Ruud van Nistelrooy will say farewell to the Bernabeu crowd before the start of the Real Madrid-Malaga match Realmadrid.com / Translation by Michael J. O'Donnell Ruud van Nistelrooy has become a true Real Madrid icon in the four seasons he's spent at the Club. Now that his departure for Hamburg has been confirmed, Madridistas will have a chance to say goodbye before the start of Sunday's 21:00 CET Real Madrid-Malaga match. Van Nistelrooy may leave Real Madrid, but the Club's followers will always remember him. During his time on the team, the striker has won a Pichichi Trophy and two league titles, scoring 64 goals in 97 official games. Ruud earned the fourth best goal-scoring average in the history of the Club: 0.67 strikes per game. Van NIstelrooy's arrival meant goals right from the very start. The striker netted three against Levante on Matchday 2 of the 2006/07 campaign. That same season, he went on to score four strikes in Pamplona against Osasuna and two at Camp Nou against Barcelona; the latter two helped the team turn the league table around and end up winning the title. Ruud scored ten goals in the last ten games of the season in La Liga that year; Real Madrid fans will always remember the two he tallied in Zaragoza, giving the team a chance to win the title against Mallorca the following week in the final game of the campaign, which it did. Ruud became the league's Pichichi thanks to his 25 goals in the 2006/07 season and was just one strike shy of winning the Golden Boot. Van Nistelrooy became a true icon in just one year and he went on to net 16 more strikes the following campaign. A serious and untimely injury kept him off the pitch for eight months at the start of his third season at the Club. He came back against Xerez in the present season, but he was injured again during the match just as he scored a goal. Ruud and the fans will have a chance to say goodbye before Sunday's match against Malaga. Interesting facts - Established a new record for Real Madrid goals away from home in one season of La Liga (17). The record had previously been held by Puskas (16 goals, 1962/1963) and Hugo Sanchez (16 goals, 1988/1989). - He is the player to take the most points for Real Madrid in one single league season (25 points, 2006/2007). - Scored in 7 consecutive games (this hadn't been achieved since the 1960s). - Top scorer in three different leagues: La Liga, Premier League and Eredivisie. - Third all-time Real Madrid top scorer in one season of La Liga (25 goals, 2006/07). Only Di Stefano (27 goals, 1953/1954) and Ivan Zamorano (26 goals, 1992/1993) rank above him. - FIFA chose him as one of the 125 best football players alive. Honours 2 Spanish league (Real Madrid: 06/07, 07/08) 2 Dutch leagues (PSV Eindhoven: 99/00, 00/01) 1 Premier League (Manchester United: 02/03) 1 FA Cup (Manchester United: 03/04) 1 Spanish Super Cup (Real Madrid: 2008) 1 Dutch Super Cup (PSV Eindhoven: 1998) 1 FA Community Shield (Manchester United: 2003) La Liga top scorer (Real Madrid: 06/07) Premier League top scorer (Manchester United: 02/03) Eredivise top scorer (PSV Eindhoven: 98/99, 99/00) Champions League top scorer (Manchester United: 02/03, 04/05)

