  1. Raúl to AS "We want to maintain the same spirit we had at the end of the League" Raúl González Blanco is about to begin his 11th season with Real Madrid. The captain is as excited as ever after returning from his holiday, and he has every intention of keeping up the winning attitude that drove Real Madrid to the League title last season. Raúl will be the right hand man of Bernd Schuster, who defined the player as “a symbol of Real Madrid.” In his last hours of summer vacation, Real Madrid captain Raúl González spoke to Spanish sports daily AS about how he feels about the 2007/08 season. He is looking forward to getting another year in the Real Madrid shirt underway. “I am returning to work just as always. I am as excited as ever. I just hope the team maintains the same spirit we had at the end of the League. If we do, we'll have a chance to win all the titles we have in play,” declared Raúl. It will be a long season that will be fought on four fronts: the Spanish Super Cup, the League, the Champions League, and the King's Cup. The captain is aspiring to all of them, and that's why he is “returning with high hopes. We want to reclaim the League and win as many titles as possible.” Raúl and company will all be back at Real Madrid City this afternoon, and there will be four new faces – Dudek, Metzelder, Saviola, and Pepe- in the dressing room and a new coach, Bernd Schuster managing the squad, but the captian promised that “we're all going to do our best from day one.”

Miguel Torres to AS "Schuster will bring in ideas the best represent Real Madrid" One week ago, Miguel Torres extended his contract with Real Madrid through 2012. Excited about the start of the upcoming season, the defender is very optimistic about the team's chances of winning another title, and it's exactly what he told Spanish sports daily AS. How did you feel after signing your First Team contract through 2012? It was the most important moment of my life because, although I have played a lot for the First Team, I still considered myself a youth team player. Everything is different now, but I'm not going to ease up being that I still have to prove myself. I'm still bothered about missing the last game of the season to injury, but I'm better now. Your life changed in a matter of months. How have you taken it? Boy has it changed. I didn't know if I would even be staying on with Madrid at the start of last season. I'm here now thanks to the chance Míchel gave me and I'm still living the dream. I owe so much to him and Capello. What made you stay with the Club and not leave like Mata and Valero did? It's all I was thinking about. It was always a dream I had since joing the Club when I was eight. If I do leave some day, I hope it's because I have already done everything I can, and not because they don't want me anymore or because I am interested in pursuing other goals. Do you think there is more reliance on the youth system is now? Yes. They really mean it. Soldado's return is all the proof you need. Granero has also joined the First Team. How does Capello's departure influence you being that he was your biggest proponent? This is uncharted territory for me. Schuster is here now with a different way of seeing football. I do have one lasting hope though: he has faith in youth players. I hope I can play for him. He will bring in ideas the best represent Real Madrid. Do Metzelder and Pepe make you nervous? The competition has been stepped up. We have a great team, but we're all starting from scratch. Whoever deserves it most will play. Where do you think you have a better chance of playing? I'm still developing as a player and am versatile. I'll play wherever I am told to. Are you worried about the players Barça have signed? No, although they are among the best. We may have won the title last season, but I want more this year with the new players the Club has brought in. What are your goals for the upcoming season? I want Schuster to have faith in me, to win the League again, and to win another title. I would also like to debut with the Spanish national team. It's been my dream since I was a little kid.

  17. Coulthard gets married in 2008 Red Bull Racing Team driver, David Coulthard, the playboy of F1, is getting married with his Belgian fiancée, Karen Minier. The Scotsman declared this weekend that he and Karen will get married in March 2008, somewhere in the Caribbean. He said "She's experienced a lot of what life has to offer. And she's a great judge of character, what is why she is engaged to me. Faithfulness is not something that has featured in my values [but] i've always had a romantic vision of marriage and children at some stage of my life. Time will tell how long it lasts. It might be a few years, might be a lifetime. What I do know is that I don't want to let her down - and that was never a worry in the past."

