Sin miedo a la arena

Las lectoras mandan. Él es el hombre más atractivo del país, y ella, la 'top' con el corazón más grande. ELLE les propuso una cita a ciegas. Descubre como acabó.

Ésta es la historia de un encuentro nada casual en el que, sin embargo, se dieron todos los ingredientes para poder afirmar que se trató de una cita a ciegas. En el relato de este día de playa –al ritmo de nubes y claros, con epílogo de tormenta primaveral– no prevalecerá un discurso que traicione la verdad. No fuimos testigos del primer contacto entre un hombre y una mujer tras años de pasión epistolar, como tampoco los convocamos para dar forma a una hipotética presentación en sociedad como rutilante pareja del universo celebrity. Lo cierto es que ni ella ni él se conocían hasta que ELLE les propuso protagonizar la portada de este número. Una vez más, el destino quiso entrelazar los hilos indicados para dar forma a este encaje.

Con el guapísimo Cayetano Rivera –elegido por nuestras lectoras, por aplastante mayoría, el español más atractivo del globo– llevábamos tiempo sopesando la posibilidad de hacer algo especial. En cuanto a la espectacular modelo checa Petra Nemcova, queríamos reencontrarnos con ella por tantas ocasiones en las que trabajamos juntos y para darle un abrazo –o tres besos, como ella acostumbra– tras el durísimo golpe que la vida le propinó en la Navidad de 2004, cuando el tsunami de Tailandia se llevó a su novio mientras ella se aferraba a la vida en lo alto de una palmera con la pelvis rota.

El tiempo cura las heridas y hoy el mar está en calma. Saltemos a la arena para celebrar la alegría de la vida con estos dos valientes cuyos mundos interiores coinciden mucho más de lo que cabría esperar. De Cayetano –heredero de las más nobles estirpes toreras de este reino: Ordóñez, Rivera, Dominguín... y, por tanto, codiciadísimo objeto de deseo de la crónica social– llama poderosamente la atención su increíble mirada verde, sus inconscientes poses de torero majestuoso cuando se abstrae mirando al horizonte, su esmerada educación y –a medida que avanza el día– su encantadora y desarmante naturalidad. ¿Quién dijo tímido? Tal vez lo fuese hace ya más de dos años, cuando tomó la decisión de pisar la misma arena en la que habían hecho historia los suyos. Pero tras su simbólica y muy mediática alternativa del pasado septiembre –en el cincuentenario de la Goyesca de Ronda, en Málaga– tenemos el deber de hablar de un hombre nuevo, seguro de todas y cada una de las decisiones que le han traído hasta aquí.

EL PASO MÁS DIFÍCIL

«Crecí en un mundo de toreros sin plantearme que aquello que para mí era tan normal resultaba extraordinario para los demás. Al madurar comprendí de dónde procedo; de una dinastía que, más allá de dedicarse a este arte, es la historia misma del toreo. Cuando era un crío quería seguir los pasos de mi padre; y me hubiese dado igual que fuese arquitecto, pintor o banquero... Quería ser como él y hacer de mi juego favorito, y del de mi hermano, una profesión. Pero el paso definitivo nunca llegaba. No tiraba pa’lante ni a la de tres. Al final, afortunadamente, la incertidumbre del “¿qué habría pasado sí...?†pudo más. No soy de los que se quedan con la duda», matiza el hijo de Francisco Rivera y Carmen Ordóñez mientras Petra le observa con una sonrisa de curiosidad intentando descifrar las claves que activan la pasión de su compañero. Chispea. Son cinco gotas. Dos de lluvia y tres de química. La electricidad está en el aire y a los diez componentes del equipo ELLE que damos forma a esta producción se nos escapa la satisfacción. ¡Están radiantes!

DEL SUEÑO A LA REALIDAD

Hace meses que Cayetano dejó de ser una promesa para transformarse en una brillante realidad junto a quien camina la buena suerte. En consecuencia, ha transcurrido el tiempo suficiente para analizar serenamente el tipo de latido que impulsaba su corazón el imborrable día de su debut. «Me ha costado mucho sintetizar todo lo que viví. Recuerdo mi aislamiento en la habitación, preparándome mentalmente, sumergiéndome en lo que se acercaba. Y, luego, la emoción de la llegada al patio de cuadrillas, cuando vi las caras de mi hermano y del maestro Espartaco, que tampoco habían podido dormir. Verme ahí fue increíble, casi surrealista. Era un manojo de nervios hasta que, de pronto, llegó el momento de la verdad, ése en el que todo se vuelve relativo y tú debes dar lo mejor de ti. Por fin estaba protagonizando el gran sueño de mi vida».

