the avatar movies appear to be variations of the story structure of 'dances with wolves' except designed to for global appeal which messes up the story. The movies are very violent but have no gore. The characters are simple enough for kids to understand but not complex enough for adults to enjoy. The avatars are directed towards kid enjoyment. the film's story is mainly aimed at holding a technological presentation optimized for imax/3d for higher margin ticket sales. The premiere example a good take on this type of movie is "The Last Samurai", which is probably the best one. This movie gives man-tears and it has a great supporting cast. IIRC it was rated R. Although today Japanese who know their history would quickly realize the film presents an westernized and super idealistic view of the samurai and not what they were historically (as imperial and corrupt). Also the trope of the white guy getting the hottest asian women is insulting in this day and age.
