Raul will return, Aragones says

MADRID (AP): Spain coach Luis Aragones expects Raul Gonzalez to reclaim his place in the national team.

Aragones dropped Raul, Spain's all-time leading scorer with 44 goals from 102 games, in September for the first time in 10 years. The Real Madrid captain has missed three games so far - the 2008 European Championship qualifier against Sweden and friendlies with Argentina and Romania.

"Raul is our great captain and I believe he'll be back because he'll do enough to get there again,"Aragones told the Web site of sports daily Marca. "He's played nearly every match. It depends on Raul, not the national coach, who only goes round the stadiums with his staff and sees who's in good form."

Raúl one match away from catching up with Gento in games played with Real Madrid

If he plays on Sunday against Deportivo, Raúl will break yet another record in his professional career by catching up with legendary player Gento in number of games played with Real Madrid. It would be the captain's 428th match. What makes the feat more significant is the fact that Gento got to that number in 18 seasons, while Raúl has only needed 13.

Sunday's match could make Raúl become one of the four players to have played the most games with Real Madrid in the Club's history. 428 matches will bring Raúl closer to former captain Sanchís, who played a total of 524 games with the Whites.

In order to break Sanchís' record, Raúl would first have to surpass Hierro's 439 and Santillana's 461 matches. The most complicated record to break is former Spanish keeper Andoni Zubizarreta's 622 League matches, but one never knows; Raúl has grown accustomed to breaking records and he might manage to break all four.

Hierro wasn't wrong to compare Raúl with a Ferrari some years ago, saying that he was a player capable of surpassing everyone else. Raúl, currently 29 years old, is two nettings away from emulating Santillana's goal scoring record, that as of today makes the legendary player Real Madrid's second top-scorer. Raúl will surely break this record in 2007, getting closer to Di Stéfano's impressive 216 goal feat.

As of today, Raúl is the active player to have played the most League matches and to have scored the most goals in the First Division. The Whites' captain has also scored 44 goals with the Spanish national team, making him their top-scorer. He is also the second player to have played the most games with Spain, taking part in 102 encounters -24 less than Andoni Zubizarreta.

Raúl holds the record of playing the most European competition matches, having taken part in 105 Champions League clashes. The captain has won three Champions League trophies, standing with Cañizares, Morientes and Maldini as the active football player to have won the most European titles.
