X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

I am super excited about this. Days of Future Past was so amazing and was definitely what the franchise needed to give it life again. Bryan Singer is back in the sequel to First Class and Days of Future Past. The setting is the 1980s and the X-Men will have to deal with the toughest villain Apocalypse.

 

James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholaus Holt, Evan Peters and Hugh Jackman are set to return. And today Variety and Bryan Singer confirmed that Oscar Isaac will be playing the villain Apocalypse. No other cast is announced so far but young Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm will be in this.

Also not sure if Gambit will feature or not. But if he does Channing Tatum will be playing him.

Very early days I know, but this is all sounding rather exciting so far.

 

After the previous rumours of Tom Hardy being on board, I will admit to being slightly underwhelmed by the casting of Oscar Isaac. I've seen some of his serious dramatic work and consider him an excellent talent, but I'm undecided as to whether this is a role where he'll be able to do himself justice.

 

I wonder if Apocalypse being unleashed will be a result of his timeline getting altered by the events of 'Days of Future Past'? That would be kind of cool. Giant letter 'A' on his belt though, or we riot!

I'm underwhelmed too but I think that's mostly because I've never seen Oscar in any movie before so I don't know how to judge him. And I guess I just pictured someone else for the role, though I don't know who.

Oscar was outstanding in 'Drive' and 'Inside Llewyn Davis', but he usually comes across as a very understated performer. So much so that the thought of him portraying a larger-than-life villain in full-blown insanity mode is a little tricky for me to wrap my head around. Still, time will tell.

That would explain why I've never seen him in anything, never bothered with Drive. Something about Ryan Gosling's face just makes me want to punch him, can't watch him in anything. 

But I guess with everything they are actors so I'm sure he'll be able to do a good job. Look at Heath Ledger as The Joker, never would have thought the guy from Ten Things I Hate About You would have been able to play such an amazing and iconic villain.

Apocalypse is definitely the best baddest villain the X-Men ever came across. The Age of Apocalypse storyline in the comics is one of the best and I know Bryan and Simon both said they are pulling a lot from that comic. I hope they also try and include some characters again like Iceman, Kitty and this time not cut out Rogue. They still have to release the extended edition of DoFP with her part edited back in. It's coming out next year.

I have faith in Bryan when it comes to the X-Men movies. Of all the X-Men movies my least favourites were X3: The Last Stand and the Wolverine Origins movie; Bryan wasn't involved in either. So I agree with you, he knows his stuff.

While 'Origins' was indeed rubbish, I will admit to having a small soft spot for 'Last Stand'. The movie had many a shortcoming (the muddled narrative, the lack of depth compared to the other X-Men outings and the mishandling of Mystique, for starters), but Famke Janssen's turn in it will always have a place in my heart. She worked miracles with limited material and gave a genuinely stirring and unpredictable performance. The scene in which Jean tears her childhood home from its foundations is still one of the coolest things I've ever seen on the big screen.

 

Since the current plan is to launch younger versions of Scott, Jean and Storm, there probably won't be a place for Famke in this one. I'm a bit sad about that.

Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen won't return for X-Men: Apocalypse

Despite the cast of last year's X-Men: Days Of Future Past powering that film toward a mammoth box office haul of $748m (making it the eighth highest-grossing movie of 2014), it looks like sequel X-Men: Apocalypse is going to feature something of a shake-up.

 

While chatting with Larry King (in an interview that will air this Wednesday), Patrick Stewart confirmed that he and Ian McKellen won't be returning as Professor X and Magneto for the sixth X-Men movie. “I was learning quite a lot more about it last night,” Stewart said of the movie, “and it is going to be looking very much at the earlier lives of all our characters. And so I don’t think we’ll be making an appearance.”

Which is a shame, considering it had already been seven years since we last saw Stewart and McKellen playing those roles (in X-Men: The Last Stand) when they pitched up in X-Men: DOFP. With X-Men: Apocalypse set to close out the trilogy of prequel films that started with X-Men: First Class, though, could it be that 20th Century Fox have other plans for the 'older' incarnations of its comic-book heroes? Here's hoping we get to see them dealing with the fall-out of X-Men: DOFP's time re-flow at some point in the not-too-distant future.

 

I suppose it's no real surprise that Sirs Patrick and Ian aren't going to be in 'Apocalypse' (it wouldn't make a lot of sense unless they were to do more time travel stuff), but I'll miss them all the same.

Yeah super bummed that they won't be involved but I am ok with that. I love the characters of Magneto and Prof X but they've featured in all X-Men films minus the solo Wolverine's and even Prof X showed up as a cameo in one. So I kind of want to see an X-Men movie without them. But doesn't matter anyway as we have the younger versions still. So far still no news on who has been casted for Cyclops, Jean and Storm but hopefully we find out soon.

And also they're working on the extended DoFP edit with Rogue. Can't wait for that release.

After I said that Bryan Singer officially announced Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey and Alexandra Shipp as Storm. I love this casting. Especially Sophie as Jean.

The only one of the new additions I'm familiar with is Sophie Turner, who I've no worries about. Give her Jean's iconic red hair and she'll be a perfect fit for the physical design of the character.
 
People on comic book sites seem to be twisting a bit about the other two, but many did the same thing when Jackman was cast as Wolverine back in the day. I'll reserve judgment until I actually see them play the characters in the film.

Yeah I try not and get too worried about casting. Like you said when Hugh was cast people went crazy, when Chris Evans was cast people went crazy and look how loved and popular they are now.

One thing I love about Bryan's casting is getting actors who are wonderful and so talented. Tye for example has been in some very serious young roles already and he has a huge career ahead of him. I'm sure they impressed Bryan very much. So I'm excited and can't wait for any more casting news. The movie should start filming soon. I think by March/April.

Rose Byrne To Return In X-Men: Apocalypse

 

Producer-screenwriter Simon Kinberg says actress Rose Byrne will reprise her X-Men: First Class role as Moira MacTaggert in the forthcoming X-Men: Apocalypse. Byrne's CIA agent character sat out X-Men: Days of Future Past, meaning it will be roughly twenty years since Moira last encountered the X-Men when she appears in the 1980s-set Apocalypse.

“She’s a significant character in the movie,” Kinberg told Entertainment Weekly. “We ended First Class with Charles [Xavier] having wiped portions of her memory of her experience with the X-Men. They are, essentially, strangers to her when she meets them.”

Kinberg added that he'd like to "mine" more of the "rich relationship" between Professor X and Moira in the next movie, which he says will complete the arcs of the young Xavier, Magneto, Mystique, and Beast established in this rebooted series. Kinberg is also keen to have fun with the movie's Reagan era setting. "The music, the fashion, the videogames: We really want to integrate all of that in the movie, and have it infuse the movie with a different vibe," said Kinberg. Although he chuckled and said "Could happen" at the suggestion of Dazzler making an appearance in the movie, Kinberg said the filmmakers are "certainly looking at mutants that would fit into the period."

 

Bryan Singer will direct X-Men: Apocalypse, which will star James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Oscar Isaac, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Tye Sheridan, and, yes, Rose Byrne.

 

Anything that gives Rose Byrne something to do is okay with me. Criminally underrated actress.

Did you hear about the recent Deadpool news? That Colossus will appear in the film however Daniel Cudmore who plays Colossus won't be in it. So I hope they don't recast him. That would be a slap in the face.
