Her first major stage role was opposite Geoffrey Rush in the 1993 play Oleanna, for which she won the Sydney Theatre Critics' Best Newcomer Award. She also appeared as Ophelia in an acclaimed 1994–95 Company B production of Hamlet. Blanchett appeared in the TV mini-series Heartland, the mini-series Bordertown, and in an episode of Police Rescue. She also appeared in the 1994 telemovie of Police Rescue and in the 50 minute drama Parklands (1996), which received a limited release in Australian cinemas.

Blanchett made her international film debut with a supporting role in 1997 film Paradise Road. Her first leading role, also in 1997, was in Oscar and Lucinda. She win an AFI Award as Supporting Actress in the same year for her role in Thank God He Met Lizzie.

Her first high-profile international role was as Elizabeth I of England in the 1998 movie Elizabeth, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She won a British Academy (BAFTA) Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama. The following year, Blanchett was nominated for another BAFTA Award for her supporting role in The Talented Mr. Ripley.

Already an acclaimed actress, Blanchett received a host of new fans when she appeared in The Lord of the Rings, which hold the record as the highest grossing film trilogy of all time. In 2004, she played in film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, yet again earning a nomination for BFCA award for Best Acting Ensemble.

In 2005, she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for playing Katharine Hepburn in Martin Scorsese's The Aviator.

In 2006, she starred in Babel and Notes on a Scandal. Blanchett received her third Academy Award nomination for her performance in the film.

In 2007, she won the Volpi Cup Best Actress Award at the Venice Film Festival and the Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe Award for portraying one of six incarnations of Bob Dylan in I'm Not There and also reprised her role as Elizabeth I in the sequel to Elizabeth entitled Elizabeth: the Golden Age. At the 80th Annual Academy Awards Blanchett received two Academy Award nominations including Best Actress for Elizabeth: the Golden Age and Best Supporting Actress for I'm Not There.

She next appeared on screen in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and will appear in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, at the end of 2007.

In 1993, she made a brief appearance in film Dazed and Confused, then had a minor role in ABC TV mini series named Murder in the Heartland. The following year, she appeared in Reality Bites, and the biopic film 8 Seconds. Zellweger's first main part in a movie came with the 1994 horror movie Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Her next movie was Love and a .45,. The performance earned her an Independent Spirit Award for Best Debut Performance. She subsequently moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting, winning roles in the films Empire Records and The Whole Wide World. Zellweger first became widely known to audiences around the world with her role in 1996's Jerry Maguire. Since then, Zellweger has won acclaim in roles such as One True Thing and in Nurse Betty. The role garnered the actress her first of three Golden Globe Awards.

In 2001, Zellweger gained the prized lead role as Bridget Jones in the British romantic comedy film Bridget Jones's Diary, a film that is based on the 1996 novel Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding. Her performance as Bridget received praise from critics. As a result of her considerable efforts to effect author Helen Fielding's character, Zellweger caught the attention of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and received her first Best Actress Academy Award nomination.

In 2002, she starred in White Oleander. The same year, she appeared in the critically-acclaimed musical film Chicago. The movie received an Academy Award for Best Picture, and Zellweger received positive reviews from the critics. As a result, she earned her second Academy Award nomination as Best Actress, as well as the Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe Award. In 2004, Zellweger finally received an Academy Award, this time as Best Supporting Actress in Cold Mountain. Zellweger has since starred in the sequel to Bridget Jones's Diary in Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, lent her voice to the DreamWorks animated features Shark Tale and Bee Movie, and starred in the 2005 film Cinderella Man.

2005 she also appeared in Miss Potter. In 2008, she starred in the period comedy Leatherheads.

StudioCanal and Alain Goldman's Legende are currently developing the next film entitled My Very Own Love Song. StudioCanal has confirmed that Renee Zellweger is attached to the project.

It has been confirmed that she will star in the feature film 'My One and Only', due for release in 2009.
