Here's a little bit of drama....... [gosh, not even our Gem is safe from the media...]

Where's Gemma?

The third leg of the spring/summer 2007 fashion circuit opened in Milan with the world's No. 2 runway model conspicuous by her absence from its lucrative catwalks.

Having briefly appeared in New York, the 18-year-old Australian Gemma Ward was nowhere to be seen in Milan, fuelling speculation about just what might have kept her away from the estimated five-figure per show earnings here.

The backstage gossip at Burberry was that she had been dropped because she had put on weight. A Burberry spokeswoman declined to comment but Ward's friend, the British model, Lily Donaldson, said Ward was absent because "she has things to do". Other reports had Ward acting in a horror film called Strangers.

Ward's agents at New York's IMG and Sydney's Viviens Model Management were unreachable. However, one of Viviens' representatives told the Herald: "That [she had gained weight] would be the last thing I would expect to hear from her".

...& Now Mystery solved to put those rumours to rest...

Weighty film chance sidetracks Gemma

At last, the mystery has been solved. Despite rumours that Gemma Ward was a no-show at Milan Fashion Week because she had gained weight, the reason she failed to strut the catwalk is that she was too busy auditioning for a film.

Her Australian agent, Susie Deveridge, said yesterday that the Perth supermodel had been invited to audition for Australian director Robert Luketic's latest film project, 21.

According to an internet movie database, 21 is based on a true story of gambling experts who took millions in winnings from Las Vegas casinos.

Luketic, best known for the 2001 hit film Legally Blonde, personally requested the New York-based Ward fly to Los Angeles for a screen test, Ms Deveridge said.
