  1. Borussia Moenchengladbach ended holders Schalke's bid to retain the German Cup with a 3-1 win on Wednesday to book their spot in the quarter-finals while fourth division club Holstein Kiel stunned Bundesliga's Mainz 2-0. Marco Reus struck twice and Juan Arango added another as Schalke, without coach Huub Stevens on the bench due to family reasons, ended the game with nine men after the dismissal of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar early in the second half and Jermaine Jones in stoppage time. "We have worked hard this year. You need players who understand what you want to do and my players are intelligent," said Gladbach coach Lucien Favre. "We defended well in the first half and scored a goal but then we lost our concentration a bit. But it worked out in the end." Kiel, who beat second division clubs Energie Cottbus and Duisburg in the previous rounds, took an unexpected lead when Mainz' Anthony Ujah headed a corner into his own net after six minutes on a rugged pitch suitable only for lower division play. The hosts doubled their lead in the 63rd minute when Steve Mueller fired in completely unmarked at the far post after a 30-metre free-kick to spark wild celebrations among the northern club's 10,000 fans. "It is sometimes not easy to come back from a goal down against us," said Kiel coach Thorsten Gutzeit. "We were lucky at the right times today, we scored our goals at just the right time." Hertha Berlin, with assistant coach Rainer Widmayer in charge after the sacking of Markus Babbel and Michael Skibbe announcing he was taking over from Jan. 3, beat Kaiserslautern 3-1 to advance. VfB Stuttgart scored all three goals in their 2-1 win over Hamburg SV, with Cacau striking twice and William Kvist scoring an own goal as they ended their opponents' nine-match unbeaten run under coach Thorsten Fink. In a fiery encounter, Gladbach took the lead with Juan Arango's smooth left-footed curled drive from 16 metres. Schalke then had top scorer Klaas-Jan Huntelaar sent off two minutes after the restart for dissent and it did not take long for the hosts to make the extra man count with Reus finding lots of space just outside the box to fire in for a two-goal cushion. Gladbach missed a handful of clear scoring chances as they dominated but substitute Julian Draxler cut the deficit in the 70th, tapping in after keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen had briefly saved a Manuel Jurado shot. Germany international Reus settled any Gladbach nerves when keeper Lars Unnerstall failed to clear the ball allowing the forward to score in an empty goal before Schalke's Jones was sent off with a second yellow card in stoppage time. "We made our lives difficult with the first sending off right after the restart. Gladbach's third goal then broke our backs," said Schalke's Draxler.

  6. Scotland full-back Chris Paterson has announced his retirement from international rugby. Paterson won 109 caps, scoring 809 points - both records - and is the only Scot to have appeared in four Rugby World Cup tournaments. The 33-year-old has been hampered by a groin injury of late, impacting on his place-kicking, and now Scotland are will enter the Six Nations Championship next year without the Edinburgh stalwart. "I've always said I wanted to bow out at the highest level of the game, while I still had the ability to go on," said Paterson. "Since coming back (from the World Cup) I've had a while to think about it and I believe now is the right time to make my decision, especially when I've still been playing well at that level. "My biggest fear would be devaluing what I have achieved and devaluing the jersey. You have to stop at some point and this is the right time for me," he added. Scotland coach Andy Robinson paid tribute to Paterson. "What a fantastic career Chris has had for Scotland. He should be celebrated as one of Scotland's greatest ever internationalists," said Robinson. "I respect his decision and thank him for all he has done. Having coached against him, he was a player I always earmarked as a real threat. "Coaching him has been a delight, primarily because of his many attributes, not least that constant desire to get better." Paterson, who will be 34 in March, will continue to play for Edinburgh until the end of the season, while there is the option of a one-year extension to his contract.
