Benítez To Bring Raúl To Anfield?

According to reports published in the Spanish press today, Raúl could be on the way to Anfield for the next three seasons as Capello’s refurbishment of the White House continues to rejuvenate the Merengue squad.

Raúl is under contract at Real Madrid until June 2010, but the recent exits of Beckham and the teetering Fenômeno has changed the order of things in Madrid and more fundamental changes are possible in a way that would previously have been unthinkable.

Capello wants to have seven players under 25 in his first eleven and the rumbling at the Bernabéu has lit up a Rafael Benítez who’d love to count on Raúl for the next three years – strangely enough the same amount of time left to run on Raúl’s Real contract.

Raúl’s agent, Ginés Carvajal, has made it clear that if Madrid don’t count on the ageing captain then "I can place him in England without the slightest problem". Benítez and Raúl goes way back and may grease the workings of any potential deal.

Benítez was coaching Castilla (a.k.a. Real Madrid ‘B’) when Jorge Valdano made a 17 year-old Raúl debut for the A team in 1994. The number 7 already knows the city as he visited close friend Fernando Morientes when the ‘Moro’ was playing for the Reds.

Raúl knows that the contract that Florentino Pérez laid out for him until 2010 may be worth as much as the paper it’s written on and, although reluctant, would accept a dignified exit. "I want to stay at the club but if I have to make a personal sacrifice for the good of the club, then so be it."

After the Getafe mini-disaster, Calderón revealed that the veteran is suffering as Madrid go through the changes. "Raúl told me that he was suffering a lot, that he could hardly sleep straight and if things carried on this way then he’d like to be released from such a long contract."

It still seems unlikely that such a club emblem will leave but such things have happened before in times of transition as one of Raúl’s contemporaries in La Fúria, Josep Guardiola, showed in his departure from FC Barcelona as the Catalan club went through a transition. Has Raúl’s time come?

Spanish Newspaper Speculates Raul’s Move To Liverpool – Raul’s Contract At Real Madrid Until 2010

Spain and Real Madrid striker Raul Gonzalez has been linked with a summer move to Liverpool.

Spanish sports daily As on Saturday cited Reds manager Rafa Benitez’s association with the 29-year-old Raul, who has played in three FIFA World Cups, during his coaching days with Real’s youth.

The player’s agent Gines Carvajal said on Spanish radio earlier in the week, Raul, who has been playing for Real at senior level since 1994, would have no problems playing in England.

But it depends on the club whether they allow the other sides to bid for Raul, who has a contract with Real until 2010.

The speculative report also put the fee to be around £12 million. Apart from matching Spain’s all-time leading goal-scorer with 44 goals, Raul’s current wages are believed to be £4 million a year.

Raul has been spotted at Anfield in the past two seasons, visiting his friend Fernando Morientes, who is now back in Spain.

Reds in new Raul link

Liverpool are being linked with a fresh move for Real Madrid star Raul at the end of the season.

The Reds have been credited with an interest in Raul for some time with Rafa Benitez a close personal friend of the Spanish international.

Reports emanating from Spain this weekend suggest Liverpool could make a move for the Real Madrid icon in the summer.

Speculation intensified over a possible move to Liverpool last summer after Raul was spotted at Anfield watching some games.

Raul's future at El Santiago Bernabeu is up in the air as he has struggled to hold down a regular place in Fabio Capello's starting XI.

The forward has previously claimed he would quit Real if the club made it clear he was surplus to requirements and after the defeat to Getafe in October Real president Ramon Calderon revealed Raul considered quitting the club.

The news alerted Benitez to Raul's possible availability and the Liverpool boss has been eagerly monitoring his situation in the Spanish capital.

Raul's agent Gines Carvajal has admitted if the striker was to leave Real, England would be his preferred destination.

"If he leaves Real in the summer it will be easy the destination in England," Carvajal told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser.

Liverpool are thought to be ready to offer Raul a three-year deal in a bid to lure him to Anfield.
