Supermodel’s support credited with giving Livni a lift in Israel election

By Dion Nissenbaum / McClatchy Newspapers

JERUSALEM - They are calling it "The Refaeli Factor."

It appears that Israeli supermodel and 2009 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition cover girl Bar Refaeli’s 11th-hour endorsement of Tzipi Livni may have been the deciding factor in the race.

Sure, Refaeli didn’t actually endorse Livni in the illuminating Time Magazine interview.

And the 23-year-old didn’t actually vote for Livni herself because she is on a nonstop party tour to promote the SI Swimsuit Edition.

But the race was so close that Refaeli’s quasi-vote of confidence for the foreign minister and Kadima leader might have made the difference.

It is possible that other factors played a role in Livni’s apparent come-from-behind victory over Benjamin Netanyahu and Likud. (Let’s see if the still-to-be-counted soldier vote changes the outcome ...)

Netanyahu played defense down the stretch, refused to debate and reacted late to Livni’s surge.

The rise of Avigdor Lieberman drained right-wing support from Netanyahu and probably drove some left-leaning voters who were thinking of supporting smaller, more marginal parties to vote for Kadima.

Livni seemed to gain surprising traction in the end with an optimistic, Obama-esque appeal to voters best captured by her campaign poster: Believni.

You could hear echoes of Obama’s message in her election night speech about "hope" and optimism.

"I entered politics when there were camps that fought each other unrelentingly: the Land of Israel versus the peace camp," Livni told supporters. "And today I hear the words ’national camp’ once again, and I want to say in a clear voice: The Land of Israel does not belong to the right, just as peace does not belong to the left."

But, down the stretch, it may have been the swing Refaeli voters that turned the tide.

The impact of Refaeli’s endorsement is likely to be debated for years to come.

Candidates will soon be crafting new strategies for courting the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition Cover Girl vote.

Now all that is left to discuss is what Cabinet post Livni will give Refaeli ...

Sports Illustrated Raises The Bar

by Sharon Udasin

Move over, Tzipi Livni. Another prominent Israeli woman is getting a fair bit of international exposure this week.

As Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Edition 2009 hit newsstand on Monday, Israel’s image across the world became a whole lot sexier. Bar Refaeli, a 23-year-old Israeli model, graced the cover of this year’s issue, flashing her perfect curves and suntanned skin in a barely-there bikini on a Canouan Islands beachfront in The Grenadines.

Refaeli didn’t know she was selected until Monday, when her agent called her for an alleged audition, she told the Today Show. Instead, she got to fly across America on Monday afternoon in a plane emblazoned with her image.

“For five minutes I couldn’t speak,” she said on the show, noting, however, that she did

think that that the editors might just possibly pick this photo. “That specific one, I don’t know why, we all felt like, that’s the one.”

On the same day that a woman secured a prominent place in the emerging Israeli government, Israeli leaders were excited that Refaeli will join Livni as a distinct face of the Jewish State.

“The picture of an Israeli model on the front cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition gives the American public the chance to see the real face of Israel,” said David Saranga, media consul of the New York Israel Consulate, who also convinced Maxim to do a photo-shoot of former Israeli Defense Force women in 2007.

“Research has shown that many Americans don’t know what Israelis look like, and Bar presents them with an excellent image,” he continued. “Our multicultural society has a number of different faces, of which Bar Refaeli is now one of the most recognizable. Without a doubt, Israel’s image will benefit from this coverage.”

Refaeli might be famous in America for her on-and-off three-year relationship with actor Leonardo DiCaprio, but the cover photo will likely catalyze her own celebrity career, Today Show’s Meredith Vieira observed. Though she loves her life in Los Angeles, Refaeli misses her hometown Hod HaSharon, a town just east of Herzilya – but what she misses most is the hummus, she told Sports Illustrated. “Unfortunately, I have yet to find a place that has good hummus,” she said.

Live from New York, It’s Bar Rafaeli!

Nadeska Alexis

It’s not enough just to be jaw-droppingly hot, on the cover of the new Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, and Leonardo DiCaprio's playmate. Bar Rafaeli wants to host Saturday Night Live, too. The Israeli beauty hosted an after-party last night with One Management to celebrate her illustrious cover downstairs at Macao, with notable attendees like Adrian Grenier (minus entourage) and Josh Hartnett. But when we asked her what's next, the model couldn't help but set her sights on the stage at studio 8-H. Lorne Michaels, are you listening?

How excited were you to do the shoot?

Well its my third year, so I was still excited of course, but I was more excited about seeing the people that I already loved and have worked with before. But being in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue is obviously top notch, the best thing that can happen, so I was very happy about that.

Is the third time the charm?

Well obviously, I got the cover! I’m going to use that in my next interview!

So at this point is the shoot just fun, and without all the nerves?

Well sure, because it was the same photographer as the other two years, so for me, I already knew what he (Rafael Mazzucco) wants. It’s all about movements with him, but he doesn’t ask you directly, he directs you with hand movements, so I already know what he means without him even saying it. So it’s extra special and just so much more fun because it’s the same group for three years, so you get to know each other.

Most models will never reach this point in their careers, so after this success, what’s your next big venture?

I don’t know! I was just telling my agent that this has been my dream since I was 15, so I don’t know where I’m going to dream next. The one thing I was thinking was—well, last Saturday I was sitting at home alone watching Saturday Night Live thinking, how cool would it be to host this? So that might be my next dream.

How do you make that happen? Are you trying?

Well, I tell my agent and he tries to make it happen, but I don’t know, maybe some things are better left as a dream.

I don’t think this should be one of those things.

I hope so, because it would be so awesome to be on that show. But again, I’m trying to think of other things I would love, love, love, to do, because career wise I’ve reached what I dreamt of.

So what are you working on right now?

I’m working on a show with MTV, which is very exciting because I grew up on MTV. I watch it all the time, so for me it’s the best thing that can happen to me—after Sports illustrated of course! It’s just unbelievable, and other than that, I’m doing a swimsuit line with Hurley. We’re designing a bikini line together, where some of the profits will go to charity, which is something that’s very important to me. So work work work!
