

I had the great fortune of working with some of the most legendary photographers as a model, and I tried to absorb as much knowledge as I possibly could. It was a bit like getting a photography education at the same time.

Why were you drawn to photography?

There’s just something so poetic and mysterious about capturing a moment, a sensation, on camera and turning it into a print. It’s a beautiful thought that we can look at profound moments on a piece of paper forever.

The “Wicked Game” video you starred in with Chris Isaak in 1989 became iconic. Have you ever thought of branching out from photography and shooting videos or films?

Not really, but I get very inspired by movies. I often take photos of the screen when I watch a movie that has great cinematography—the latest one being Ida, an extraordinarily filmed Polish movie with a really poignant story.

What does it feel like to have people constantly telling you that you’re beautiful?

People don’t tell me that constantly, ha! When it happens, it’s just really lovely to hear, and I take that as a huge compliment.

You’ve done so much in your career—modeling, photography, designing lingerie, cofounding a magazine [Nylon], and now working with ERH1012. Is there anything else you want to do in 2015 or beyond?

I would like to keep working on my little personal projects. I’m working on a clothing line with a friend of mine that I’m very proud of. I will keep working on my series of female portraits. And I will hopefully be exploring the world at the same time.

Excerpt from the book:Models of Influence: 50 Women Who Reset the Course of Fashion by Nigel Barker

"Whether it was growing up in Copenhagen or simply an innate comfort in her own skin, it's hard to say, but Helena's ease with her body makes her potentially scandalous work, evident not just in the Ritts video but in the countless editorials and advertisements in which she's appeared, feel like a pure and simple celebration of human beauty."
