Joseph Gordon-Levitt Joins List of Contenders for Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy

Word of Gordon-Levitt’s involvement comes via Deadline, who report that Marvel has added JGL to the list of actors they are considering for the lead role of Peter Quill. There’s no confirmation of whether Gordon-Levitt has been offered the role, but he’s certainly the most high-profile actor that has been mentioned thus far. For those unaware, Peter Quill aka Star-Lord was born of a human mother and alien father, and he’s a master strategist and combat expert who wears an ability-enhancing suit and pilots a psychically-linked ship. The character will serve as the audience’s introduction to the galactic world of

Joseph Gordon-Levitt of ‘Dark Knight Rises’ may play Star-Lord in superhero epic ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

“Guardians of the Galaxy” concept art. Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s competitors for the Star-Lord role include “Zero Dark Thirty” star Joel Edgerton, “Cloud Atlas’” Jim Sturgess, “Boardwalk Empire” alum Jack Huston and Zachary Levi of “Chuck.”

As if being the next potential Batman weren’t enough, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is reportedly circling Marvel Studios’ superhero epic “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

The 31-year-old “The Dark Knight Rises” star is on the short list of actors to play Star-Lord in director James Gunn’s epic about a team of intergalactic superheroes, Deadline.com reported.

He joins a crowded field of actors that includes “Zero Dark Thirty” star Joel Edgerton, “Cloud Atlas’” Jim Sturgess, “Boardwalk Empire” alum Jack Huston and Zachary Levi of “Chuck,” according to the report.

The end of “The Dark Knight Rises,” which suggests Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character is prepared to take over from Batman, has fueled speculation he might take on the role in “Justice League,” especially since Christian Bale has said he will not reprise the role without director Christopher Nolan. Nolan is believed to have finished with Batman movies.

Unlike his distinguished competition, however, Gordon-Levitt has some superhero experience, having played a cop who becomes a de facto sidekick to Batman in “The Dark Knight Rises.” At the end of the movie, the final installment of Christopher Nolan’s trilogy, Levitt’s character seems poised to take up the cowl after Bruce Wayne’s apparent death.

That climactic reveal has led to speculation that the actor will play a new Batman in the upcoming “Justice League,” Warner Bros.’ answer to Marvel’s blockbuster superhero movie “The Avengers” – especially since Christian Bale has said publicly he won’t play the Caped Crusader again unless Nolan returns to direct.

Marvel has high hopes for “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which is based on superheroes that first appeared in the comic books in the 1960s. The movie, scheduled for a 2014 release and billed as a “Star Wars”-scale epic, would give the studio a second potential franchise to go along with “The Avengers.”

Joseph Gordon-Levitt To Host 2013 Sundance Film Festival Awards Ceremony

We'll have to wait with bated breath to find out if, in fact, Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play Star-Lord in the upcoming Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy, but we know this for sure now: the actor, who is a big time movie star with some serious indie cred to boot, will host the 2013 Sundance Film Festival Awards Ceremony.

The Sundance Institute announced that JGL — who had a Ryan Gosling-like year of handsome ubiquity in 2012 with films like The Dark Knight Rises, Looper, Lincoln, Premium Rush, and that very memorable Saturday Night Live opening monologue — will be the emcee for the ceremony, which takes place on January 26 in Park City, Utah. (The event will be live-streamed on www.sundance.org/festival, for those who aren't lucky enough to see him in the flesh.)

John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, said in a statement, “Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s accomplished and original artistic perspectives have contributed greatly to Sundance Institute and the independent film community. As host, he is sure to add flair to our Awards Ceremony in similarly exciting ways, and we are thrilled that he will join us in recognizing outstanding achievements at this year’s Festival.” The star tweeted that he is "Honored & excited" to take on hosting duties.

The JGL-hosted show will honor the feature films that play at Sundance (the 31-year-old actor has starred in Sundance darlings like (500) Days of Summer and had his own short film Sparks debut at fest back in 2009), while awards for the short films will be handed out at a separate event. The Sundance Film Festival kicks off on January 17 and runs through the 26th.

Chris Meloni, Josh Brolin, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt journey to 'Sin City'

These past few days, "Sin City: A Dame To Kill For", the feature film adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel, announced more actors to its already impressive cast. Christopher Meloni, Josh Brolin, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have all signed up for the project.

Christopher Meloni, as revealed by Deadline Hollywood yesterday, will be playing a cop while Josh Brolin will be playing the role of Dwight. In the graphic novel, Dwight is betrayed by Ava Lord, the love of his life, and so he goes through considerable length to exact his revenge. Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller, again co-directing an adaptation of Miller's graphic novel, remarked that, "Dwight is a constant character throughout the Sin City world and 'A Dame To Kill For' is a defining episode in his life. We’re looking forward to Josh’s take on Dwight."

Meanwhile, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is no longer attached to play Peter Quill in Marvel Studios' upcoming "Guardians Of The Galaxy". Instead, JGL will be playing the role of Johnny in Sin City: A Dame To Kill For". JGL expressed his enthusiasm for the role by saying that, "I love how the first movie uses VFX, not to make fake things look real, but to create a heightened world unburdened by the look and feel of reality. Plus, nobody makes a badass like Mr. Rodriguez."

Production is already underway and the three actors will be joining the original cast members: Academy Award® nominee Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, and Jaime King.

Interesting, the titular dame has not been cast/announced.
