Nina Dobrev (born Nina Const Dobreva; January 9, 1989) is a Bulgarian-Canadian actress, singer, instrumentalist, and model currently living in Canada. She played the role Mia Jones, the single teenage mother on Degrassi: The Next Generation since the show's sixth season. She currently stars as Elena Gilbert in the TV series The Vampire Diaries.

Early life

Dobrev was born in the Bulgarian capital Sofia, but moved to Canada at the age of two and has lived in Toronto, Ontario since. She attended J.B. Tyrrell Sr. Public School and Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts in Scarborough, Ontario. From a very young age she showed great enthusiasm and talent for the arts: dance, gymnastics, theater, music, visual arts, and acting. Dobrev attended the Dean Armstrong Acting school where she was discovered by many different talent agencies in Toronto.

Modeling jobs led to commercials, which then turned into film auditions. Shortly thereafter, she booked roles in feature films including Fugitive Pieces, Away from Her, Never Cry Werewolf, and the television series Degrassi: The Next Generation. She was also in an MTV movie called The American Mall on CTV. She has landed the lead role in The CW's drama pilot The Vampire Diaries, playing Elena, a human who is caught between two vampire brothers.[1]

Personal life

Dobrev attended Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts in Toronto until her graduating year. She entered secondary studies at Ryerson University in Toronto, majoring in Sociology, before dropping out in 2008 to pursue her acting career.[2]

She was reportedly arrested on August 22, 2009, along with cameraman Tyler Shields, 27, and actresses Sara Canning, Kayla Ewell, Krystal Vayda, and Candice Accola, charged with disorderly conduct and released on bond. The group were accused of hanging from an I-75 overpass and sitting on its parapet.[3] They were in Georgia filming her TV series "The Vampire Diaries." However, on September 12, 2009, "Degrassi: The Next Generation" producer Stephen Stohn announced on his Twitter account, "do NOT believe the story about Nina!!!! It was just a publicity stunt by the CW. No-one was arrested!!!!!" XD
