Ali Landry: I Stopped Exercising for Two Years

Unlike many celeb moms in Hollywood, Ali Landry didn't jump right back into exercising just weeks after having a baby. Not at all.

In fact, the former Doritos girl took almost two years off from working out following the July 2007 birth of daughter Estela with her husband, film director Alejandro Gomez Monteverde.

Instead of hitting the gym, Landry, 34, relied on a home-delivery meal service to drop her pregnancy pounds. "I lost the majority of the [post-baby] weight pretty fast doing that," Landry told PEOPLE at Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS A Time for Heroes Celebrity Carnival in L.A. recently. "But I have to say, it was that skinny fat when you don't work out, and you're not toned."

Jumping Back Into Shape

But Landry quickly got shocked back into exercise mode when she was asked to join the cast of the ABC celebrity sports competition The Superstars (which premieres June 23) – and realized she'd be baring her body. "When I got the paperwork for Superstars, and I saw they asked what size swimsuit I wear, I had a hot flash, nearly broke into cold sweats and hired a trainer immediately," she says.

Now back in shape and ready to compete alongside baseball player Jeff Kent, her partner on Superstars (which pairs celebs and pro athletes to compete in various sporting events), Landry feels confident about her body. And she hopes to inspire other new moms.

"They, I think, put me in the best shape of my entire life. I am in shock that I have [definition] in my stomach after having a baby – I didn't even know that was possible," she says. "Hopefully, that will be encouraging to all the women out there who don't feel so good about their body after a baby."

Ali Landry Talks About Her Traveling Trio

post-17383-1245561659_thumb.jpg

Life for Ali Landry and 23-month-old daughter Estela Ines is all about one thing these days: the potty! “Our main thing right now is trying to get the child on the potty,” Ali laughingly told CBB during a recent Giggles and Hugs event. In an effort to keep her daughter still as the two play the waiting game, the model and actress pulls out all the stops — mainly stickers and books — staying hopeful that Estela will relax and go to the bathroom. When she does step up to the plate and produce results, that’s when the fun begins.

“Peepeeing on that potty, there’s a party in the house when that happens.”

With Father’s Day right around the corner, Ali may soon be handing off the potty training to her mother. “I’m going do something for my husband,” she says of her plans for the big day. Looking forward to packing Alejandro Gomez Monteverde’s bags and surprising him with a trip for two to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Ali admits the irony of the situation. “I know, Father’s Day without a child, right?” she muses. “But, sometimes mom and dad need a little time alone.”

“And we’re going to Italy for the summer and Estela is going to be staying with my mother in Louisiana. We travel a lot.”

That said, Estela isn’t always left behind; The trio recently returned from a Bahamas vacation. Unfortunately, baby girl was less than thrilled with the beach scene. “At first she was really, really afraid,” Ali shares. Once her initial fears passed, there was no stopping the rambunctious toddler, who kept her mama constantly on her toes. “There’s no relaxing, and there is no laying down reading books, you’re chasing them absolutely everywhere,” she notes before recalling her former laid-back beach excursions. “Looking forward to those days again!”

Up next for Estela? Her second birthday! Already planning for the big day, Ali reveals that the family will celebrate the milestone at the Silver Spoon beach house in Miami. “We’re excited about that,” she says.

'Spotlight to Nightlight': Hollywood Fatherhood

The hottest role in Hollywood these days is "World's Greatest Dad," but not just any guy can fit the bill. From Brad Pitt to Will Smith to Hugh Jackman, celebrity dads are proving that you can change diapers, go on playdates, coach little league, and still have time to save the world ... on screen anyway! From piggy back rides to premieres, today's famous fathers are as likely to be seen on a playground as on a movie set. In this episode of "Spotlight to Nightlight," Ali Landry talks to Joey Lawrence about raising a family in Hollywood and trying to keep up with an energetic 3-year-old daughter.

Ali's Take

I believe that fathers play such an important role in our lives because for a woman, the role of a father is essential to the way she views males. The first example a little girl has of men comes from the relationship she shares with her dad. I think the greatest gift my father gave to me was the way he loved my mother. He is a man who is honest, kind, loving, and supportive and has always been there for our family. Now that I have my own family, I see so many of those same traits in my husband. What I love about my husband as a father is that he is a man of integrity who puts our family first. When he comes home in the afternoon, he goes straight to our daughter Estela and spends an hour or so just playing with her. I always knew he was going to be an amazing dad. He was blessed to have a father who was a great role model as well and we are all thankful for that.

Being a father is a tough job. Joey Lawrence and I discussed the struggles and the joys of parenting, and he stressed the importance of being present in your kids' lives. Sometimes you work so hard (believe me, dads, we notice!) and take on so much, that days and weeks go by in the blink of an eye. Sometimes our kids drive us crazy, and sometimes they are pure joy and couldn't make us prouder.