"I am improving, as is the team" Realmadrid.com In an interview with Realmadrid.com, Xabi Alonso briefly analyzed how the team is playing and what it must do to continue improving. If you play well does Madrid play well? No. If Madrid play well then I probably play well. I think we all need one another. This is a team sport, so we need everyone to do well. Has the Bernabeu seen the best version of you? I think I have played an important rold and I am happy, but I am still adjusting. I am improving, as is the team. I feel more comfortable each day. The team is attacking and defending better. The more balanced we are the better. What about the best version of Kaka? There will always be comparisons with the past and many of us have room for improvement. Does Cristiano Ronaldo still have something to prove? He can do much more and I am sure he will. Does the team need to play smarter football? In my position I have to read the game well, understand what the team needs, provide balance, organize as much as possible and communicate with teammates. Does that require keeping a cooler head than the rest of the team? Sometimes, but there are others when tempers can flare. But you do need to have some perspective, distance yourself and try to read the game. The team is improving and now tends to over open spaces better. I think we cover a lot of ground and open spaces are filling up. We know we have a player for every position, the balance and defensive-offensive transition is working and we are pressuring in attack, which allows us to steal more balls, play closer to our opponents’ goal and control matches. Earlier on it was to and fro and we didn’t dictate the tempo, but we are doing better. Do you prefer touch football or a more direct game? I like to combine the two and I believe there is a time for everything. Sometimes you have to slow the game down and in others you see open spaces that make you play vertical football with intensity and aggressiveness. The better a team can adopt both formats the better off it will be. Do you think the perfect play consists of 30 passes and a goal or one long pass and the ball in the back of the net? They are both perfect as long as they result in a goal. Is it easier for you to open the game up along the right wing or the left? I try both because oftentimes I don’t have a choice and I need to make a quick decision. I am right-footed but I try to use my left as well. Lass says he is the workhorse and that you pass and clear the ball. I sometimes put on the war paint as well and battle for the ball. Lass is a great player and I think we do well together. Would you like more chances to shoot on goal? It depends on where I play. If I play in a more advanced position I have more chances, but sometimes I have to play my position more and cover spaces. We all like to score. Let’s see if my first goal comes soon. Another task on the list was ball possession. Possession is very important, but you then need to know what to do with the ball. Having the ball without an objective is futile, but for a team to control a match it needs to have the ball and the ability to knock defenses off balance by risking a little more. A victory against Malaga would give you a perfect home record in the first half of the season. Winning at home and making other teams think how hard it is to win here is crucial. We had some good games on the road but lately we have had a little trouble, which is what we probably have to work and improve on. Having already visited some of the league’s most hostile stadiums, will this second half of the season be a little easier? Ideally we would like to remain undefeated at home and win many matches, so that may be the case at first glance. But once the season comes close to ending teams are in desperate need of points, whether it’s in La Liga or the Champions League, things can get quite complicated. What concerns you most about Malaga? They have played well recently. I think they have gone nine straight matches without losing. They are no longer in the relegation zone and will want to continue their climb. We need to respect them. Casillas says winning La Liga is more feasible, but in six matches you could be in the Champions League final. We have chances in both competitions, but we have to play very well. We have strong opponents in La Liga like Barcelona who rarely lose, which means we have to win a lot of matches. In the Champions League we know that anything can happen and that we cannot afford one bad performance. Perhaps we will make it to the final in the Bernabeu if we play six great games. Are the five points to be concerned about or to react to? We prefer not to be down by so many. Last week didn’t bode well because we lost and Barcelona won, but there are many points still up for grabs and we cannot be thinking about the five points. We need to take one game at a time and hope that they slip up at some point. One of the keys to this team is the depth. Kaka and Pepe get hurt and Van der Vaart and Garay step up; Higuain is injured and Benzema and Raul are there to fill in… Very important. The coach knows how to manage the situation and we haven’t been affected by the various injuries, which will help down the road in both competitions. At what capacity percentage wise is Real Madrid playing right now? This isn’t match, but I think there is room for improvement.

Ramos: It's unfair to Ron and Kaka Sergio Ramos has defended Real Madrid team-mates Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka after the club’s recent defeat to Athletic Bilbao. Ramos added that Bilbao keeper Gorka Iraizoz had a hand in denying Los Merengues in their 1-0 defeat last weekend. "I always said that when Madrid win, it wasn't just because of Ronaldo, Kaka or another, and when you lose it is not fair to blame the failures on these people alone," Ramos told Marca in an interview. "I do not blame them for anything, we gave everything we had, the difference was marginal, which is unfortunate," Ramos added. "We must not forget about Iraizoz, who was very successful." The Spain international also warned his Los Blancos team-mates that another slip-up would leave them out of the title race as Real are now five points adrift, behind Barcelona at the summit of La Liga. "When there is a five point difference you have to be much more careful, a bigger lead would be important because the leader has room to fail slightly. "But I repeat, there are lots of games remaining and we will not give up."

Cristiano Ronaldo: The goals will come Cristiano Ronaldo is unconcerned about not yet getting off the mark in 2010, insisting the goals will soon come. Ronaldo enjoyed a flying start to his Real Madrid career, scoring nine times in seven matches following his world-record £80million move from Manchester United last summer before suffering an ankle injury against Marseille in September. That injury kept the Portugal international sidelined for around two months, but he was back on the goal trail soon enough with four goals in five appearances following his comeback. However, the 24-year-old has not been able to find the back of the net since the winter break, going scoreless in the games against Osasuna, Real Mallorca and Athletic Bilbao - from which Madrid have only picked up four points. Ronaldo is taking it in his stride though, saying: "I`m not worried about not having scored. These things will come naturally because I`m working the same as I always do. I`m not getting worked about it, I`m sure the goals are going to come." Ronaldo and his Madrid team-mates are currently in Albania for a friendly match against KS Gramozi Erseke this evening. Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini named a strong squad for the trip, with the only absentees being the injured Pepe, Gonzalo Higuain, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rafael van der Vaart, and Mahamadou Diarra, who has just returned from African Nations Cup duty. Madrid, who were able to travel to Albania for tonight`s match due to their elimination from their Copa del Rey earlier this season, are back in league action on Sunday when they host Malaga.

