Clarissa Burt (actress - model - producer) Rome 6.11.2000
Excerpts from an interview by Gianfranco Gramola
The Queen of Miss Universe
Clarissa Burt was born in Philadelphia on April 25, 1959 (Taurus). At the end of the 80s she established herself as a model and fashion model and became one of the most famous and sought-after top models. In Italy since 1986 she has lent her face to advertising campaigns for beauty products. Her first success as an actress was in 1988 with the film by Francesco Nuti: "Caruso Pascosky, di padre Polonia", followed by "The Neverending Story 2" ('90) and in the same year Clarissa established herself as a television personality in the popular program: "Ricomincio da due" with Raffaella Carrà. She then continues a series of hosting alongside Pippo Baudo, Gerry Scotti, Mirabella and Garrani, Fiorello, etc… (Italian TV personalities)
When did you settle in Rome and how do you remember the impact?
It was way back in 1981 and I was living in Paris, and I came to visit Rome. Already at that time I fell in love and was very struck by the colors of this city, all these beautiful yellow ochre buildings, the carriages with horses, the wonderful fountains in the center, the architecture itself that is very striking. You know, for an American who wants to see the Trevi Fountain in person, the Colosseum, Piazza Navona itself, the history behind these monuments... we have seen them in the movies, let's face it. Well, I can say that already on my first visit I had an unbridled love for Rome and I promised myself I would come and live there one day. After that I started working in the fashion world and I often came to Rome to do Haute Couture, because at the time I lived in Milan. With Rome it was love at first sight and in 1986 I actually settled, permanently, in Rome.
Where were your Roman homes?
At first in Parioli, but in two different places and I immediately felt at ease there. I was near Villa Ada, so near the greenery, a beautiful park. Then I moved to via Cortina d’Ampezzo and then on Camilluccia, in via Vallombrosa, then I moved to Campagnano, a little outside Rome. Another beautiful place, in the middle of nature, in a beautiful villa always surrounded by greenery. Then I went to America for 3 years, I betrayed Italy a little, and for a year and a half I have settled back in Rome and I live near Villa Pamphili, which is another wonderful park in Rome. I always have to be near greenery, you know? It's a bit like for you who is among the deer, up in Trentino (laughter). Rome for me is a wonderful city in many ways, but it has its little flaws, like the smog, the lack of parking, and then what do you want? I am very much in love with it and as they say "no relationship is perfect".
Is there a corner of Rome to which you feel very attached?
Maybe I feel more attached to the Spanish Steps, to Piazza di Spagna, because I was very struck by that area. When I came to Rome, at the time when I worked in the fashion world, I was immediately attracted by those beautiful steps. Also because that's where we showed for Valentino. At the height of my modeling career, in fact, I walked for Valentino and the shows were held at Palazzo Mignanelli, in Piazza di Spagna, outdoors, during the day on the famous staircase in question. I remember, on the occasion of those shows, a beautiful evening, and there I felt truly at ease, well, at home. And I must say that that staircase always strikes me, every time I see it.
