Vogue Girl Posted June 25, 2008 Biography: Despite being considered Fashion Pop, Duran launched themselves as White Funk. Born from Birmingham's underground club cult movement, the band was founded by Nick Rhodes and bassist, John Taylor in 1978. After searching for a name, Duran Duran was chosen, from the Milo O'shea character in Jane Fonda's futurustc hit, Barbarella. Other members to join the band were drummer, Roger Taylor, Simon LeBon and guitarist, Andy Taylor. Their first album, Planet Earth, was released in 1981 and included the hit 'Girls on Film'. Contrary to their image, the press branded them Rew Romantic; an image which they quickly shed, although they would keep the hoards of screaming female fans. The group's success has spanned over 20 years, with favourites including 'Rio' and 'A View To A Kill'
