BECKHAM BACK FOR REAL

Real Madrid should be boosted by the return of David Beckham from suspension for this weekend's Primera Liga match with Recreativo Huelva.

Beckham was forced to sit out last Saturday's thrilling 4-3 home victory over Espanyol after picking up a booking in the previous match against Sevilla which resulted in a one-match ban.

Although Madrid managed to see off Espanyol without Beckham, coach Fabio Capello could hand an immediate recall to the former England captain for Sunday's game seventh-placed Recreativo as the Spanish giants look to consolidate top spot in La Liga.

Beckham has been in fine form since returning from a six-week injury lay-off last month and, after the midfielder had his suspension for the game against Sevilla overturned, Capello said: "I am happy, he is a very important player for us."

Beckham, 32, has a maximum of four Primera Liga matches left before he leaves Madrid this summer to take up a contract with Major League Soccer side Los Angeles Galaxy.

Madrid moved to the top of the table after beating Espanyol to record their seventh win in eight league matches, climbing above two-time reigning champions Barcelona, who were held to a 1-1 home draw by lowly Real Betis on Sunday.

Both Madrid and Barca have 66 points, but Capello's men are top due to their superior head-to-head record against the Catalan side this season.

Madrid won the most recent of their 29 league titles in the 2002/03 season, while they have failed to win a single major honour since Beckham joined the club in the summer of 2003.

Golden Foot 2007

Beckham, Cannavaro, Roberto Carlos, and Raúl among the ten finalists for the prestigious international award

The Golden Foot award is given to players over the age of 29 who have excelled on the pitch -both individually and as a member of their team- and who have earned the esteem of fans and football experts alike. Four Madridistas are among the ten finalists in this year's edition: David Beckham, Roberto Carlos, Raúl, and Fabio Cannavaro. The winner will be announced on 3 September in Monte Carlo.

Real Madrid will be well-represented during the 2007 edition of the Golden Foot award in Monte Carlo. Of the 10 aspiring finalists, four are Madridistas who will go up against the likes of Cafú, Del Piero, Figo, Giggs, Henry, and Maldini. The award is presented to footballers over the age of 29 who have excelled on the pitch and who have earned the esteem of fans and football experts alike. Personality is also taken into account.

The jury is comprised of 23 Golden Foot media partner representatives, while fans around the world make the final decision via Internet by accessing the award's official website. The winner leaves a permanent mold of his footprints on the “The Champions Promenade”, an international football “Walk of Fame” located on the seafront of the Principality of Monaco.

Prince Albert of Monaco presented last year's award to Ronaldo. The Brazilian international succeeded Ukraine's Shevchenko by taking 20,343 of the votes cast on the Golden Foot's official website. Luis Figo, Alessandro Del Piero, Beckham, Raúl, and Zidane were among the nominees. The list of winners of this prestigious award is vast, including Di Stéfano, Gento, Platini, Maradona, Best, Rivellino, Riva, and Weah.

Fabio Cannavaro is the odds-on favourite of this this year's edition, having already won the Balon d'Or, the FIFA World Player, the FIFpro, and the award naming him the best Italian player. He also raised the World Cup trophy as captain of the Italian national team.