  7. Veteran Munster prop John Hayes is set to retire after the Boxing Day clash with Connacht at Thomond Park. Hayes, who represented Ireland in 105 Tests and the British and Irish Lions twice, was poised to quit at the end of last season after helping Munster to the domestic title. However he agreed a short-term deal to help the club out during the World Cup. The 38-year-old, who made 211 appearances for Munster, has been on the outskirts at the province's since the Springbok BJ Botha has established himself as their first-choice tighthead prop. Stephen Archer has also come through the club's academy to make six appearances this season and with Peter Borlase back to full fitness Munster now have plenty of options up-front. *Lawes extends contract with Saints - Northampton Saints lock Courtney Lawes has signed a new deal to remain at Franklin's Garden's until 2015. PR
  8. The French Anti-Doping Agency (AFLD) has handed French winger Yoann Huget another month's suspension for having missed three doping controls last season. The 24-year-old Bayonne flyer - capped five times - had already missed the World Cup after he was slapped with a three month ban by the French Rugby Federation (FFR) for breaking dope testing whereabout rules. All players are required to make their movements known to officials so that drugs tests can be carried out. In a statement the AFLD explained the motivation behind their decision -which was lenient given it is usually a suspension of over six months for this type of infraction - saying they had taken into account the fact he had missed out on the World Cup where France reached the final. Huget accepted that he was at fault, putting the missed tests down to negligence on his own behalf. He returned to action at the end of last month and has played three matches since for the Top 14 strugglers, who are fourth from bottom of the table and just three points above the relegation places. * Jones set to coach Japan - Former Wallabies coach Eddie Jones has reportedly been chosen to replace All Blacks legend John Kirwan as Japan's coach. *Jones gets top job with Russia - Former Sale Sharks boss Kingsley Jones has been elevated to head coach of Russia's national team, leading the side until RWC 2015. * Skinner cited by ERC - Harlequins flanker Will Skinner will face a disciplinary hearing in Dublin on Thursday following his red card in Sunday's Heineken Cup win against Toulouse. 15. I agree with you, he is really in love with Sara. And I love the this couple! He is very much in love but his stupid in love, I don't understand him he seems to be feeding the press more and more on things he should keep to himself. He puts his relation out there for all to talk about and comment on good or bad and then he wants to act like his pissed with the paparazzi's when they take photos of him/his girlfriend. I think famous people who use the social networks should not complain about the press when they fuel interest in their private lives and he does it a lot and then bitches about it. You can't have your cake and eat it too Iker <_< Idk there is a difference if the paparazzi uses pictures or stuff from his facebook than having someone standing outside of your house and having someone take pictures off you. The same you going out to eat. He's being a normal 30 year old, and there is loads of other footballers that use twitter or facebook as much as Iker does and they don't get as followed or harassed as Iker and Sara does. There is a huge difference yes but if you know your relationship is the talk of Spain all the time and a lot people(the media/paps) want to make money out of your relationship the last thing you do is keep putting it out there. If he wants to dedicate a song to Sara or say to her you were really cute when you were younger with your sister she's right there!? Tell her . Facebook is just not the place but that's his choice and he needs to either stop putting his personal stuff out there or put up and shut up. Yes there are a lot of players who use the social networks but they are not Iker Casillas playing for one of the richest and biggest clubs in world football, European and World football champion. His put his relationship out there from the moment he kissed her on tv for the world to see and he has to deal with it. She did nothing wrong just her job but he mixed professional and personal he gave the media/press what they wanted. Idk i feel like he wants to be normal as possible but there is some big names on twitter! RVP is one of them and he is playing for a well known team (they may not be Man Utd) but he is playing on a well known team and has loads of money as well. He doesn't get followed as much as Iker. And Kaka and his wife as well and they are both very loving on twitter and facebook. I just think the media likes Iker more than said people. Personally I would like to show my affection too and maybe some people can stop being so harsh on Sara. There is still people out there that say she is only with him for money and ect. So maybe he wants people to show that he is in love. And Love does strange things to people. But I wouldn't want people stalking me out in front of my house every day either. but omg Ily <3 you posted more pictures today and that old picture is so cute!!! Kaka and his wife do not generate the buzz and media attention that Iker and Sara generate, he should just be careful with the social networking sites and his private life. He doesn't want to be harrassed by the press when his trying to go on about his daily life but when everyone talks about the song you posted to your girlfriend the paparazzi will want a photo of you saying something like "Iker & Sara out for dinner after his loving dedication to her on twitter/facebook this week". In that sense he feeds the media, Sara I think is more timid about showing her affections cause she's a very shy girl and the shyness looks like coldness to certain people.
