Scouted in her native Hamburg at 13, she was signed up two years later to walk exclusively for Calvin Klein (in the prestigious opening slot) during New York Fashion Week, and starred in the brand’s campaign shortly after. ‘I used to blush when someone said hello,’ she smiles, shaking her head. ‘When I got the Calvin Klein show, my agents in New York were just like, “Don’t blush, you can’t blush on the runway!”’ We’re sitting cross-legged on the floor (she prefers it) while the team breaks for lunch at the Stella shoot in west London. There’s little sign of the shyness that plagued her in the beginning: she’s relaxed, friendly and extremely hard-working. No surprise, then, that she quickly made friends among the modelling elite. ‘Ali Stephens and Karlie Kloss were doing looks with me, and they were my best friends at the time. Ali, Karlie, Taryn [Davidson, who also modelled for Klein] and I had sleepovers because we’re all the same age, and we always had one mom there, usually Karlie’s or Taryn’s. Francisco [Costa, then Calvin Klein’s creative director] called us “the CK Four” because it was always the four of us. Those days gave me my best friends in fashion.’ Starting out, she didn’t know much about the fashion industry; her agency paid for her flights to shoot an Italian Vogue cover with Steven Meisel after she said, ‘I’m not paying for my flight. I’ve never heard of Meisel!’ She laughs at the memory. ‘Now, the older I am, I think wow – I did some amazing jobs when I was a teenager.’ Her career has been textbook supermodel-in-the-making: she donned wings on the Victoria’s Secret catwalk, shot Vogue covers acround the world, and from 2013 to 2014, dated Leonardo DiCaprio – who might consider a side-hustle as a model agent, given his dating history (she goes schtum at the mention of his name). In 2016, she founded the Toni Garrn Foundation, which raises money for girls’ education in Africa, and she has begun to take on acting roles, including in this summer’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. ‘I just want to do interesting characters. I don’t want to play the pretty girl next door because I do that every day on set.’ Her success might be due, in part, to her lack of diva behaviour. Only a couple of times did she come to work with a hangover: ‘It’s terrible to be jumping around in couture when you want to lay down being sick.’ When she was preparing for Victoria’s Secret shows, she would cut sugar, fruit and alcohol from her diet and work out two hours a day, but she generally leads a healthy, sensible lifestyle with the help of a nutritionist and trainer. ‘I’m getting paid so much money – I’ve been born like this, the only thing I have to work on is my body. I didn’t have to go to school for this. It’s just the job and I’m doing it in a healthy way.’ For now, home is both Berlin and New York, with stints in Los Angeles while acting. She takes the travel in her stride – her father’s work for a big oil company saw the family move ‘a million times’ – but in 10 years’ time, she’d like ‘a house with a big kitchen and closet and one or two kids and a couple of dogs. Pretty standard for someone who lives on a plane,’ she jokes. And will she still be modelling? ‘If people still want to take pictures of me, sure they can.’

This is Toni- I do not believe in miracles, but I believe in surprises. On the other hand, she should do all the planned work before leaving for Africa in November ... but it could be Milan..or Paris..hope so