Here's to all the dads, grandfathers, uncles, stepdads, and older brothers out there! Happy Father's Day!

Learning about Ali

post-17383-1246163862_thumb.jpgpost-17383-1246163877_thumb.jpg

Entering show business was a result of chance and opportunity rather than a master plan I designed for myself. My success in the Miss Louisiana pageant and the subsequent title of Miss USA was the launching pad for a career and life I couldn’t have dreamed of in my sleepy, Southern town of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana.

My breakthrough role in Hollywood was starring as the first spokeswoman for Doritos during the 1998 Super Bowl commercials. I became a household name overnight and the path of my career was altered in an instant. The Doritos campaign was a great opportunity for me personally and helped transition me from modeling to acting. I worked hard to get recurring roles on “Felicity,” “Two Guys and a Girl,” “Sunset Beach,” and “Popular, ” in addition to three seasons on the hit UPN network series “Eve.” In addition to acting, I found hosting to be a perfect fit for me. I love to interact with people, ask questions, and I feel very strongly that everyone has a story. My hosting credits include the music-talk show "Farm Club.com," NBC's "Spy TV,” and "Full Frontal Fashion" on WE.

I couldn’t have known that all of my ups and downs in Hollywood would have prepared me to play a role that I had been waiting for, Celia, a mother who’s torment and anguish over a tragic accident involving her daughter was personally inspiring to me. Not only was I ecstatic to break out of my mold in Bella, but it was also during this time in my life when I met and married my husband, Alejandro Monteverde. I had never been involved in a project like Bella and it made me reevaluate my role in this industry. After Bella won the top award at the Toronto Film Festival in 2006, my husband and I, along with a team from Metanoia Films, traveled the country promoting Bella in every major city in America.

Along with my new marriage, film and outlook on my career, we found out we were expecting a little girl. The birth of my daughter, Estela Ines, challenged me in so many ways. I made a decision at that point to walk consciously through life and to be the best wife, mother, daughter and friend I could be. Estela Ines was born on July 10th, 2007 and I can credit her for making me the happiest and most balanced I’ve been in my life.

Today, I’m getting back into the swing of things with ABC’s “Superstars” airing June 23rd, a fun and informative show on Yahoo! about celebrity mothers called “Spotlight to Nightlight” airing weekly, and my new children’s line, Belle Parish which will hit stores soon! Anything I do these days involves my passion for being a mother and finding ways to stay connected to mothers everywhere.

'Spotlight to Nightlight': Bundle of Joy, Bundle of Cash

In this current economic climate, couples are undoubtedly factoring in the price of children when deciding whether to have them -- and how many. Considering that the latest reports estimate a kid costs $250,000 from birth to age 17 just for necessities, who can blame them?

On this episode of "Spotlight to Nightlight," host Ali Landry and actress Sarah Clarke ("Trust Me" and "24") discuss the cost of raising children and share tips on how to teach kids about money.

Ali's Take

Kids are expensive. Anyone who has a child finds that out pretty quickly. From diapers to school books to prom dresses, there are at least 17 years of costs and that can be quite daunting, especially in the economic crunch we are living with today.

I remember watching my parents pay their bills every month at the kitchen table and going to the bank every week. That's how I was able to learn about money. You worked hard, you paid your bills, and you saved for a rainy day. Now, so much is done electronically and by credit card that our kids don't even know what REAL money is sometimes. I want to be able to show my daughter that things aren't just magically paid for, and that taking care of a family is a major financial undertaking.

We hear over and over that there are so many ways to save money, but for a lot of people it's really hard to change your routine. My husband and I are trying to implement easy ways to save and also be responsible. While we buy a lot of necessities in bulk, we also try to shop at local businesses and mom and pop shops to spend money within our community and keep those small businesses thriving. As for Estela, I purchase a lot of items for her that are on sale -- I love a good bargain! -- and a size or two too big so that I am prepared when I need them. I also have found some great stuff on e-Bay.

During our conversation, Sarah Clarke told me that she and her mom friends have "swap parties" so they can all swap clothes and toys that their kids have either grown out of or have lost interest in. So many of the things we buy for our kids end up barely being used, and this is a great way to recycle and save money. Sarah also taught me the trick of putting away toys for a while and then bringing them out later again. She said its like her daughter rediscovers the toy and it gets a new life. I can't wait to start using these tips!

My husband and I know Estela will learn by watching us. We pray every night with Estela and thank God for all of the wonderful things we are blessed with and we pray for those less fortunate than us. We know she will have to take care of herself one day and we also want her to be a giving, compassionate person who is in-tune with the needs of others. We want her to know the value of a dollar but, most importantly, to appreciate what she has.
