Cannavaro Reveals Napoli Contact

Fabio Cannavaro has revealed that he has informed Napoli of his desire to return to the club and could be set to leave Real Madrid this summer.

The Italian central defender met with the Serie B's chief, Pierpaolo Marino, in Rimini recently and made it clear he is keen to end his career with the Azzurri.

After a troubled campaign at the Bernabéu, the 33-year-old defender could be set to leave Madrid with coach Fabio Capello at the end of the season and has already started laying the groundwork for his next destination.

"I have talked to Marino, Napoli's chief operating officer, and he knows how I feel now," Cannavaro stated.

It is not the first time that the former Parma and Juventus star has claimed that he would like to represent his hometown club again, but this was the clearest statement of intent yet.

Marino has reportedly not met with the Napoli board to brief them in full on his coversation with the World Cup winner.

Cannavaro rose through the ranks at Napoli and played for the club for three seasons until in 1995 he joined Parma during the club's golden period.

After seven seasons with the Gialloblu, Inter snapped him up and he was on the move once again in 2004 when Juventus came calling.

When La Vecchia Signora were relegated at the end of last season, Cannavaro was tempted by trying his hand in la Primera and joined Capello in Madrid.

Schuster demands Cannavaro stay with Real Madrid

tribalfooball.com - April 04, 2007

Bernd Schuster has demanded that Real Madrid shelve any plans of selling defender Fabio Cannavaro at the end of this season.

The Getafe coach is expected to take over the reigns at Madrid in the summer and has told the club's technical staff that he wants to build his team around the 33 year-old Italy captain.

Cannavaro has struggled in his first season in Spain, but Schuster is convinced he will be better for the campaign and has demanded from Real directors that they resist all offers for the centre-half.

Schuster In Cannavaro Demand - Report

Bernd Schuster has demanded that Real Madrid don’t sell defender Fabio Cannavaro, if reports in Spain are to be believed.

The Getafe coach is the hot favourite to replace the under-pressure Fabio Capello at the Bernabeu this summer and it seems he is already calling the shots.

He has reportedly told the club’s technical staff that he wants to build his team around the Italy captain.

This news comes despite the fact that Cannavaro has clearly underperformed in certain games since joining from Juventus last summer.

The German is convinced, however, that the 33-year-old can rediscover his best form and has urged the club to hold on to the World Cup winner.

Fabio Cannavaro on Onda Madrid

"We are going to pour our hearts out to win the League"

Real Madrid defender Fabio Cannavaro told Onda Madrid that Real Madrid are capable of winning the League, especially after the last couple of victories that have boosted the morale of all Madridismo.

The Italian defender is confident of winning the League, but said it is crucial to earn every point at stake at the Bernabéu. "It's crazy to drop so many points at home," said Cannavaro, "It's strange because teams normally play better at home, but we are finding it hard to do so. That's why we've reached out to the fans for their support. We need their help. We're playing badly, but we are strong contenders for the title... Just imagine what we could do if we played well. We are going to play with our hearts. The fans like us to fight to the end and we are going to do just that."

The performances the Italian has given since his arrival at Real Madrid have been cause for debate. Fabio Cannavaro blames his weak performances on the great number of games he's had to play in the past year in the League, the King's Cup, the Champions League and the World Cup. "This year has been different. After the World Cup I had already played 70 games, and that's a lot. I don't like to hide, that's not how I am. I know when I play well and when I don't. I can only keep working with excitement. Playing poorly three games in a row gets to you. I've played many games and I recently won a World Cup, so I'm not 100% focused. I feel great at Real Madrid and I just need to play a bit better. My main problem is that everyone keeps comparing how I play now with how I played in the World Cup. I think I've played well in some games, but the press don't agree."

Real Madrid are in high spirits thanks to their last couple of victories and they intend to win every point at stake in what's left of the season. "A team must create ball movement when it's in control of the ball and pursue it when it isn't. We haven't been regular at that. In some games, like those against Barcelona, we all attacked and we all defended. I am sure we will eventually find that regularity because we all want to win the League."

"Playing at Real Madrid is amazing. I love the city, the stadium... I'm very happy here and I don't want to leave. I want to return to playing well and work even harder," said the centre back concerning recent rumours about his signing for Napoli next season.

Cannavaro knows the Real Madrid squad is full of excellent players, but he thinks Raúl's efforts are worthy of note. "I like Raúl very much because he can play in any position: as a striker, down the left, down the right... He is a true professional. He only thinks about improving. I like how he thinks and I like his spirit, irregardless of him scoring or not."

Cannavaro on Real woe

Real Madrid defender Fabio Cannavaro has spoken of his problems this season and has admitted that his head is not 100% right.

The Italy captain and FIFA World Player of the Year also urged Real's fans to get behind their team after a shocking home record this season.

The World Cup winner - who has hardly set La Liga alight since joining from Juventus in the summer - also praised second-placed Sevilla for their commitment to attacking football.

"Sevilla are the best team that play in Spain at the moment although we still have a chance to win the title," Cannavaro told radio station Onda Madrid.

"This season's Liga campaign has been a shocker for Real Madrid because of all the bad results at home - it's so unusual but at least we are playing better on our travels now.

"I want to ask all the fans for the maximum support in our forthcoming matches."

Cannavaro has come in for much criticism after failing to shore up a leaky Real defence this season after arriving with the pedigree of being the world's best. But he thinks the criticism is harsh on account of the number of games he has played, leaving him jaded:

"This season has been different for me," he continued. "Due to the World Cup I have played more than 70 matches and that is far too much. I need to have total concentration but also without fatigue. Now my head is not 100%."

He is not thinking of leaving Real for a return to Italy though, adding: "I am happy at Real Madrid and would like to finish my contract here. The city is great."
