MIRANDA KERR TELLS AD ALL ABOUT HER NEW FURNITURE LINE Plus, the model reveals what she does to make hotel rooms feel more like home By Elizabeth Quinn Brown This season, Miranda Kerr debuts her first collection for home. It’s chic, modern, and—much like the former Victoria’s Secret angel herself—heavenly. The collaboration between Kerr and Universal Furniture launches in October 2019 and is called LOVE. JOY. BLISS. The collection echoes the interior sensibilities that can be seen in the two homes Kerr shares with her husband, Evan Spiegel (CEO of Snap, the parent company of apps like Snapchat and Bitmoji), 8-year-old son Flynn (with ex-husband Orlando Bloom), and 15-month-old son Hart in Los Angeles, California. (Kerr and Spiegel are currently expecting their second child together.) It embraces clean and geometric lines and muted palettes, featuring pops of colors like blush pink and gold. Details include decorative hardware, luxe finishes, and plush fabrics. Kerr traces her passion for interior decoration to the crowded flats that she shared with other models when she was just starting her career. “The first one was in Japan, and there were two or three girls in each room,” she shares. “I tried to keep everything clean and tidy, maintaining a homey feel. I got curtains and I scrubbed the walls—and I would decorate with bonsai trees and fresh flowers. I thought that this would benefit the girls so that we could feel a little more at ease and tranquil. Home is about having that nurturing space that you can come back to and recharge in.” Below, Architectural Digest chats with the Australian-born sensation about her LOVE. JOY. BLISS. collection and what continues to inspire her when it comes to interiors. AD: How did this collaboration come to be? Miranda Kerr: I’ve always had a fascination with art and design, including furniture and homewares, so it’s been a desire of mine to collaborate and create a collection for some time. When Universal Furniture approached me, I thought, This is a great opportunity—and a great fit. They really understood my aesthetic. I’ve loved styling my apartments in New York and, now, my houses in Brentwood and Malibu. And so it was incredible when they approached me and asked if I would like to be involved. I said, "Yeah, sure. Here are my ideas." I had a whole concept with a vision board and they said, "Wow, this is amazing. No one’s ever come to the first meeting like this before!" AD: How would you describe the collection—with a few words? MK: I would describe it as functional, inspiring, and nurturing. I want the pieces to feel nurturing and intriguing. It’s so hard to narrow it down! AD: How involved were you in the creation process? MK: I’m particular when it comes to design and the specifics. If I’m going to do something, I’m going to give it my all. I’m not going to do something half-heartedly—I’m going to do it all the way. AD: How involved were you in the creation process? MK: I’m particular when it comes to design and the specifics. If I’m going to do something, I’m going to give it my all. I’m not going to do something half-heartedly—I’m going to do it all the way. AD: This isn’t your first collaboration. Before this, you’ve collaborated with brands like Royal Albert and Swarovski. What lessons have you learned from these? MK: It’s proven to me the importance of following my intuition. For example, when I was working with Swarovski, there were a few pieces that I was designing for them that they said wouldn’t resonate with their customers. I said, “Well, I feel really strongly about this and I think that it’s going to be a major hit.” It turned out to be the number one seller in the collection! What I’ve learned is that it’s really important to not doubt your own intuition and just go with it. Listen to other people's ideas and perspectives—but remain true to you. AD: How would you describe your own interiors and sense of style? MK: There are no rules. One of my favorite things to do in hotel rooms is move pieces of furniture. I’ll remove things, like pillows, and put them in the closet. I like to keep it simple. I put my crystals out and I light my candles. It doesn’t matter the space that I’m in: I like to make it mine and personalized with specific things like that. In larger spaces, like my homes, I’m particular when it comes to the placement of books and photo frames and crystals. I love learning about feng shui and the flow of energy in the home. Fortunately, Evan has really embraced my aesthetic, which is lucky for me. He has his opinions, but we really seem to like similar pieces. I think it’s because we both have an eye for detail—and an appreciation for art and design, and an appreciation for quality. AD: What details and elements are you drawn to—especially, when it comes to designing? MK: For me, my home is my sanctuary. It’s a place that needs to feel comfortable and inspiring and nurturing. I simply love being at home and entertaining. Each piece in this Universal Furniture collection is an extension of me, and I envision these pieces being a part of my home. I love neutral colors—with a pop of color here and there. I like there to be something interesting, whether it’s the shape or whether it’s the finish or the texture. For each of these pieces, there’s a personal touch. I just feel like that these pieces not only look aesthetically pleasing but put positive energy and warmth into the home. It had to be something that balances functionality and style with warmth. AD: Do you have a favorite piece in the collection? MK: I really love the glass and metal table with the geometric base. It’s round, which I really love, and I feel like it’s very versatile. I love the space that it creates. Because it’s a metal structure, it has the detail and the intricacy there. But with the clear top, it’s not too overbearing. I feel like it can fit into any size room. It’s timeless. I see furniture as an investment. AD: What inspires you when it comes to interior decoration? MK: I feel inspired by every place that I’ve traveled, including obvious places like Paris, New York, Morocco, Japan, China, and Australia. I feel it’s been incredible to be exposed to so many different cultures and so many different traditions. I feel like I’m a very tactile person. I love different fabrics and mixing elements, whether that’s in fashion or in the home. Our senses can be so soothed by the fabrics and textures around us, whether it’s what we’re wearing or what we’re interacting with in our environments. I’ve worked with some of the most creative people in the business, which has had a major influence on me. It’s a funny thing because I speak to my husband about this. I say, “Look, we’ve traveled and experienced some of the most beautiful places in the world and I can honestly say, with my hand on my heart, our home is the most aesthetically pleasing place.” It’s somewhere where I feel that everything is where I want it to be.