Petra empieza a comprender. Pero... ¿qué significa para este joven la palabra tradición? ¿Es consciente de que en él se identifica a una nueva generación de toreros sobradamente preparados... con idiomas, don de gentes, mucho mundo y la suficiente sensibilidad como para, por ejemplo, disfrutar de cualquier expresión artística? «Para mí tradición significa respeto. Puede que por algunas cosas a las que me dedico [estudió cine en Los Ángeles, colecciona cuadros, es imagen de algunas firmas de lujo –como la línea de trajes a medida de Giorgio Armani o los relojes Victorinox Swiss Army–, administra como nadie sus apariciones públicas...] no responda al típico perfil que se le presupone a un torero; pero en todo lo que hago siempre prevalece el máximo respeto por mi profesión».

¿Cómo le explicarías a Petra lo que significa ser torero? «¡Hombre! Es difícil. En general, le diría que la gran mayoría de la gente desconoce la esencia de esta vocación; incluso aquí, en España... Le hablaría de fuerza, de emociones, de la adrenalina que se dispara cuando un animal de 500 kilos carga contra ti y tú te haces con el control de la situación, de tal forma que consigues pararlo y hasta tocarlo. Creo que cualquier persona ajena a este mundo podría llegar a aficionarse si alguien le explica la esencia de la tauromaquia como es debido». ¿Y qué me dices del torero cool que llevas dentro? ¿La profesión te ve como a un bicho raro? «Cada uno es diferente. En carácter, en técnica, en lo que transmite... El estereotipo de torero clásico está ahí y hay que respetarlo. Yo no me he propuesto cambiar nada. Con ser coherente con mis propias decisiones tengo suficiente».

PARECIDOS RAZONABLES

La sesión de fotos avanza a ritmo de crucero. La electricidad sigue intacta. Petra y Cayetano están a gusto y, por momentos, transmiten cierta sensación de conocerse de toda la vida. ¿Qué les une tanto? Tal vez que ambos, ella con 28 años y él con 30, han aprendido a valorar lo realmente importante de la vida a fuerza de beber algún que otro trago amargo. Cuando Petra convalecía en el hospital tras la tragedia del tsunami –con el inmenso reto de asumir que a su chico se lo había tragado el mar, la cadera rota en cuatro partes y las piernas atadas para evitar hemorragias– una agencia llegó a ofrecer una fortuna a quien consiguiese esa foto. Sin embargo, ella tomó la iniciativa y distribuyó gratuitamente una imagen a la prensa. ¿Qué queda de aquellos malos momentos? «Antes, los pequeños detalles que hacen de la vida algo maravilloso pasaban ante mí casi desapercibidos. Vivimos hipotecados por existencias que nosotros mismos nos hemos complicado y no nos interesa ver el sufrimiento de los demás. A veces tiene que pasar algo terrible para que cambiemos nuestra escala valores y sepamos agradecer tanto como tenemos. No somos conscientes de lo afortunados que somos, de que contamos con el inmenso privilegio de poder elegir; algo con lo que la mayoría de los habitantes de este planeta no pueden ni soñar –explica Petra mientras Cayetano asiente respetuoso–. La muerte de Simon [su novio] me destrozó. Pero descubrí que yo no era tan débil como creía y que contaba con una gran fuerza interior que me ha ayudado a salir de la desesperación. Se trata de aprender a escuchar la voz de tus instintos para dar con el camino correcto, aunque a veces éste sea más largo y doloroso. Sólo cuando finalizas ese viaje puedes afirmar que has alcanzado cierta madurez».

LOS PIES EN LA ARENA

Más bella y solicitada que nunca, la supermodelo checa comparte con nosotros la reflexión que ahora guía su existencia: «Aprende del pasado, mira hacia el futuro, pero vive en el presente apreciando todo lo que te rodea». Cayetano entra al quite y refuerza la sentencia: «A veces, por desgracia, tienes que pasar por una tragedia o verte en un momento muy difícil para caer en la cuenta de lo que realmente merece la pena. Al igual que Petra, estoy aprendiendo a valorar cada detalle y cada momento, porque la mía es una profesión de riesgo. Por eso no hago caso a los ruidos de fondo». Un trueno lejano anuncia tormenta. El mar respira tranquilo. Cayetano y Petra se despiden, descalzos y valientes, sobre la arena.

ELEGIDO PARA LA GLORIA

De todo lo que han dicho de este nuevo torero, ¿qué le ha llegado al alma? «Lo que más valoro, lo que más llena, es el reconocimiento de los profesionales del toreo. Luego, por supuesto, están el público y el propio toro, que también quitan o ponen». ¿Concretando? «No sabría qué decirte», justifica incómodo. No seas modesto. Silencio... pero nada... Un buen amigo apunta: «Curro Romero dijo que Cayetano estaba tocado por la mano de Dios». Pues eso.