REYES HOPING FOR ROBBEN LINK-UP AT MADRID Jose Antonio Reyes is confident there is room for both him and Arjen Robben at Real Madrid next season. Reyes is keen to secure a permanent switch to Madrid having spent last season on loan at the Bernabeu from Arsenal. However, Madrid are being closely linked with a move for Chelsea wideman Robben - who plays a similar role to Reyes - and it could be that only one of the two wingers will be drafted in this summer. Reyes, though, is adamant that they would be able to play in the same team. "He (Robben) is a great player. I have played against him on various occasions in England," said Reyes. "He has a lot of speed, and seems almost impossible to stop when he is in full flow. He also has a good left foot. "I do not want to say that the two of us are not compatible. I have already shown that I can also be dangerous on the right." Although his two goals against Real Mallorca on the final day of the season proved crucial in helping Madrid win their first Primera Liga title since 2003, Reyes' did not have the best of campaigns and often struggled to tie down a first-team berth. However, the 23-year-old former Sevilla man is keen to return to the club and show what he can really do next season. "Madrid are building a great team and I want to be part of it," he said in Spanish newspaper AS. "There remain things that I want to show at Madrid. I am a better player than they have seen. "I am very relaxed (about the future). I am trying to rest. I know what is happening through my representatives. I cannot do anything other than wait."

Reyes waits on Real move Jose Antonio Reyes is waiting and hoping to make a permanent move to Real Madrid. The Spanish midfielder spent last season on loan at The Bernabeu from Arsenal and is desperate to join the Liga champions. Arsene Wenger has admitted Reyes is likely to leave The Gunners with the former Sevilla ace unhappy with life in England. Reyes wants to remain with Real and is now waiting for positive news to arrive from his representatives in the coming days. "I have made it clear to Wenger that I want to continue wearing the Real Madrid shirt," he told AS. "I know what is happening through my representatives, now all that is left is to just hope."

I Can Play With Robben - Reyes José Antonio Reyes is enduring an anxious wait to see if Madrid will make his loan move permanent, but he is leaving everything in the hands of his agent. The Spanish forward has made it clear that he does not want to return to Arsenal and admits that he is desperate to move to the Bernabéu. Despite Madrid's interest in Chelsea's Arjen Robben, Reyes believes that the pair of them could play in the same team if he switched wings. "We are not incompatible," he explained. "I have already proved that I can also play well down the right too." Reyes did not enjoy life in England during his time at Arsenal and has told manager Arsène Wenger in no uncertain terms that he wants to leave. "Well, I have made it clear to Mr Wenger that want to continue at Real Madrid," he continued. "The rest is not in my hands. It is now down to Madrid and Arsenal. "I am remaining calm and trying to rest. "I am keeping up with events through my representatives and just have to wait." As Madrid prepare to travel to their pre-season training camp in Irdning, Austria and Reyes hopes that he can jet out to join them. "That is what I want more than anything in the world right now," he added. "I have already done everything I can."

