"I grew up in Utah in a little farming town of about 200 people a couple of hours south of Salt Lake City. There was nothing in my town, not even a grocery store. People wore Hollister and Abercrombie & Fitch tee shirts–I didn’t! My mom wouldn’t let me. I didn’t really have style icons growing up because my mom didn’t let me read magazines or watch that much TV, so I didn’t know anything about fashion or celebrities or icons. I grew up shopping online because you couldn’t really go to the stores, and even if you did go, there wasn’t always everything there.

You are definitely judged at [model] castings for what you’re wearing. There was a point when I was really nervous about what I was going to wear. Now I just want to be comfortable because what matters most at a casting, and for anything, is how you feel. I just dress so I feel good. I get paid a lot in trade. I have a lot of Marc Jacobs stuff just because I’ve worked with him a lot, and he’s really good about that. He lets you choose five items–oh I need to do that again! Anyways…it’s really smart of him, I think, because then the models are all wearing his clothes.

I love jewelry; It's so easy to change up my look with jewelry. My brother makes big jewelry with fossils and stones from Utah, so I used to wear a lot of big rings, but lately I’ve been liking more dainty rings, like layering and stacking thin gold ones. I think it feels more feminine. I love Love, Adorned, too. It’s probably my favorite store. I want to live there, but I rarely go in because then I want to buy everything.

There’s this amazing, amazing antique store in Utah. It’s the best vintage store I’ve ever seen in the entire world called Cat's Cradle. I have this one ring from Cat's Cradle that's a gold ball with rubies and sapphires on it, so it kind of looks like a planet. When you pull this little hook out, it unfolds and there are three frames for pictures. I rarely wear it because it’s so beautiful that it’s not an everyday piece. My dad always says, “What’s this bill for Cat’s Cradle? Is that cat food? I can’t believe cat food costs this much!”

I would like to make jewelry someday. I like the jewelry by a friend of mine, Katie Hillier. We’ve talked about–for like 3 years probably–me designing some pieces with her, but because we’re in different countries it’s been pass and go. We’ll talk about it each time we’re together but haven’t really sat down to do it. Hopefully that happens soon." --Hannah Holman to Shop Ghost

HANNAH'S SHOP GHOST TIPS

I like Asos, I got into Asos last summer. I also like The Outnet and Yoox. I like Groupon, even though that’s not clothes. I get a lot of body stuff, like massages, spa treatments, and facials on Groupon.

Model-Slash: Outdoorswoman Hannah Holman

August 20, 2012 1:21 pm

In our “Model-Slash” series, Style.com profiles models whose ambitions and drive extend beyond the catwalk.

Growing up on a cattle ranch in rural Utah—in a town with a population of 200—gave Hannah Holman a backstory quite a bit different from most other models’. Not many girls, after all, can claim to have stalked and shot a mountain lion at the age of 13 (more on that later). Now 21, Holman is the face of Marc Jacobs’ Daisy fragrance and has graced Jacobs’ catwalks as well as walking for Chanel, Valentino, and Jonathan Saunders. Holman’s forte, however, is magazine editorials, and she’s done scores of those recently for publications like Elle France, W, Love, and V. “Being in front of the camera is very meditative and I just get into this zone,” she tells Style.com. “You feed off the energy of the photographer and the crew and have the freedom to move and transform.”

Holman was discovered in a local shopping mall when she was 15, and her rise in modeling was initially difficult for her family to grasp. “It’s a hard industry to understand, especially when you’re used to such a simple lifestyle,” she says. “Now they’re all very supportive. My dad, in particular, is always bragging about me to his hunting friends.” When she was younger, the two would ride the tractor around their 3,000-acre property, bringing out baled hay to the cows and rounding them up. Being an outdoorsy girl, Holman is naturally a seasoned horseback rider, too. “We would do cattle drives four or five times a year and go hunting in the fall, winter, and spring—usually for elk or deer,” she says. Her memorable cougar experience was a one-time thing, she explained, because the government permits only a few of the cats to be killed each year. “It’s a lottery system and my name was drawn by chance,” Holman said. “So we went out with a friend who is a hunting guide and knows exactly which peaks and little valleys they hang out in. Mountain lions often hang out up in trees but this one went into a cave. I was scared it was going to attack us and took a few shots with a .30-30 rifle but ran out of bullets, so my dad handed me his pistol and that was the lucky shot.” Holman returns home as often as she can to hit the trails with her family. “When I first left to model, I thought I’d never want to go back, and now when I’m there again, I appreciate it so much,” she says.

