July Cover Girl: Genevieve Morton

Catching Genevieve Morton in the precious moments between shoots, beaches, apps and film meetings is a rare treat. GQ gets an exclusive on what SA’s favourite Benoni-born LA-based model us up to now.

For someone who has a degree in communications, it can be quite tricky to get hold of Genevieve Morton. Last time GQ spoke to her  she had laid roots in New York, the hive to which every aspirant model moves for its incandescent allure and the opportunity to make it big. This time however, Gen has moved to LA, but that’s still not where I eventually track her down.

‘I’m in the Bahamas!’ she declares, ‘enjoying the amazing weather. It’s literally paradise down here.’And then I remember that I’ve been trying to find a supermodel, one whose globe-trotting makes her nearly impossible to get hold of. But despite all of the travelling, LA has proved to be a home away from home for the last year or so. ‘It reminds me of Cape Town, just on a larger scale,’ she says. ‘I love it there. I love being active outdoors – whether it’s hiking in the canyons or paddleboarding in the ocean. Also, I find everyone loves an accent; they find it so fascinating so mine is always a conversation starter. No one ever knows what I’m talking about when I say I’m putting my tekkies on [laughs].’

To be clear, Gen grew up in Benoni and then Durban, but the South African is more than used to being abroad. Having been given a break years ago, it’s been nonstop ever since. ‘I guess I owe a large amount of my success to Sports Illustrated. They’re like family to me; I’ve been working with them for over five years. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the most talented people in the industry. I feel very grateful for all the amazing opportunities.’