"The Club is making good signings, setting good foundations for the future" Real Madrid's goalkeeper enjoys the last days of his holiday. He spoke to AS from Navalcruz in Ávila, where he has his Summer School. Three hundred kids have the chance of learning how to play football with him there. How's the summer going? Rather well. I rested a lot, but I have also done some charity work. I was in Sierra Leone opening some schools and I managed to visit the kids in my Summer Camp. I try to help in any way I can. The school here in Navalcruz is the fourth we open and we have just borught water and electricity to the place. I am very happy because I never thought we could pull it off. All this started a few years ago after a silly conversation. We didn't want to achieve much, but we have come a long way since then. How was your trip with the Club's Foundation to Sierra Leone? It was an unforgettable experience, truly incredible. We don't think much about how badly people live there. We are very privileged in this part of the world and being Real Madrid's goalkeeper gave me the chance of travelling there. It was sad to see it, but the experience was very enriching. I think I've helped to make kids there slightly happier. The world of football is truly crazy. I never imagined children from villages in that country would recognise me. This was my first trip there and it won't be my last. Have you managed to disconnect from football during your holiday? Yes, I have. I haven't heard much about what's going on because I've been travelling quite a bit. I went to Cuba with my friends, where I watched the presentation of Schuster on the international version of RealmadridTV. I also heard about Fernando Torres' signing for Liverpool. You return to work in five days. Are you looking forward to going to Irdning? Not really, but I'm sure that I will be anxious to work again as soon as I rejoin the squad and start playing in official fixtures. I also have the challenge of qualifying for the 2008 Euro with Spain ahead of me. What do you think of Schuster? I don't know him personally. I used to watch him play for Real Madrid when I was a kid. Everyone says great things about him as a coach. He seems anxious to want to do great things at the Club, so we are all very glad he's joined us. All of us Madridistas want the Club to be at the top of its game again, as it deserves. We players are going to help him make things work out. Do you think Real Madrid will regain their good style with Schuster? Will the team go back to playing beautifully, attacking down the wings and being creative? Schuster has made his mark on all the other teams he's coached and Getafe are the best example of that. They played very good football last year. They never gave up, ending the League on a comfortable position on the table and qualifying for next season's UEFA Cup. They couldn't have done better than that and now we will have to do even better because this Club is much more demanding. He said during his presentation that Raúl would have to help the team out from the very start... We will all have to do that. We want to win the League again and to fight hard for the Champions League title. We will all work hard from day one to achieve our goals. Metzelder and Pepe pointed you out as a clear example of how to triumph at Real Madrid. What do you think of that? I am very grateful to them. It's always nice to have quality players thinking about you. I am sure they will adapt to the team very quickly. Both have arrived to strengthen the team's defence. They are very tall, just like Schuster likes his defenders to be. The Club is doing a good job at strengtheniing the team. It has made very good signings. It is setting good foundations for the future, which is the most important thing. We will do the rest. Do you think 30 million euros for Pepe is too much money? Not if they believe he is the ideal player to have. It has spent that money for a reason. He is a very young player, capable of performing brilliantly. We'll have to wait and see how he plays. Dudek will be signed as the team's new goalkeeper. He doesn't seem to mind being the team's second keeper, knowing he will only play occasionally. I am very happy with having reinforcements in any position and I believe Dudek and I will be in healthy competition anyway because no one has earned a position indefinitely on this team. I can't be hipocritical and believe that I will play in every game form the very start. On the contrary, I have to earn that spot. It seems you learned from when you stopped being a starter in 2002. That helped me mature as a player. I am experienced enough to know that one isn't a starter always. I had to earn my spot, competing with keepers such as Illgner, Bizarri, César and Diego López. It would be excessive for me to think that I have earned the right to be a starter all the time. The best thing of the Copa America is that Robinho has given signs of being the star player of the League next season. I am delighted with how he has performed. He is my teammate and I am very happy for him. He has played perfectly in the Copa and that is good for Real Madrid. I'm sure we will notice the difference. Do you believe Saviola to be a good signing? Of course. The Club has been very clever once again. He was free from Barcelona, he is young and has exceptional talent. He is very fast and I am sure he will adapt to the team very quickly. There will be a lot of competition on the squad, but we need that. We needed decisive players and Saviola is just that: he is a young and very driven player. The fact that he comes from Barcelona proves he's got it all. Do you think Cesc and Kaká will ever play for Real Madrid? I honestly don't know. It is the talk of every summer. Cesc and I are teammates when we play for Spain. I wish both would join Real Madrid at some point. Will you miss Beckham and Roberto Carlos? Naturally, they were with us many years, especially Roberto. But, someday, I will have to leave too. That's life. We wished them all the best when they left and we will keep an eye on them. Is it even more dermanding to play on the team now that you've won the League? This will be a strange year. We won the title with faith, drive, great efforts and by never giving up. I think that's going to take its toll on us next season, especially because most people believe we didn't deserve to win. I think we deserved it because we made a great effort. We will try to play brilliantly next season in order to prove that the true Real Madrid are back. You just said you found out Fernando Torres was leaving Atletico Madrid when you were in Cuba. Were you surprised by this? Yes, I was, but I know Fernando and I know how difficult it's been for him to take this step. He didn't want to leave Atletico, but in the case of having to do so, he would only play for a team outside Spain to avoid hurting Atletico in any way. I'm sure he must be hurt, but I know he will do well. You'll still see him when you both play for Spain... Yes. I'll see him in September and we may even face each other in the Champions League. What do you think of Barcelona's signings? They are working according to plan. Barcelona will be very strong next year. We needed to win something last season and taking the league title made us immensely happy. We needed this in order to do something great in the future. Barcelona are in need of titles now I was asking you about their signings... Yes, yes. It will be wonderful to see Henry playing in Spain; I'm sure he will do very well in the League. We've always had a bittersweet feeling whenever we've faced him. I hope this changes in the Spanish competition. What will you do in the next few days? I will go to Thailand and spend the last days of my holiday in Madrid.