Aside from modeling, Holman also keeps busy designing jewelry, which reminds her of her younger brother, who studies metalsmithing. “At first I was into more earthy, raw jewelry similar to what you’d find out west, but now I like making things that are a bit more feminine and dainty,” she said. Holman has recently been collaborating with Katie Hillier, who designs jewelry for Marc by Marc Jacobs as well as her own label, on a few pieces, including a charm necklace that will “hopefully be in stores by Christmas,” according to Holman. “It’s good to have outlets because in modeling, you’re often alone, and it’s easy to get absorbed in your career.” —Brittany Adams

MODELS /HANNAH HOLMAN

PHO TOS BE N N Y HO RN E

Hannah Holman is a Utah native and one of the industry’s freshest face. With eyes that cut through to the core, Holman is the go-to girl for all the big players. With campaigns for the likes of Miu Miu, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Burberry and T by Alexander Wang under her belt, this little beauty sure packs a punch. A newbie DJ and self-confessed dork, Holman is happiest when she is having a good time laughing her ass off with those she loves.

I was spotted at... A shopping mall in Utah.

To unwind after a hard day’s work I like to... Socialise! Preferably in the company of people who are comfortable doing very little!

On my iPod right now is... Loads of mash-ups given to me from my brother and all my old favourites from home like Willie Nelson and the Eagles.

I keep fit by... Eating regularly and training whenever there is time!

The last movie I watched was... Running with Scissors.

My favourite food is... Squash!

The last book I read was... Stiff by Mary Roach.

My pin-up boy is... I don’t get crushes on boys I can’t have!

My beauty routine consists of... Wash and moisturise my face twice a day. Other than that, it’s pretty dependent on my mood and stamina.

People would be surprised to know that I... Hunt whenever I’m home and have shot a deer and a mountain lion.

On the runway I’m thinking about... How fun this job is!

My hometown is... Where I go to come back down to earth.

My biggest indulgence in life is... Giving. It’s ironically selfish how much I love to do things for people.

My favourite people in the fashion world are... My supporters and believers.

One of my favourite jobs so far has been... Oh no, there are too many! I honestly couldn’t say.

My wardrobe consists of... Clothes from trade, random articles from home and loads of jackets, coats and sweatshirts.

I’m looking forward to... Summer!

If I wasn’t modelling I would be... Going to college and dating nerds.

My defining personality trait is... My laugh.

My nickname is... There are loads: Han, Holman, double H, Hannie, Dewey... it goes on.

Model Cities: Hannah Holman's Paris

Marc Jacobs model Hannah Holman tells us about the Paris she loves.

06 MARCH 2011

Hannah Holman, 20, was born in Utah. She is the face of the Marc Jacobs fragrance Daisy Eau So Fresh.

The first thing I do in Paris is… unpack. I stay with friends in the Bastille or Marais district if possible, so that I can feel like a real local

You will usually find me in… the Irish pub Carr's with my fellow fashion hide-outs

Best for breakfast: Café Angelina, which has amazing hot chocolate

I travel by… métro. But definitely ride a motorbike if you can. It is so exhilarating

Best for lunch: Hôtel Costes is a must during fashion week just for the buzz

Best for dinner: Robert et Louise for steak, and Le Repaire de Cartouche [both in the Marais], a bistro where chefs eat when visiting Paris

My best Paris bargain: a vintage military jacket from Les Puces de Saint-Ouen

The last thing I bought in Paris was… a T-shirt that said i love le marais. Ha ha

Most romantic spot: Les Buttes Chamount park. Or any place dark and moody with good wine and music!

