THUS ENDETH THE DROUGHT OF DANI!

Spains Dani Pedrosa won his first Moto GP race for over a year, at a dramatic race at the Sachsenring circuit in Germany. Pedrosa led from the very early stages, and produced a dominant performance as he quickly stretched a gap and win by over 10 seconds. Italian veteren Loris Capirossi put his poor showings of this season behind him to confidently claim 2nd, and Nicky Hayden continued his revival to claim the final podium spot.

Championship leader, Casey Stoner could only claim 5th, but his lead has increased as rival, Valentino Rossi crashed out early in the race, whilst attempting to overtake Randy de Puniet.

Total joy for the KTM squad in the 250cc event, as Hiro Ayoma led home teamate Miko Kallio for a team 1-2. Alew de Angelis completed the podium.

The 125cc race was won by Hungarian Galbor Talmacsi, who regains the Championship lead. Bradley Smith finished a highly creditable 8th.

AMAZING WHAT A LITTLE RAIN CAN DO!

Yet again a classic example of how a bit of changable weather can turn into an exciting and action packed entertainment. This afternoons Grand Prix form the 'Ring - where do i start? Race started as the rain began, all the field rushing into the pits to change tyres after only 1 lap, with a couple of exceptions. Kimi Raikkonen, the Pole-sitter and 1st lap leader missed the pit entry, so had to lap again on a soaking track on dry tyres; and Spyker driver Markus Winkelhock, who gambled on starting on wets and so took the early lead. However, in the first time since 2002, the race had to be "Red-Flagged" as several cars left the track on the first corner, the track conditions just too dangerous to continue.

The race re-started with the sun shining but the track still wet. Lewis Hamilton gambled on starting on drys, but it was too early, he lost masses of time and put himself well out of contention. After 5 or so laps Lewis lap times became competative, and the field changed again. At this point Felipe Massa led from Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen. Massa looked very comfortable at this stage and seemed to be on his way to victory, not so fortunate teamate Raikkonen whose car packed-up on him. Then with only about 10 laps to go back came the rain, and this proved to be in Alonsos favour, his Mclaren suiting the wet conditions. A superb overtake ( stop wingeing Massa - it was totally fair ) saw the Spanish Champ take the lead, which he held to the end. This means that Fernando is now only 2 points behind Lewis who failed to score. Brilliant to see Aussie Mark Webber at last have some luck, as a superb drive saw him claim the final podium spot.

Incidedently, just to remind us of how business orinated this sport(?) has become, a dispute over the rights to the name meant that this race was officially the "European" instead of the "German" Grand Prix. How pathetic!

THE POLE JINZ IS FINALLY BROKEN!

For the first time in the 2007 Moto Grand Prix season, the Pole-sitter converted it into a race victory. In yesterdays U.S. Moto GP the Casey Stoner, Ducati and Bridgestone combination dominated the entire weekend, heading every practice and qualifying session, before completely defeating the entire field in truly comprehensive fashion come race-day. Stoner lead the entire race apart from the very early stages of the first lap, and won by over 9 seconds. Suzukis Chris Vermeulen took 2nd, and Marco Melandri ( set to become Stoners Ducati teamate next season ) completed the podium. Valentino Rossi could only manage 4th ( the first Michelin runner ) so the Championship gap is now 44 points. With the form that Casey is showing it is difficult to see how even the genius of Vale can close a gap of that size.

There were no 250cc or 125cc races in America, and now the series enters a 4 week Summer break, with the next race being the Czech Republic GP at Brno on August 19th.

Talking of Brno, the WSBK series visited that venue yesterday. James Toseland got back into winning ways taking the first race from Max Biaggi, and the same 2 riders finished the 2nd race in reverse order, with the Italian adding to his impressive Grand Prix record at the Czech circuit. Next round is at Brands-Hatch, got my ticket!

  • 2 weeks later...

Well well well, Alsono certainly had an interesting qualifying tactic the other day!

I was surprised to see the action they took against him though, pushing him pack 5 places and all. I missed the race itself but was quite pleased to see Hamilton win. Boy, that kid has some talent!

I'm looking forward to Istanbul though, which is very much a 'Ferrari track'...
