Maria Sharapova set for Australian Open after seeing off Caroline Wozniacki in Hong Kong Classic

Service charge: Sharapova trounced Wozniacki

Maria Sharapova gave her Australian Open hopes a boost with a straight-sets win over world No 4 Caroline Wozniacki, of Denmark, at the Hong Kong Classic on Saturday.

The 22-year-old Russian fought back from two breaks down in the first set to win 7-5 6-3.

The world No 14 has retained her enthusiasm for the sport, saying: ‘I just love to compete. It makes me keep working to improve my play and to try to become a better performer.’

Sharapova said she was excited that Belgian pair Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters have returned to the game.

‘I think it’s great that Kim and Justine are back,’ she said. ‘Women’s tennis needs them. I love to play against the best, and I’m really thrilled of the possibility to meet them at the court.’
