Magda FrÄ…ckowiak - Polish topmodel rocks New York

Specially for Polish Elle edition Gilles Bensimon has photographed Magda FrÄ…ckowiak.

Magda is rocking New York now. She was sixteen when she was signed to prestigous model agency Next. Instead of moving to Paris she was studing in high school in Gdańsk. She set out when she had an international exams in her pocket.

Elle: Your first fee?

Magda Frąckowiak: it was very nominal- 200 zł I think(It's about 64 dollars). It was for a session for "Machina" magazine. I was in high school. I completely don't remember what I spend it on. I earned first "real" money a year later. During the winter break I went to Tokyo for a session to some catalogues and magazines. When I came back home in the first place I went shopping. It was a cheereful day. I've bought a new jeans and my mum got a new bag. After that we went to bank and my mum opened an account for me. It was a Junior account.

Elle: During yuor all high school education you've been working only in breaks between lessons. You could live in Paris or New York..

Magda F:I was sixteen when my mum send my photo for a contest organised by some agency in Warsaw. I won it and I met Darek Kumosa from Model Plus agency. He send me to paris for so-called tests. It was something like screen test. They were taken to show how I look in different poses. They come out really great...

Elle:And a question has appeared:What next....

Magda F: To be honest I haven't been thinking about it at all. I graduated to second class of high school and it was abvious for me and my parents that school is the most important.

Departures for couples of months, shows, full-time working were out of question. I was working during holidays or school breaks. It was very rare for me to leave couple days in school. darek called me and said about shows and sessions and how long will it lasts. I discussed it with my parents and then, together, we made decision. Everyday I had a normal teenager's life: I was participating in all lessons, writing classroom test, exams and relentlessly studying English. What I was dreaming about then? About going to a good univeristy in the United States an studying architecture.

Elle: You was very reasonable girl.

Magda F: There are more and more girls nowdays that are like 15, 16 and the're working full time. Young age is really taking into account. I didn't have a willingness for that. I didn't fell that it's necessary for my happiness. Also in the agnecy nobody forced me to anything. darek has never told me - even if he thought so (laughing)- that I'm loosing my chance, that I'm wasting. I think that when you're sixteen you've no idea about life, world. In this age you're looking for you own identity. Lots of dangerous thing are lurking on young girls. Being alone , far form home, parent and friends. Fast tempo, stress and temptations could have a wrong influence on me. I'm really happy that I haven't started too early.

Elle: You've left just after exams.

Magda F: First of all I passed some extra exams, international esams and national from English. I send my paper to Columbia University , but, unfortunately, I didn't get a schoolarshio. I could afford on so expensive univeristy. I decide to go to Francr. I went to an American university, there. I was studying architecture. I earned money for life working as a model, of course. For the first time I felt that I'm mature, that I'm ready to work as a model for a full time. I started in New York.

Elle: You've packed a suitcase and...

Magda F: ...in January I was in New York in the Next agency. The beggings were nightmarish. I didn't know a city, I didn't have a flat. I didn't want to stay in "models flat", because there were 10 girls, and the atmosphere weren't very nice. People from my agency helped me. Along with jenny, the girl from Holand, who, just like me were in New York for a first time, we rented a studio. It was clean, comfortable, nice and besides, we understood ourselves. After two weeks we had to leave the flat and we decidec to lok fro a new one together. then Kamila Szawińska has helped me.

Elle: So professional hatred it's a myth?

Magda F: Polish models are my friends. Karolina Malinowska, Kamila, Ola Pierzchała and my best friend who I know for 4 years - Ania Kisiel. We always support ourselves.

When Kamila found a studio in her old tenement, we've seen each other very often. I remember how she was cooking soups for me, when I coming back tired, after all days spending on castings. we spend together Easter in New York.

Elle: How expensive is life in New York?

Magda f: Really expensive. A rent costs 2 thousands dollars. I pay one half. The internet, electricity-150. Food about 100 dollars weekly, 80-metro's card, 50-mobile phone plus some small unforeseen expenses. together I have to have 2 thousand just to live. I try to collect all surpluses. there are month's when there is lots of work, but there are also dead periods like August.

Elle: I think that you've turned your Junior account into this for adults.

Magda F: (laughing) All my money that I've earned from that day I've spend on a flat in Warsaw. It's beautiful. In September I'll receive keys. I earned for it myself. I'm pround of myself.

Elle: What;s the hardest things for you?

Magda F: Sometimes I can't cope with tiredness. When I don't have aby sessions, shows, I don't fly to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Europe, I'm running from one casting to another. I try to do my best, to get a good conctract. I have to smile and be rested - and I'm always very tired. I don't sleep alot. I eat little, I'm in rush. I remember that in March and April I constantly had a cold. My organism could't handle that. The loneliness also tease me. Everyday I chat with my mum on the Skype. She's my best friend.

Elle: How you're seeing youreself in couple of years?

Magda F: With a beloved man, children and closest family, in Poland, with a diploma of an architect from a good university like Parsons The New School of Design. But recently I have a lots of new ideas for studies.

A WAY TO FAME

1. Betsey Johnston show.

Famous designer in America. Crazy fifty years lady. After a show we went out with colorfull balloons. When Betsey came out she started to...do star jumps. Then, she gave wonderful floweer for her pregnant daughter. She was so happy to be a grandma.

2.Tank Magazine

New York. I remember this dress. The photographer Andy Eaton wanted me to show how light and airy the dress is. But it was made by thick, heavy material and I had really high heels. I was exhausted.

3. Shwedish Elle.

It was one of my favourite sessions, mainly because of the photographer - Andreas Sjodin. Usually the photographer is famous and he imposes his wish to model or he only wants initiative from model. Andreas asked me if I like what he proposes, what do I think...

4. Ruven Afanador.

Our fourth meeting. This time for Italian Elle. I really like his, mutuality, I think. I adore hir "Terrero" album with matador's pics from Spain and Columbia. This time we've been working two days in an old plane factory. My hair was dyed black, stroked with something that looked like grease to stay in the construction. At night I wore something like stocking to keep my hair in this position.

5. First Cover.

I was sixteen. My all family, friends and familiars bought all issues in neighbourhood.

6. Diesel show.

New York. Very hardrock performance. Lots of black, leather and hard music. One of few shows when I was walking with male models. Deafed by music I even didn't looked if they were handsome.