Best for drinks: Le Fumoir is the only place I can find fresh ginger to mix with lime, vodka and soda. I love it! Also La Perle in the Marais for a glass of rosé

Best place to party: Friends' hotel rooms! Other than that I usually get dragged around with the other girls to Le Baron in ave Marceau

Best for gifts: Colette and Galeries Lafayette

Best for people-watching: Café de Flore in the sixth and Le Progrès in the Marais

My favourite Paris designers: Louis Vuitton and Karl Lagerfeld

My essential Paris beauty product is… Decléor oil

In Paris I normally wear… heels and designer labels

If you want to feel really Parisian… go for a walk along the Seine or on Ile Saint-Louis

My favourite S/S11 shows: Sonia Rykiel and Ungaro . And I loved my dress and make-up at Louis Vuitton

Don't leave Paris without… Mariage Frères teas, Ladurée macaroons, and anything and almost everything from the pharmacies

This fashion week, Grazia Daily is going backstage to grab the hottest models du jour, to discover their beauty recommendations, their top pics from the shows and quiz them about all the gossip from about their glamorous lives.

Hannah Holman

Q. Which have been your favourite shows so far this season and why?

A. Marc Jacobs always has such an anticipation because you have no idea what he's going to think of next- and Jeremy Scott is always so much fun, as the collection is cool, but also very wearable.

Q. What is your ultimate beauty tip that you have ever picked up backstage ?

A. When applying lipstick use a foundation covered q-tip to smooth edges.

Q. If you were only allowed three beauty products to get you through fashion week which would you choose ?

A. Can I have four? Bio oil, Decleor eye makeup remover, Christine Chin exfoliating cleanser and the Premier Model Skin Model Kit for essentials.

Q. What are you currently wearing ?

A. A Marc by Marc Jacobs tea dress, an Elise Overland leather vest (it used to be leather jacket until last night......)

Q. What are your current fashion obsessions - which pieces or labels can you not live without ?

A. Vintage has become a big part of my wardrobe recently. What I love about it is you are less likely to see anyone else wearing the same thing as you.

Hannah Holman Talks Marc by Marc, Personal Style, and Her Very Own Jewelry Line at This Morning’s Daisy Eau So Fresh Launch

Unlike Steff,I’m not a model girl. I have my faves, but I’m not on Ford’s website every weekend searching for the latest faces on the board.

But I am a huge fan of Hannah Holman. We chose her as one of our favorite models to watch about a year ago,and soon enough she landed in campaigns for Alexander Wang and Marc by Marc Jacobs. And she’s got a supporter in Katie Grand, which always means good things.

So I stole Cheryl’s beat for the morning and headed over to The Empire Hotel, where Hannah hosted a breakfast for Marc Jacobs’ new Daisy Eau So Fresh. She’s the face of the gorgeous campaign, which was shot by Jurgen Teller in Spain on a bed of daisies–and a white horse–and she answered all of our questions about the shoot, her latest projects, and why she is happy to be backing a scent she actually likes:

It’s easy for her to be the face of this fragrance. “Daisy was my first ever perfume–I bought it when I was in high school, so it’s funny,” the model said of Eau So Fresh’s sister scent. (In perfume speak, Eau So Fresh–a mix of grapefruit, jasmine, and musk–is a flanker. It’s supposed to complement the original scent, not upstage it. But truthfully, we prefer this over the original Daisy.)

She’s got grand plans. “I really like designing jewelry,” she said. “I’m designing a piece of jewelry for Katie Hillier, and want to eventually launch my own line.” Hannah’s brother also designs jewelry.

Even models aren’t perfect. “It’s hard to cast me in runway shows, because I’m petite [read: because she's not built like a hanger], but I always do Katie’s shows.”

Her personal style shines through. “I went shopping with a stylist friend of mine the other day, and she said, ‘Who do you want to dress like?’ I said, ‘I want to dress like me!’” Today, she was wearing a lacy Marc by Marc dress topped by a deconstructed Elise Overland leather jacket.

