It's going to be at least 60/40 from me. - I generally never considered the gender as a thing until I got educated in it this past year. Histories about the rise of civilization rarely emphasize how the status of women (often influenced by religion or other heavy forces- such as the rise of agriculture and industrialization or birth control in the 1960s) can be a factor in grounding men and taking them away from their naturally creative, adventure, freedom seeking, selfish, and warlike impulses. By grounding men and weighing them down, they stabilize society and can be considered the civilizing force. In a way, ancient and medieval wars were instigated by free men (the Elite large scale property owners, aristocrats, etc.) . Certain organized religions have a grounding effect as well- such as Christianity. -The morale of the Third Reich was sustained by targeting powerful masculinity feelings in men- even while their world was crumbling around them. This is why Neo-nazis still exist and why the German army was the way it was- and why it is the most academically studied army of WW2 in the West. The legend will last until the next world war. -The Gender 'thing' can also be viewed though politics- eg. Why public support for the war in Iraq/Afganistan lasted as long as it did, etc. It is important to view the emotions generated along with the logic.
