Miguel Torres extends his contract with Real Madrid

Miguel Torres looked extremely happy as he walked into the Santiago Bernabéu, and that's because he was about to extend his contract with Real Madrid for another five years. A role model for all Real Madrid youth teamers, Torres will continue dazzling Madridista fans with his football.

Earlier this evening, Miguel Torres walked through the halls of the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on his way to the office of Ramón Calderón, where he signed a five year contract extension with Real Madrid. Although serious, it was obvious the 21-year old was thrilled to be signing his first contract for the Club's First Team.

After signing the extension, the President presented Torres with the fountain pen that both had used to ink their signatures. The player appeared very enthused with the chance to share a dressing room with new additions to the team that should only make the squad even stronger. But he also told the President that he would like to play alongside several of his Castilla teammates.

Following the signing, Ramón Calderón congratulated the player for a job well done all season long; work that even surprised new Madridista boss, Bernd Schuster. “I was talking to the coach and he told me that he was amazed with what you were able to do,” said Calderón to the player. “You joined the team when it was in a delicate situation and you made a name for yourself in a way most couldn't. Only the chosen are able to do such things,” concluded the President of Real Madrid.

All Madridistas can breath a little easier now that they can enjoy the presence of a great player and one of the best products the Factory has produced. Congratulations Miguel Torres.

"Schuster will bring in ideas the best represent Real Madrid"

One week ago, Miguel Torres extended his contract with Real Madrid through 2012. Excited about the start of the upcoming season, the defender is very optimistic about the team's chances of winning another title, and it's exactly what he told Spanish sports daily AS.

How did you feel after signing your First Team contract through 2012?

It was the most important moment of my life because, although I have played a lot for the First Team, I still considered myself a youth team player. Everything is different now, but I'm not going to ease up being that I still have to prove myself. I'm still bothered about missing the last game of the season to injury, but I'm better now.

Your life changed in a matter of months. How have you taken it?

Boy has it changed. I didn't know if I would even be staying on with Madrid at the start of last season. I'm here now thanks to the chance Míchel gave me and I'm still living the dream. I owe so much to him and Capello.

What made you stay with the Club and not leave like Mata and Valero did?

It's all I was thinking about. It was always a dream I had since joing the Club when I was eight. If I do leave some day, I hope it's because I have already done everything I can, and not because they don't want me anymore or because I am interested in pursuing other goals.

Do you think there is more reliance on the youth system is now?

Yes. They really mean it. Soldado's return is all the proof you need. Granero has also joined the First Team.

How does Capello's departure influence you being that he was your biggest proponent?

This is uncharted territory for me. Schuster is here now with a different way of seeing football. I do have one lasting hope though: he has faith in youth players. I hope I can play for him. He will bring in ideas the best represent Real Madrid.

Do Metzelder and Pepe make you nervous?

The competition has been stepped up. We have a great team, but we're all starting from scratch. Whoever deserves it most will play.

Where do you think you have a better chance of playing?

I'm still developing as a player and am versatile. I'll play wherever I am told to.

Are you worried about the players Barça have signed?

No, although they are among the best. We may have won the title last season, but I want more this year with the new players the Club has brought in.

What are your goals for the upcoming season?

I want Schuster to have faith in me, to win the League again, and to win another title. I would also like to debut with the Spanish national team. It's been my dream since I was a little kid.

How's your recovery coming along?

The important thing is to be in good shape. I don't feel 100% fit if I don't feel strong. That's why it is important for me to recover soon from the injury I've had since the end of the season. I did some ball work this morning and I hope to rejoin the squad this evening.

What are your first impressions of Schuster?

Everything's good for now. He has a very particular vision and he promotes companionship. My first impressions are very good. The newcomers are adapting quickly and we are enjoying ourselves. We are dying to express the coach's football philosophy.

It seems Schuster likes young players.

It is very important to have so many young palyers this year in the pre-season, especially those from then youth system. I believe he counts on young players; he treats us like veterans. I think the most important thing is for the youth system players to stay. The more 'youths' we have the better because we give our all at all times. We want to be successful at Real Madrid.

Has it sunk in yet that you are now a player on the first team?

I didn't consider myself a first team player last season besides playing in so many games. I am very excited now and I want to convince the coach of my capabilities in order to consolidate myself on the team. I think competition is important for the squad. I'm very excited with all this.

What's your biggest responsibility?

I feel responsible for the faith the Club has in me. Last year Míchel had great faith in me; I wouldn't be here if it hadn't been for him. The Club's confidence in me is now even greater and I am very grateful for that. I want to prove they haven't made a mistake.

Do you know where Schuster prefers you to play?

I haven't spoken to him about what he wants of me. I consider I am still developing as a player and that I am not deemed to play specifically in one position. I just want to help the team.

Your versatility gives you more chances.

Like every other young player, what I really need is to play as many games as possible to prove my worth. It's true that versatility gives you more chances of finding a spot on the team.

Do you think Real Madrid need more signings, such as Robben?

That's up to the Club to decide. I only know that I am going to compete with any newcomer. I'm sure every new player will want to help the team, and that's a good thing. We are all very excited and anxious about playing again, and the arrival of a player as good as Robben would benefit the squad.

What do you think of Barcelona's reinforcements?

They are very good. Our base is the team that won the League last season. If you add the new signings and a coach like Schuster to that, then I think Barcelona are the ones who should be worried.