"The Champions League is now my first priority" In an interview published by Italian sports daily “La Gazzetta dello Sport”, Fabio Cannavaro spoke about his future with Real Madrid. He stated that he is happy being a Madridista after having completed a season that man thought was destined for failure, but in reality ended with the League title. He realises that a position in the starting eleven will be much more difficult to obtain with the arrivals of Pepe and Metzelder, and he dismissed the rumours of his possible departure for another club, although he hasn't closed any doors either. He feels happy having won a League title that many, with the exception of Madridistas, thought was a lost cause, saying “It was sensational, and even more so after everything that was said about this team.” And he is happy living in Spain, although he does feel a little homesick for Italy. “Of course I miss Italy, my friends, and my family, but right now I play for Real Madrid. I really like this city. It's beautiful. And I also play for the most important club in the world. I don't think I can ask for much more.” The arrival of new players -Pepe and Metzelder- makes the starting centre-back position that much more valuable. Cannavaro understands that the competition will be fierce and that someone will have to watch from the bench. “I'll turn 34 during the season and I won't be able to play 70 matches at full throttle. It will be a long season and I will be able to play 40 at a demanding level,” he told the paper. The defender knows there are rumours that he may join other European clubs like his former team Juventus, but he denies any contact. “They are looking for a centre-back to strengthen the team, but there were never any negotiations in the works.” Would he move back to Turin? “I played for Juve for many years and won two Leagues there that no one can take away from me. I don't have any unkind words for them, but rather the opposite. I do have two more years on my contract with my team, so if someone wants me to return they should first speak with Real Madrid. That said, I wouldn't have a problem returning to Juve.” Another team, according to rumours, that want to do with his services is Mourinho's Chelsea. “It's an honour because he is a coach with a winning attitude. It seems like a lot of teams want me,” and in respect to the Italian team who does, Cannavaro pointed out that “it's no secret that I would like to hang up my boots in Naples. However, they have a project and a budget when it comes to signing players, and right now it's not feasible.” Cannavaro believes next year will be a head-to-head battle between Real Madrid and Barcelona. “At first glance Barcelona may appear to have the upper hand having signed players like Henry. But at the end of last season our confidence was soaring, and that's thanks to Capello. Nevertheless, Real Madrid also have to play good football now.” Regarding the difference between Spanish and Italian football, especially in defence, he stated that “in Spain the game is based a lot on one-on-one football. It's a lot harder to recover if they get by you. We have a more defencive mentality in Italy. We think more about crossing the pitch and covering ground. Coaches in Italy teach how to defend, while footballers in Spain play without fear and worry less about the defencive aspect. In the Bernabéu for example, they never substitute a forward for a defender.” If Cannavaro had to pick a title he would like to win this season, he didn't hesitate in saying that “the Champions League is now my first priority. What's more is that Madrid want to win their 10th.”