Higuain blow for Real Madrid Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain will be absent for nearly a month, the Primera Division side have confirmed. Higuain has been in outstanding form this season and put in another impressive performance at the weekend, scoring one goal and setting up the other as Madrid beat Mallorca 2-0. The 22-year-old played the full 90 minutes on Sunday night but tests today revealed he has sustained a left foot injury that will sideline him for around three weeks. Higuain's injury comes as a big blow to Madrid, with the youngster having scored 11 goals in his last 10 matches. It should see more playing time given to Karim Benzema, who yesterday admitted to feeling somewhat frustrated with his current role as substitute at the Spanish giants. Having already been knocked out of the Copa del Rey before Christmas, Madrid only have three more games in January, facing Athletic Bilbao and Deportivo La Coruna away, as well as hosting Malaga. Madrid, who will also be without injured midfielder Rafael van der Vaart, are two points behind leaders Barcelona at the top of the Primera Division standings.

Guti wants to retire at Real Madrid Guti has declared his intention of gaining back his first team spot, after spending time on the sidelines pondering about his career. The veteran playmaker, who hasn't featured for Real in a couple of months before the team's latest game against Mallorca, told Marca in an interview: "Physically I feel fine now, but I spent two months not able to play." Guti's time spent on recovery and his recent lack of first-team football has, coincidentally, been in sync with his well-publicised bustup with Manuel Pellegrini during Los Merengues' Copa del Rey upset against Alcorcon. However, Guti has asserted that he is ready to challenge for his place and both him and Raul will do their best to get back in the first XI. "We are aware that every day we have to work harder to take minutes," he said. Having spent his entire playing career at the Bernabeu, Guti added that he had "not received any offers to leave Madrid in the winter market," and he does "not plan to leave because I want to retire at Real Madrid." Guti did reveal his excitement at the reported transfer of Racing starlet Sergio Canales. "Canales is one player with a lot of potential, who has shown he is cold-blooded [in front of goal]."
  16. Real Madrid 2-0 Real Mallorca Gonzalo Higuain scored one and made the other as Real Madrid kept the pressure on Barcelona in the La Liga title race. They cruised to a 2-0 victory over fellow high-fliers Real Mallorca at a snow-covered Bernabeu. In-form striker Higuain netted the opener and then set up the second for Esteban Granero as Madrid made it nine wins from nine at home this season. It was Madrid's 13th Primera Division win of the season. Mallorca came into the match boasting an impressive recent record on the Bernabeu, having won here five times in league and cup in the last decade, while they were also began the weekend in fourth place in La Liga following a superb start to the season. However, the reason Mallorca are so high is almost exclusively down to their perfect home record as they have won just once away, and Gregorio Manzano's men were up against it today after falling behind after eight minutes. Higuain picked the ball up on the right of the area before cutting inside and curling an unstoppable left-footed shot into the far top corner for his 11th league goal in his last 10 matches. Manuel Pellegrini's side were unable to build on the early goal in the remainder of the first half despite creating a number of decent openings. Kaka, making his first appearance since November after recovering from injury, fired over with only Dudu Aouate to beat following a superb one-two with Cristiano Ronaldo, who himself then missed a good chance at the far post. Ronaldo also blazed a free-kick over from the edge of the box after Kaka had been scythed down. Mallorca were not without threat either, and Gonzalo Castro headed a good chance wide just a minute after Higuain's goal. Mario Suarez also went close just before half-time with a powerful header, but it was straight at Iker Casillas. Granero made it 2-0 four minutes into the second period. Higuain created the chance with a good turn and cross to the far post and Granero netted with a left-footed volley from a tight angle. After that it was all Madrid and the only surprise was that they failed to add to their goal tally after spending almost the entire period camped in their opponents' half. In the 15 minutes after Granero's goal alone Madrid had five decent efforts, with Ronaldo, Kaka, Granero and Higuain (twice) all threatening. Aouate denied Madrid on three of those occasions, with the pick of the bunch being a remarkable one-handed block to keep out Granero's piledriver. Mallorca were finding it hard to cause any problems going forward, although Casillas needed to throw himself in harm's way as Alhassane Keita flung himself at a teasing low cross. Casillas came off worse as the two players collided, but he was able to carry on after some treatment while Keita himself picked up a yellow card for his troubles. Madrid were unable to add a third goal to their tally in the closing stages, with Ronaldo putting their clearest chance over, but it was already mission accomplished.

