This is a thread about actors who had the potential to be great, but were held back by circumstances.

Elvis Presley is my first entry. Some might frown, but at the beginning of his career he showed a lot of genuine talent. Had he not been forced into a lot of worthless fodder by Col. Parker, he might have been equally famous for his acting career as he is for his music career. Check out Jailhouse Rock, King Creole, Flaming Star for proof of his potential.

Elliott Gould is my second entry. Here's a man who was destined for greatness in the early 70s (after his break-out performance in M.A.S.H.) He was considered by many to be the greatest actor of his generation. Yet somehow it never worked out. He had a decent movie career, and his face is fairly familiair, but he could have been equally iconic as De Niro and Nicholson, imho.

Phoebe Cates is another example. After her breakthrough performance in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, she should have become one of the top leading ladies during the 80s and 90s. Yet she never followed up on that promise, and slowly withered away into obscurity. She even retired from acting a few years into her marriage with Kevin Kline.

maybe you didn't get the news in Turkiye, but Iceland has actually landed somewhere in the Atlantic.

yes, but so did Woody Harrelson. don't ask me how Woody's not a one-hit wonder.
