Morning Glory: Victoria Lee

Her daily food, fitness and beauty routine—no detail spared.

Nov 16, 2017 7:28pm

They say how you spend the moments immediately after waking colours your entire day, so with the intention to improve our morning routines—and with it every facet of our jam-packed and often not-so-serene lives—we'll be sharing the AM habits of women who combine style with success.

Today’s Morning Glory belongs to Australian model and newly-appointed Victoria’s Secret angel Victoria Lee.

At just 26 years-old, Victoria—who hails from Narrandera, New South Wales—is a modelling veteran, having worked with Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, ELLE Italia, Dazed and more. However, you could say that Victoria’s Secret is her biggest job yet.

Ahead of the show, we thought the time was right to grill Lee on how she gets going in the morning—no detail spared.

Over to you, Victoria.

“It really depends on what I have going on that day but ideally, I wake up at 6.30am. If I’ve had a busy week or have been travelling, this doesn’t always happen. First thing I do is have a glass of water, then another with a little apple cider vinegar and put the kettle on.

I don’t check my phone first thing. I love just enjoying the peace and quiet of the morning—as much as possible in New York, anyway—while I wake up. I splash some cold water on my face, pat dry and press a few drops of This Works Stress Check Face Oil into my skin. I’ll make a coffee and if I have an early work out, I’ll take it with me in my travel cup. I’ll quickly check my emails now to see if anything has come through overnight, along with social media. On the walk to the gym, I’ll speak to my family in Australia just as they’re about to go to sleep.

I’m usually out the door by 7.30am. I prefer to exercise in the morning—it sets me up to be more productive during the day and I find I like to just get home and relax later on.

I love Body By Simone and will either do a Full Body or a Dance Cardio class, or I’ll see my trainer, Jasmine. I love to walk to the gym; I go via the galleries in Chelsea and like to look in the windows to see what exhibits are on. Classes depend on the trainer but are always challenging, fun and a great way to start the day.

My private PT sessions with Jasmine go for an hour. We begin with a good warm up involving light stretching to get my body moving, and a few minutes of skipping. It depends on what Jasmine has planned but we then move onto strength exercises, usually involving light free weights, wrist weights, ankle weights, an exercise ball, exercise bands, a Pilates ring, mini tramp, gliders or just my own body weight. These are broken up with short cardio bursts on the tramp or with the skipping rope, to raise my heart rate.

I always follow up with a good stretch and foam rolling for 10 to 15 minutes to stretch to help my muscles recover and flush out any lactic acid.

At 8.30am, after my work out, I’ll walk home and get ready for my day.

Breakfast depends on how much time I have. If I’m in a rush, I’ll just have a protein shake—I use plant based or egg white protein as whey doesn’t agree with me. If I have more time I love eggs with avocado. How I prepare them changes up but I love a perfect boiled egg with salt, pepper and chili flakes. Both of these options keep me feeling full and energised for the rest of my morning.

I always have a cup of Bushells tea! My Nan sent the tea bags over from home. I take a multivitamin, Vitamin D supplement and a probiotic throughout the day. These keep my immune system strong and healthy to changing time zones, training and busy days.

For my skin, I cleanse using Asap Daily Facial Cleanser. I’ve been using Asap for the last few years and love that it is really effective but also gentle and doesn’t strip the natural oils from my skin. Then, I spray People for Plants Mist Toner and apply my moisturiser. At the moment, I’m using Asap Moisturizing Daily Defense SPF 50+—it’s SPF50+ and the texture isn’t greasy or heavy. I wait for that to settle in before I apply any concealer or makeup, if I’m wearing it that day.

My day-to-day makeup routine takes about five minutes. I use Bare Minerals Stroke of Light Eye Brightener under my eyes. I love the texture of this concealer and it really does give a brightening glow. I also dab a little on the centre of my chin and along the bridge of my nose. I conceal any blemishes with RMS Un-Cover Up. I love RMS products as they are natural, gentle, don’t have any harmful ingredients and feel so nice on my skin.

After concealing, I’ll use my finger tips to apply RMS Lip to Cheek in Spell on the apples of my cheeks. I use RMS Swift Shadow in Garden Rose on my eye lids, and top this with a little RMS Master Mixer for a bit of a shimmer.

I brush my brows with Bobbi Brown Natural Brown Shaper and fill them in with Stilla Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Colour in Medium Warm. I’ll put a little M.A.C. False Lashes mascara on the base of my lashes and comb this through with a lash brush.

For lips I just put on a balm, either Nivea or Smith’s Rosebud Salve. I’ll then put a bit of RMS Living Luminizer on my cheek bones, brown bones and cupids bow. For on the go I have the RMS Mod Collection palette. It basically has everything I need and is perfect for in my bag for touch ups.

I love fragrances by Diptique, Jo Malone and Atelier Cologne. Right now I'm wearing Atelier Cologne’s Orange Sanguine—it's really beautiful, light and fresh. It reminds me of my Nan's mandarin tree.

