David Coulthard
Coulthard: Ferrari, McLaren clearly ahead Ferrari and McLaren have a clear lead at the head of the Formula One field judging by the results of early testing, claims Red Bull Racing's David Coulthard. Although teams like Scuderia Toro Rosso and Red Bull Racing have been fastest overall on some days of pre-season testing, Coulthard thinks that the fight at the front is just between two teams. "I think they have an advantage, yes," Coulthard told autosport.com about Ferrari and McLaren's pace. "A big advantage. "I don't know why they are doing such a good job and why the rest are not doing one. We all work hard. "I think what it shows is that in F1 everyone has a wind tunnel and so on, but to make the car work on the track is so difficult. The car moves around on the circuit, and the driver does things like touch the kerbs, and that makes it hard." Coulthard feels that part of the explanation for McLaren and Ferrari's strong pace could be in the way their chassis works with the tyres. "For sure, some teams work more efficiently with these tyres in a certain window of temperature, and when it goes hot they struggle," he said. "It is possible the McLaren and the Ferraris just are working the tyre more. So they get more heat out of the tyre, and out of that they get the laptime."

The 36-year-old, set to begin his 15th season in Grand Prix, recently told US journalists he could see more Europeans being lured to the US series. But the Red Bull driver insists he has no plans to leave F1 anytime soon and said: "There is never any question about whether I am excited going into the first Grand Prix of the season. I'mcommitted to driving in F1 for the foreseeable future and beyond."

Kaká
Kaka & Pato Both Set To Miss Arsenal Clash AC Milan have been hit by a potential hammer blow, as it is looking increasingly likely that both Kaka and Alexandre Pato will miss the Champions League last 16 first leg clash with Arsenal. The Rossoneri travel to the Emirates Stadium in London two weeks today in arguably the tie of the round. However Milan are now facing the prospect of meeting the outstanding Premiership league-leaders with a huge injury crisis, particularly in the forward positions. Teenage wonderkid Pato has been instrumental in turning around Milan’s domestic season, however he picked up an ankle injury in Sunday’s 1-0 win at Fiorentina. According to the Corriere dello Sport, the game with Arsenal will come too soon for the Brazilian, but he should be back in time for the second leg at San Siro on March 4. As for Kaka, serious concerns are starting to build-up over the condition of his troublesome knee. It was reported in the Italian press yesterday that the European and World footballer of the year was suffering from chronic knee pain and may have to rest for four months to clear up the problem. Kaka’s spokesman Diogo Kotscho told Globesporte yesterday that the player will probably not be able to play against Arsenal. "Kakà had treated this knee pain with physiotherapy and anti-inflammatories,” said Kotscho. “It is not appropriate to intervene surgically, but he probably will not be fielded against Arsenal.” This news comes as a potential hammer blow to Milan’s chances against Arsenal, as Ronaldo and Filippo Inzaghi are also injury doubts, thus leaving Alberto Gilardino as the only senior forward available. Midfield bulldog Gennaro Gattuso is also out of the match in London, so the Rossoneri will have to count on all their famed European experience in order to come away with a positive result.

Iker Casillas
Casillas Defends Coach As Raúl Row Continues Iker Casillas has reiterated that he supports Luis Aragonés decision over whether Raúl González is in the Spain squad and point out that there are a lot of players not in the squad that could be. The Real Madrid keeper was reacting to continuing pressure from the likes of AS and Marca in support of Raúl's return to the national team and believes that the coach knows best. Spain are preparing to face France in a high profile friendly on Wednesday having qualified for Euro 2008 last year, but still the focus is being taken away from the game. "Personally, I have made my feelings known on several occasions. Raúl is my teammate and it would be great if he was in the squad, but the coach has to choose," Casillas said. "There are plenty of other players that have a chance that are not going as well. "I have to accept the decisions that are made and respect the coach." There has all been speculation about Aragonés own future as the trainer feels that there is a conspiracy out to pressure him into standing down before the championships start in the summer. "All the players here are with the coach," Casillas continued. "We have been behind him when things have been good and when things have been bad and he has been the same with us and has always supported the squad." Finally, Casillas looked ahead to Group C in Euro 2008 which has seen three of the tournament favourites placed in the same pot, but the keeper believes that there could be a shock. "It is a very difficult group with France, Italy and Holland in and you cannot rule out Romania causing a surprise," he suggested. "There are always teams that nobody thinks of, but in a game anything can happen."

Cannavaro & Zambrotta Call For Del Piero Return Fabio Cannavaro and Gianluca Zambrotta have put pressure on Azzurri Coach Roberto Donadoni to take Alessandro Del Piero to Euro 2008. The Golden Boy has not played for Italy since the European qualifier with France last September. The 33-year-old has been in stunning form for Juventus in the last couple of months and was expected to win a recall for tonight’s friendly with Portugal in Zurich. However he was surprisingly omitted from the 20-man squad, with Donadoni selecting Luca Toni, Antonio Di Natale, Fabio Quagliarella, Marco Borriello and Raffaele Palladino as his five forwards. Del Piero has refused to panic over the situation and reports suggest that he is still confident of winning his place back before the European Championships in June. He certainly has two high-profile supporters in the form of captain Fabio Cannavaro and full-back Gianluca Zambrotta. “Alex is a champion who can be very useful to the group,” stated Cannavaro. "Mister Donadoni has not yet made final decisions. But I hope that Alex will be at the European Championships. He is important for us," Zambrotta added. Donadoni is expected to play Palladino, Di Natale and Toni in a forward trident against Portugal. Probable Line-Up: Amelia; Oddo, Cannavaro, Barzagli, Zambrotta; Ambrosini, Pirlo, Perrotta; Palladino, Di Natale, Toni- Fabio Cannavaro
Cannavaro: Italian Mentality The Key Fabio Cannavaro insists that the mentality of the Italy team will make up for the long-list of injuries in tonight’s friendly with Portugal. The Azzurri go into the game at the Letzigrund Stadium in Switzerland without three key first team players in the form of Gianluigi Buffon, Marco Materazzi and Gennaro Gattuso. Franco Semioli has also been forced to pull out of the squad, thus leaving Italy with only 19 players available. However Cannavaro is not too worried by these absentees, and believes that Italy’s famed mental qualities will shine through. “It’s true that there are lots of injuries, but the mentality of this side can goes beyond that,” Il Capitano stressed. “Portugal are good at moving the ball around, but I think that we can impose ourselves on them.” Cannavaro also had some words of praise for Coach Roberto Donadoni, who had a disastrous start to the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign after taking over from Marcello Lippi. However after a draw with Lithuania and a defeat to France, Donadoni helped mastermind a run of nine wins and a draw from their remaining 10 games, as Italy topped the group above Les Bleus. “Donadoni has proven his quality already as it wasn’t easy to come in after we had just won the World Cup,” Cannavaro explained. “Now we are just thinking about having a great European Championships – it’s not about anything else.” Cannavaro will win his 114th cap for his country tonight. The 34-year-old is just 13 caps short of all-time record appearance maker Paolo Maldini.- Fabio Cannavaro
