Clever Carmen

Carmen Kass has credited her successful modelling career to her skills at chess.

"In life we make decisions and we have choices," she said. "Chess trains you to see through the head. You can make better choices, you can analyse good and bad, and you can see further. Life is a chain of command - basically, one thing leads to another, and if you make the wrong move, there are consequences."

The model, who has fronted campaigns for Gucci, Chanel and Dolce & Gabanna, dismissed her foray into politics as a "dirty business". In 2004 Kass joined Estonia's Res Publica party and also ran for the European Parliament.

"Unfortunately even if you have a great idea, there are so many things that stop you. It's hard, even if you have the best intentions," she told Sunday Times Style.

Kass also suggested she may quit modelling in favour of going to university to study either philosophy or law.

"One should never stop learning," she said.
