here's a translation I did for TheFashionspot, thought I might just as well post it here too

HOST: we continue with doutzen.. worldwide, the greatest brands are standing in line for her, she’s one of the 5 top grossing  models, she’s on basically every cover and has morer than 50 pages in the current issue of elle.. and still, with her, it feels like she’s the girl next door

VOICEOVER: [..brief introduction on her carreer..]

Doutzen, welcome

Thank you

what really fascinates me about you, aside from the fact that you’re absolutely gorgeous, we could also just sit and stare instead of talking, see you’re born with your looks, but  you also  seem to work really hard for it.. How much do you work out for this body?

umm about three times a week..  I used to do a lot of shadow boxing and jumping rope, and lately  I’ve been doing a lot of ballet excercises. ballet, that  works really well for me, all that hard boxing makes you develop quite big muscles, and I was already born with quite an athletic body, and of course all that bike riding, and skating and other sports.. these ballet excercices however, are really subtle but give great results

Is it hard? do you have to keep excercising so hard to keep this up? to drain your physique like this?

yes! it’s all part of the job. It’s a bit like being a top athlete. and sometimes, it might even be a bit harder than that, because as an athlete you work to a certain goal, to reach a certain speed, but I have to create a certain body, which is more meticulate and maybe even heavier, because you have to eat these specific things and even more so NOT eat specific things. And for me it’s all year  round, I can’t take a break from this, I always have to be bikini-ready

So that’s your goal? are you very critical of your body?

At times, I’m really happy there’s Photoshop [laughs]

They use Photoshop on you even?

Yes of course

Do you have any say in that?

No not really, and sometimes I’m a little shocked by the results and I think to myself ‘oh what a shame’ because I don’t really mind showing a little wrinkle every once in a while, or love handles.

Did Doutzen Kroes just say love handles? where are those? show us! [laughter ensues]

I think it’s important, especially for young girls who see me as a role model, that they know I too have bad days and that I’m not perfect. And it really affects me when I see young anorexic girls and I feel really guilty, because I’m part of creating this illusion of perfection, and that’s my line of work.. And I do believe in it (that approach to marketing), when you walk into a VS store you don’t want to see an oversized model, that’s not what people want. You know, they’ve tried it, there have been so many brands that have tried that approach, but it doesn’t work, people want to believe the dream. But I do think it’s important to, every once in a while, remind people of the reality, by putting a picture on instagram where I’m not wearing makeup.

But when we do an interview we reserve the right to read it in advance before we give permission to print it, Don’t you have the same position as a model?

No, the photographer has the rights to the photos,

I was wondering, once you’ve reached your position in the modeling industry, don’t you get to have a say in wether or not photos are getting ‘shopped’, like saying: “sure I’ll work with you Mario Testino, but I don’t want any touching up”

No, I know I can rely on him to make beautiful pictures, and I’m in this luxury position where I only wrork with photographers who deliver fantastic work, and with shoots like this one (for Elle France) I can say: ‘let’s take this moment’ or ‘maybe we should do a little less photoshop’. I work with people that I trust 100%, I don’t work with just any photographer.

No, but you’re not just any model, You rightfully say you’re an inspiration for young girls, what was the moment you decided you needed to show this other (more realistic) side of you, because things were taking a turn for the worse? what was that moment?

I’ve always kindof felt like that.. well at first you’re in this blissful haze, everything is going right for you, and you only see that (glamourous) side, but at a certain point I started working for DANCE4LIFE and I wanted to give back. But with these things as well, when a young girl looks at me in a magazine, I think it’s important she knows that that’s not what I look like in real life. And like now, I am wearing makeup, and there’s flattering lighting..

Oh so it’s the lighting.. [laughter]

Yes, right now, you guys all look great as well!

Your husband Sunnery has been with us on this show twice already, and when he won EsquireNL best dressed award, we talked a little about you..

[sunnery talks about his personal style, and how he’s so stubborn that he never listens to Doutzen when she’s like: ‘Are you sure about this outfit??’] Do you have any influence on his style?

No.. sometimes he wears these long tshirts that almost look like a minidress and people ask me: ‘did he steal your dress?’ But he has lots of respect for and affinity with fashion. And he really enjoys it and is fascinated by it. He’s really interested in the contents of my wardrobe, and he can be like: ‘you’re throwing this away??’ and things like that.. He really likes to go shopping, while for me shopping is really not my thing.

So do you two adjust your schedules to accomodate eachother, or how does that work? You both have such busy carreers.

Yes we both have great agents, they work really well together  to make time in our schedules for us to have quality time.

So you call your agent to arrange a meeting with sunnery?

well no, I call him myself every once in a while [laughs]. No it’s really important for us to have that time together, and that our agents arrange that for us. Do you have any ambitions still? What do you have left that you want to achieve? You’re basically on top of the world. Well there’s the cover of US Vogue. Which I’ve never done, well never by myself, only with nine other girls. That’s a goal? Yes, always have been, but it hasn’t happened yet. How are you trying to make that happen? I think, I keep on working, working hard, putting myself out there, socialising showing my face at parties, that’s all part of it. At times this is dificult for me, spending hours looking for theright dress, then hair and makeup.. I just really like to spend time with hour son, on the playground, and instead I have to sit in hair and makeup for hours, to dine with people at some charity event..

