Karlie Kloss was always successful in fashion world but only became mainstream famous because of the whole Kaylor BS. You really think Martha Hunt and Lily Aldridge have huge fanbases? Or Gigi? All those girls are known in media for being part of Taylor's group. So the only really famous model in the video is Cara. And then you have a legit stars like Selena, Hayley Williams, Jessica Alba, Marishka Hargitay and Ellen Pompeo. So no, video was not a "smashing success" because of the models. Taylor Swift has a second most sold album of this decade (after 21 by Adele), she needs zero exposure from models on her sold out tour.
