  2. The showdown between the best clubs from Europe and the southern hemisphere that many fans have been yearning for might not be that far away. Crusaders v Toulouse? Bulls v Liecester? Leinster v Reds? Supporters from both sides of the equator have long dreamed of the day when we would be treated to a clash between the Heineken Cup and Super Rugby champions. Well, Premiership Rugby chief executive Mark McCafferty believes a world club championship could be introduced within the next five years. Of course the biggest hurdle in setting up such an event is the current structure of the opposing seasons but McCafferty believes a North v South showdown is almost an inevitability. "The national championship is something to treasure and Europe is very successful," he said. "Ideally we would like to bolt on top of that an international club event, something that answers the question 'who is top dog?' "Is it the Crusaders? Is it the Bulls? Is it Toulouse, Leinster or Saracens? "That would be such a compelling event that sooner or later it will have to happen because people would love to see it. "Club rugby at its best now is every bit as entertaining and enthralling, if not more so, than international rugby. "Season structure is the biggest issue. We have had plenty of indications from our partners and from a TV point of view it would work. "It won't happen before 2015, before the World Cup. There is a possibility it might happen after 2015. It is a matter of the stars coming into alignment to make something possible." PR

  14. Danny Care will take no part in the Six Nations after two drink-related arrests. The RFU have labelled Care's behaviour as 'deeply disappointing'. The scrum-half was arrested for being drunk and disorderly on December 10 and in the early hours of New Year's Day was pulled over by police and found to have a blood-alcohol level that is believed to have been twice the legal limit. On form alone, the Harlequins man would be a shoe-in for a place in the squad but after Quins conducted an internal investigation in conjunction with England's caretaker coach, Stuart Lancaster, it was decided that Care would be fined by his club and not considered for England selection. "I have met Danny and told him that he will not be considered for selection for the Senior or Saxons Elite Player Squads that are due to be announced on the 11th January for the forthcoming Six Nations campaign," said Lancaster. "This is his second arrest in three weeks for alcohol related offences and it is completely unacceptable. We will monitor his progress from this event through Harlequins and we have every confidence in the club to support him in the right way. At such a time that we feel he can be trusted to behave appropriately on and off the field then he will be reconsidered for selection, but this will not be until the conclusion of the Six Nations as a minimum." Care, who will plead guilty on January 16 when he appears in court to face a charge of driving while under the influence of alcohol, admitted he had made a grievous error and accepted responsibility for both his actions and the sanctions handed down. "I do accept that I made a very bad decision on the evening in question and need to take the punishment that the courts hand out. I have decided not to contest the charge as I want to bring this to a close swiftly rather than have it hanging over my head for a year or more," said the 25-year-old. "I would stress though that at no time did I think I had drunk enough to be over the legal limit. However I should not have got into the car and have to accept the consequences of that action. "I am devastated not to be selected for the Elite Player Squad for the Six Nations as I felt I had been playing near the top of my game with Quins. However I wish the team, and the other number 9s who come in to play the best of luck as playing for your country is the highest honour in the game and I will miss it hugely. It's now up to me to get my head down, keep playing well and learn from my actions. "Quins and Stuart have been very supportive and I totally accept their sanctions. I do understand the need for England players to be role models in the game and have tried to live up to that at all times, but have made a couple of stupid decisions in the past weeks. I can only hope for the chance in the future to prove those decisions were the exception not the rule. I am devastated because my actions have let so many people down." Care has been fined £10 000 by Harlequins and will be required to work on the club's inner city coaching programme until the end of pre-season 2012-13. He will also be provided with support and education around alcohol awareness.