More often than not, I let my hair do its own thing. I rarely put a brush through it unless I have some serious tangles happening. Usually, I comb it with my fingers—I prefer the texture this creates. I'll spray some Aveda Shampure Dry Conditioner (it smells heavenly) and be out the door. Otherwise, I tie it up in a messy bun.”

How Victoria’s Secret Angel Victoria Lee Stays In Shape All Year Round

She always has ACV in the fridge.

While the verdict is still out on Vegemite, there’s no denying Victoria Lee is one of Australia’s more successful exports. Born in country New South Wales and living in New York City, she’s modelled for some of the biggest names in the business, and this year, she makes her Victoria’s Secret debut.

Taking place in Shanghai, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is like the Olympics of modelling—it’s on everyone’s bucket list. It’s been known to catapult models like Miranda Kerr and Gisele to supermodel status, after all.

Ahead of the show, we caught up with the latest Angel to chat about diet, exercise and everything in between. From how she’s prepping for the big gig to how she remains body confident all year round, we got to know our own Aussie supermodel, Victoria Lee.

SL: Can you start by telling us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Victoria Lee and I’m from a small country town in NSW, Australia called Narrandera (population 3,000). I currently live in New York and have been here for the last 5 years.

Where do your passions lie?

I’m passionate about health & well being. I have actually studied nutrition.

Where are you in the world right now?

I’m actually in Shanghai for Victoria’s Secret.

Congratulations on the VS show, that’s such an achievement! Was this always a dream?

I grew up watching the Victoria’s Secret show so it has been an aspiration of mine to walk in the parade.

What does body confidence mean to you?

Body confidence means to me to be comfortable in your own skin.

Is this an issue you’ve ever struggled with? Being in the modelling industry we understand it can be quite brutal!

I work hard all year round both mentally and physically to ensure that I am always at my peak.

How do you ensure body confidence in the VS show?

By working hard and looking after myself. I listen to my body and my mind to ensure that I am training when I need to train and resting when I feel tired.

Can you take us through an average day on your plate?

My day on a plate is fairly consistent especially when I’m working or I know I have a shoot coming up.

Breakfast — I love eggs, especially poached or simply boiled with salt, pepper and chilli flakes. I’ll have two with avocado, greens and whatever veggies I have in the fridge. If I’m in a rush, it’s a chocolate protein shake with egg white or plant-based protein powder. I’ll add some almond butter, banana and some oats if I need an extra boost of energy.

Lunch and dinner are similar that the focus is on protein, greens and healthy fats. Either chicken, fish, tofu, eggs (eggs are great any time of the day) or maybe shellfish. I’ll make a salad, steam or stir-fry veggies and add a homemade dressing, avocado, nuts and/or seeds. I’ll add quality carbohydrates to any of my meals if I feel like it, mainly quinoa, brown rice or buckwheat. I’ve reduced my sugar intake, fruit is something I cut back on slightly in the lead up to the show and no processed foods.

Do you follow any particular diet or health food trends? Take any supplements, beauty blends or superfood powders?

I’ve always had a healthy lifestyle and know what works best for my body – I stick to protein, veggies, healthy fats and quality carbohydrates. In saying that, I will listen to my body. If I’m craving something or need more energy, I’ll have it.

In terms of supplements, I take a multivitamin, probiotic, magnesium and Vitamin D throughout the day to keep my immune system in top shape.

Being a model, you must have to be a bit more cautious than most. Do you often let yourself indulge? What’s your indulgence of choice?

I occasionally indulge – all in moderation. I have a sweet tooth so something sweet when I want to treat myself.

Is alcohol on the cards?

No

What exercise do you find is most effective for your body?

I love the Full Body class at Body By Simone, it’s a great combination of strength and cardio. Ballet Beautiful is fantastic for toning as the movements are smaller and very specific. I see results really quickly by combining these, but it’s all about moving your body in different ways to keep the mind and muscles guessing.

How often do you workout? What’s the average length of your sweat session?

I aim for 6 days a week, but this varies depending on my schedule and how I’m feeling. Most frequently it’s a Full Body or Dance Cardio class at Body By Simone and these sessions go for an hour at a time.

What makes you feel sexy?

Feeling comfortable in my own skin!

With such a large Instagram following, it’s safe to say you’re an inspiration to many. Who do you look to for lifestyle or style inspiration? Is there anyone you insta-stalk?

I love following inspiring woman like Elle McPherson – she’s had such an incredible career and has really been able to transition from model to entrepreneur and she’s also a mother. I also love following Doutzen – she’s obviously a former Victoria’s Secret Angel and is now an incredible philanthropist.

Quick questions…

Coffee order: Long black with cinnamon

Favourite café: Café Grumpy in Chelsea

Favourite emoji: the little guy scratching his chin

3 things you’ll always find in my fridge: eggs, avocado & apple cider vinegar

Best new app I’ve used: Headspace

Song on repeat atm: Post Malone “I Fall Apart”

If sugar were a superfood, my diet would consist of: oh gosh, so hard to narrow it down!

Most people probably don’t know this about me, but: I love to sing in the shower.

She's at 3:08 (video automatically starts from there)

Read on a few different sites (daily telegraph and daily mail) that she's been named the new David Jones ambassador so hopefully this is true!