Hannah was sweet enough to stick around for a while after the event just to chat. It’s so nice to meet well-adjusted, interesting people who love what they do. Oh and by the way, the perfume really does smell good. We promise.

(You can buy Daisy: Eau So Fresh at Bloomingdale’s.)

What It’s Really Like Eating Breakfast With A Model

by Verena von Pfetten | 6:38 pm, February 20th, 2011

Like most fashion-obsessed people, we’re also obsessed with models. So when we got an invite to have breakfast with Utah stunner Hannah Holman in honor of Marc Jacobs‘ new fragrance Daisy Eau So Fresh (of which she’s the face, natch), we couldn’t turn it down.

Breakfast was thoughtfully arranged for 8:30AM at Ed’s Chowder House, which is more or less directly across from Lincoln Center. (We, however, not-so-thoughtfully arrived almost thirty minutes late after one of our French Bulldogs took a solo ride in our building’s elevator. It took about 10 minutes and a lot of stairs before we found him wandering happily around the fourth floor. Anyway!) We arrived to platters of bagels, croissants, pastries, bowls of yogurt and fruit, and freshly made smoothies —which is to say: it was a delightful spread for a week during which we survived mainly on coffee and by carbo-loading at 10 at night.

Holman was as friendly as she is beautiful in a Marc by Marc Jacobs dress she paired with a personally deconstructed Elise Overland leather jacket —and more than willing to answer plenty of our questions. She offered some handy product recommendations, beauty tips, and revealed she’s got big plans for a jewelry line with Katie Hillier. As for the fragrance, Daisy Eau So Fresh is a light, powdery and citrus-y scent that we’re already in love with —and it’s a fitting campaign for Holman, whose first fragrance was Daisy. Perfect.

What’s the one thing you can’t leave the house without? My phone. No, but beauty-wise, Dermalogica has this cream called Barrier Repair and it’s amazing, especially when you’re flying. It feels like it puts this layer on your skin, and I actually always take that everywhere. That and Paw Paw lip ointment is awesome. I take both of those everywhere. The lip ointment is also good if you have dry skin, hormones and things, you get dry skin on your chin and you can put the Paw Paw on that too. And it’s good for your hair. If you have frizzies or something, just put a little bit in your hands [and then rub your hair.]

We know that you’ve already started to DJ, what other projects are you working on, what’s the next move for you? I’m actually starting to design jewelry, which I’m really excited about. I’ve always been a fan of jewelry and my brother makes jewelry… and I’ve always been really into it. And I was talking to Katie Hillier, who does the jewelry for Marc by Marc, and she actually has her own line and she designed an earring for me. I was like, “Do you have one like this?” and she said, “No, but I’ll make it!” and made an earring. And I was talking to her this season and saying I wanted to make jewelry and she said to just do it… and so, at the end of the season she wants me to design [a line], so it will be for Katie Hillier and start from there. I’m still young, I still have time luckily. And hopefully once I’m done modeling, I’ll have my own jewelry line. I have some ideas, but I keep forgetting, there’s so much going on, she tells me to take a sketch book around, I need to start.

What are some of the best hair and makeup tips you’ve picked up along the way? This one is actually a bit creepy —hemorrhoid cream for your eyes. But you can actually only buy it in Europe, because in America they’ve taken out the agent that takes down puffiness, or it has less alcohol, or something. It’s different in America, so buy that in Europe. With your hair, I don’t do anything with my hair. I wash it and condition it and once in a while I’ll do a mask during fashion week or something. But I don’t blow dry it or anything, and hairdressers always say, “Oh, your hair’s so good for being bleached, what do you do?” which, it’s not anymore, but I just say I don’t do anything, that’s the best way. My roommate always complains about her hair but she blowdrys it everyday. So I think the less you do, it keeps it healthier. I’ve learned little tricks, curls, but I don’t really do them. With makeup, this is one thing I do now. I was quite young when I started so I didn’t, but patting the base in and the concealer, instead of rubbing it. Not picking. I love to do that, so not picking. And mascara, start at the root. It’s things that everyone in fashion knows, but to me, I didn’t.
