Leonardo DiCaprio’s Big Leap

The star who showed the most improvement on our Celebrity 100 list this year was Leonardo DiCaprio. The actor jumped from 71st place last year to 15th this year.

How did he do it? Well Inception helped. The 2010 hit, which earned $825 million at the global box office, contributed a healthy chunk of DiCaprio’s $77 million in earnings over the last 12 months. That’s a big jump from the $28 million we estimate he earned between June 1, 2009 and June 1, 2010.

But our list measures money and fame and DiCaprio’s attracted plenty of both. He has 1 million followers for his Twitter feed where he (or an assistant) tweets mostly about environmental causes that are close to the actor’s heart.

And any news of his love life garners instant press attention. Recent rumors that 36-year-old DiCaprio is seeing actress Blake Lively causes his name to quickly trend on Yahoo.

Can he keep it up? DiCaprio has a habit of attaching himself to serious, adult-themed movies that don’t always spark at the box office. Look at films like Body of Lies which grossed a mediocre $115 million on a budget of $70 million or Revolutionary Road which grossed only $75 million. His two recent films, Inception and the hit thriller Shutter Island, could prove to be exceptions in his more recent career.

He is next slated to play complicated former FBI head J. Edgar Hoover in a biopic directed by Clint Eastwood whose latest film, Hereafter, was a rare miss earning only $105 million at the global box office. Will audiences want to see DiCaprio exploring Hoover’s cross-dressing side? It’s a risky bet but then so was Inception, an original story with a plot so complicated that it felt like a dream.

    Leonardo DiCaprio speaks at the Cinema For Peace inaugural dinner at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival held at the Carlton Hotel on Wednesday (May 18) in Cannes, France.

    The event honored Sean Penn for his charity work in Haiti and benefited his J/P Hatian Relief Organization.

    The 36-year-old actor, who recently split from his girlfriend of four years, Israeli model Bar Refaeli, spent time the day before with Blake Lively aboard a private yacht.

    Leo landed the number 15 spot on Forbes‘ list of the most powerful celebrities.

    Hehe I like it too Kat !!!! Ohhh and in regards to Efron.. I think he's making the effort to have a leo type career but so far he hasn't shown he has the acting chops like leo. Even when leo was young people could see the boy had some serious talent.

    So you either have it or you don't.... However i do wish him well he seems like a nice, genuine guy :)

    New photo of the cinema for peace in a french artcile they said that it was sean penn and robert de niro also and thet leo is waited to the party of armani after that. :wave:

    You know, it's kinda Zac Efron-related, but I think Leo shouldnt mentor him, but Robert Pattinson,

    I used to hate him, when you saw the crappy acting in Twilight, I didn't even finish the movie, it was that terrible, :no:

    but I watched Wather for Elephants and he is really good! :yes:

    And I think he would be perfect to emulate Leo's career of pretty-boy who is defenitaly able to act,

    and he's always avoiding the spotlight, and even dressing the way Leo does! :rofl:

    Another thing, I don't see a 'new' Leo, even at the party his was trying not to get his photo taken :p

    And what's up with hanging with the creepy, fat rappers who think they are the shit :dontgetit:

    Please, Leo stick to the company of Spielberg and DeNiro :clap:

    Leo pledges money for Haiti Relief effort

    ma for Peace dinner was held in aid of Sean Penn's Haiti foundation and some of the biggest names in Hollywood turned out to show their support.

    Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Uma Thurman, Jane Fonda, Ryan Gosling and Naomi Campbell were in attendance and lent considerable star power to the charity auction.

    DiCaprio took to the mic and announced he was pledging £50,000, then asked for three others in the Hotel Carlton ballroom to follow suit. Harvey Weinstein, Roberta Armani and Campbell's billionaire boyfriend Vladimir Doronin immediately put up their hands.

    The event, co-hosted by Ella Krasner, saw Penn make an impassioned speech about the ongoing crisis in Haiti. The actor has attracted more than his fair share of sniping over his charity work, but there is no denying his commitment to the cause.

    His J/P Haitian Relief Organisation has been on the ground since the 2010 earthquake, distributing emergency supplies and helping to rebuild the country's infrastructure.

    Some 600,000 people are still living in tented camps, having lost their homes.

    Penn said the problems in Haiti were far from insurmountable. "It's nine million people on half an island," he said. "They are at a crucial moment of courage and survival right now.