Maldini: Ramos will be my heir Paolo Maldini insists that Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has what it takes to succeed him as the world’s best stopper. Maldini, who hung up his boots after a legendary career with AC Milan, believes Ramos can evolve to be the best. "My heir will be Sergio Ramos," Maldini told Marca. "He is young and has everything to become my heir. He is quick, powerful and has technique. He is young and has plenty of time ahead of him." Maldini's endorsement will probably be music to Ramos' ears, and the Italian legend had some advice for the versatile defender. "He is part of a great club in Real Madrid. My advice to him will be to play in the middle of defence like I did. The secret is to train hard," concluded Maldini.

Real Madrid to bid for Fabregas Florentino Perez and Jorge Valdano have had discussions about making a £43 million offer for Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas. The Sun reports that Barcelona are considering a £40m bid in the summer, but Los Merengues are ready to prevent the deal from happening by sweetening their offer with £25m-rated striker Gonzalo Higuain. "The price demanded is £43m and that is what we are basing our calculations on," a Real insider told The Sun. "This is 'Operation Cesc', which we hope will prove a blow to Barcelona." La Blaugrana president Joan Laporta has in the past publically stated that he would like to bring Fabregas 'home' to Barcelona

Van Nistelrooy to sign for Liverpool Liverpool look certain to swoop for Ruud van Nistelrooy in a desperate bid to resurrect the club's fortunes. With Liverpool currently eighth in the Barclays Premier League, four places and some five points off a lucrative Champions League spot, The Sun newspaper believes Anfield boss Rafa Benitez is prepared to gamble on the Real Madrid striker in a last ditch attempt to qualify for Europe's elite club competition. Sources in the Spanish media have reported that former Manchester United star van Nistelrooy, who harbours ambitions to play for Holland at this year's FIFA World Cup in South Africa this summer despite having officially retired from international football, has already been told he can leave Real as - with fellow forwards Karim Benzema, Raul and Gonzalo Higuain at the Bernabeu - he is no longer assured regular football. Bringing the 33-year-old to Merseyside would represent a major risk for Benitez. However, with the Spaniard convinced that van Nistelrooy is the perfect strike partner for Anfield favourite Fernando Torres, it is now down to the Dutchman to convince his potential employers that he is over recent injury problems and that he still has what it takes to shine in England. Liverpool are also thought to be monitoring the form of another Real Madrid Dutch import - Rafael van der Vaart. Until recently, it was believed he was surplus to requirements at Real, but he has since returned to action and, after impressing, observers believe Liverpool could now be tempted to offer the one-time Hamburg ace a loan deal until the end of the season.

Ronaldo is better than Messi - fact Spanish newspaper Marca has declared that Real Madrid ace Cristiano Ronaldo is a more complete player than Lionel Messi. Messi was recently crowned FIFA World Player of the Year thanks to his heroics last season with Barcelona, but the daily's comprehensive statistical study has revealed that Ronaldo is, in fact, the better of the two leading lights. Having studied the ability of both players in several categories, Marca declared that trying to separate the pair was as tough as "choosing between a mother or father". However the publication concluded that Messi's woes with Argentina were key to him finishing behind Ronaldo. The Marca hierarchy also praised Ronaldo, who signed for Real from Manchester United last summer in a world record transfer deal, saying: "Ronaldo gives you the feeling that he can perform to his best in any environment." Here's how Marca decided Ronaldo ruled the roost: Collective Game Cristiano Ronaldo 7 Messi 8 Individual Technique Cristiano Ronaldo 9 Messi 9 Physicality Cristiano Ronaldo 10 Messi 7 Pace Cristiano Ronaldo 9 Messi 8 Dribbling Cristiano Ronaldo 8 Messi 10 Shooting Cristiano Ronaldo 9 Messi 8 Passing Cristiano Ronaldo 9 Messi 9 Heading Cristiano Ronaldo 9 Messi 7 Leadership Cristiano Ronaldo 9 Messi 7 Free-kicks and Penalties Cristiano Ronaldo 9 Messi 7
  25. Ronaldo appeals to Real fans Cristiano Ronaldo has asked the Real Madrid fans to be more like those of Manchester United The Portugal international moved to Spain from Old Trafford for a world record fee over the summer. "We know that we have to entertain but sometimes it isn't possible," Ronaldo told Marca. "We always try but sometimes, when the team isn't playing well, the fans could give us more support. "The Manchester United fans, for example, were very intimidating for Liverpool and Manchester City. "I think if our supporters tried to do the same it would be a lot better for everyone and would give the players a big boost." Madrid's expensively-assembled team struggled to gel at the start of the season but now sit two points behind Primera Division leaders Barcelona after a run of six wins in seven games.
