Roma in for Ruud awakening?

Real Madrid hitman Ruud van Nistelrooy could be in line for a loan move to AS Roma in the January transfer window.

Van Nistelrooy has declared that he is open to offers away from Real during the next transfer window to increase his chances of playing regular football and boost his chances of featuring for Holland in the 2010 World Cup.

The veteran striker is currently behind Raul, Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain in the Los Blancos attacking hierarchy, and a move to Italy could be on the cards.

Famous FIFA agent Mino Raiola has stated that a temporary stay with the Lupi is a strong possibility.

"Van Nistelrooy is finding little space at Real. His goal is the World Cup and he wants to persuade the Dutch coach to take him to South Africa. When big teams are involved, I never see problems with transfers," he told Radio Radio.

"If the player agrees, an operation is feasible. There would be a paid salary for only six months. However, I don't know the opinion of [coach Claudio] Ranieri and Roma."

Van Nistelrooy to sign for Liverpool

Liverpool look certain to swoop for Ruud van Nistelrooy in a desperate bid to resurrect the club's fortunes.

With Liverpool currently eighth in the Barclays Premier League, four places and some five points off a lucrative Champions League spot, The Sun newspaper believes Anfield boss Rafa Benitez is prepared to gamble on the Real Madrid striker in a last ditch attempt to qualify for Europe's elite club competition.

Sources in the Spanish media have reported that former Manchester United star van Nistelrooy, who harbours ambitions to play for Holland at this year's FIFA World Cup in South Africa this summer despite having officially retired from international football, has already been told he can leave Real as - with fellow forwards Karim Benzema, Raul and Gonzalo Higuain at the Bernabeu - he is no longer assured regular football.

Bringing the 33-year-old to Merseyside would represent a major risk for Benitez.

However, with the Spaniard convinced that van Nistelrooy is the perfect strike partner for Anfield favourite Fernando Torres, it is now down to the Dutchman to convince his potential employers that he is over recent injury problems and that he still has what it takes to shine in England.

Liverpool are also thought to be monitoring the form of another Real Madrid Dutch import - Rafael van der Vaart.

Until recently, it was believed he was surplus to requirements at Real, but he has since returned to action and, after impressing, observers believe Liverpool could now be tempted to offer the one-time Hamburg ace a loan deal until the end of the season.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will say farewell to the Bernabeu crowd before the start of the Real Madrid-Malaga match

Realmadrid.com / Translation by Michael J. O'Donnell

Ruud van Nistelrooy has become a true Real Madrid icon in the four seasons he's spent at the Club. Now that his departure for Hamburg has been confirmed, Madridistas will have a chance to say goodbye before the start of Sunday's 21:00 CET Real Madrid-Malaga match.

Van Nistelrooy may leave Real Madrid, but the Club's followers will always remember him. During his time on the team, the striker has won a Pichichi Trophy and two league titles, scoring 64 goals in 97 official games. Ruud earned the fourth best goal-scoring average in the history of the Club: 0.67 strikes per game.

Van NIstelrooy's arrival meant goals right from the very start. The striker netted three against Levante on Matchday 2 of the 2006/07 campaign. That same season, he went on to score four strikes in Pamplona against Osasuna and two at Camp Nou against Barcelona; the latter two helped the team turn the league table around and end up winning the title.

Ruud scored ten goals in the last ten games of the season in La Liga that year; Real Madrid fans will always remember the two he tallied in Zaragoza, giving the team a chance to win the title against Mallorca the following week in the final game of the campaign, which it did. Ruud became the league's Pichichi thanks to his 25 goals in the 2006/07 season and was just one strike shy of winning the Golden Boot.

Van Nistelrooy became a true icon in just one year and he went on to net 16 more strikes the following campaign. A serious and untimely injury kept him off the pitch for eight months at the start of his third season at the Club. He came back against Xerez in the present season, but he was injured again during the match just as he scored a goal. Ruud and the fans will have a chance to say goodbye before Sunday's match against Malaga.