How big a part of your job is this?

Well, the networking is very important, and that’s why I’m mostly in New York, you can get a call inviting you for a party the day after tomorrow. And you really exchange businesscards and stuff? No, it’s mostly about the photos that are being taken; what you were wearing, your hairstyle and makeup. For instance if Anna Wintour is at that party, and she sees you.. This one time, I was sitting with her at a lunch during fashionweek, and the day after, I got a call if I wanted to work for US Vogue, which I hadn’t done for quite some time. But apparently she had noticed me, and decided: ‘this is a girl we need to have, she needs to  be in our magazine again.’

You’re at the top of the modeling world, and Vogue has like 12 issues every year, but there aren’t 12 top models on your level.. oh there are? how many? 50? 60?

I think about twenty, I think?

is there going to be a moment when you’re no longer interesting because everyone already knows you,  where someone like Anna Wintour is like: that Doutzen girl looks great and all..(but is basically old news)

I think you have a point there.. But that’s why I think it’s important to have the right balance between commercial work.. If  would only do VS, they would say: ‘good for her, she’s making the big bucks, but..’ They also want to see a more artistic side, with editorials like this, show a completely different side of me that inspires them.

So something like VS is just too commercial. Well, I have to disagree with Anna Wintour.. [ doutzen in VS fashionshow 2012 on screen] I think the average viewer would prefer to see something like this. This is what you’re famous for. Do you still enjoy this work?

Yes, absolutely, I love it. The VS fashionshow is amazing. It’s fantastc to  be there, and to be on stage with the performers.. In most fashionshows you’re just a clothes hanger, just one of themany models, but with this show it’s about the girls themselves, and you get respect for how hard you’ve worked on your body, and that’s is something I really enjoy.

But you girls also have a lot of fun together, right?

Yes, but we’ve already seen that.. (at the beginning of the show, they showed Cara’s vid of doutzen and Joan twerking, to her mortification.)

It startled you that we had that video, didn’t it?

I think a lot of people didn’t realize it was me in that video.. But now they do! Sunnery knew it was me.. [they show the video again] yes..That’s what we do backstage.

So imagine, you get that US Vogue cover. How many years do you have left in this business, you think?

You know, I was thinking about that the other day, You know, when you’re young you don’t think about the fact that you’re probably going to live for maybe another 60 years, and being able to provide for yourself for so long, but that moment I thought to myself: ‘I need to have a life for the rest of my life’ And I had always been carefree and in the moment, but now I think about those things.

Is that because of Phyllon?

Yes I think it is.

Does that make your work harder for you?

Well at first, when I held him in my arms for the first time, I thought, I am done with work, this is what life’s all about, but at a certain point, I realized that he it has motivated me and made me more focused on my job. made me work even harder.

Did I understand correctly that you only speak Frysian with him?

yes.

And Sunnery? Dutch? and a little Sranan? (Creole language form Surinam)

Yes, though maybe he should do that more often..

Does he sing Surinamese songs to  him?

Yes he sings.. [starts singing a Surinamese lullaby] Phyllon speaks Frysian, Dutch and English, and when he speaks Frysian with me, he sometimes translates into Dutch for Sunnery.. Sunnery understands some Frysian as well, but he translates anyway, so sweet.

Why is it important to you to speak Frysian with him?

It’s natural to me, it would be like you suddenly having to speak English with your children instead of Dutch.

What I was wondering, doesn’t it drive you crazy that you always have to be so.. of irreproachabble conduct, that you can’t afford yourself any missteps or scandals?

Well, that does kind of comes natural to me.. But it does shock people at times  to see me dancing in a club with Sunnery, they’re not used to seeing my wild side, and in those moments I really just let it all go.. And if then suddenly someone’s standing next to me who wants to take a picture with me, I can be like: ‘just leave me be, I’m enjoying myself right now! we can do that later!’ but then I’ve really done it..

Can you still go out on the streets in Holland?

I prefer not to go to the supermarket by myself..

But that must be hard for you, you seem to be one of the few people in Holland who can’t go anywhere without being constantly recognized, you’re so visible. sometimes I don’t see it.. For instance on Queen’s day (Dutch National Holdiday, now King’s day) I was wearing this big orange wig and sunglasses, and they still recognized me. But being constantly recognized can be dificult.. one time on an American airport, Sunnery Phyllon and  got off this long flight and we were standing in the line, I had gotten no sleep, and there were these people who wanted to take a picture with me, but security didn’t allow it right there, so them came to stand in the line for security with us, but it was at least half an hour long. So I said: ‘sorry, but you have to move to the back of the line’  Then Sunnery said to me: ‘You can’t do this! Once we get past security, you’re going to wait and take a picture with them!’and that’s what I did.. I guess he had a point, when people finally get a chance to meet you.. and you act all grumpy.. people will take that the wrong way. and then you’ve ruined it.. But you know.. every once in a while I just want to just have fun and go all out on the dancefloor, so then, just let me be

that's what i was thinking as well. few weeks ago I watched interview with her when she was 20, maybe a bit older. i was surprise how mature and how humble she was. it looks like she hasn't changed. I really like her way of thinking about fashion industry.
