  15. Manon von Gerkan lets life happen, and then makes things work. The German born designer and model, who has made her home in Manhattan since 1993, successfully turned her curiosity about design and accessories into a full-fledged career. With an instinctive talent and a sophisticated feel for form and material, Manon creates items exclusively, as she puts it, "that I would want to wear myself". Her collections "Nature" and "Classic" consist of more than 200 pieces so far, available from her showroom and at select retailers like Barneys New York. Manon von Gerkan's high profile in the modelling and acting world, with ads for L'Oreal or Coco Chanel, cover-shots for Cosmopolitan, Elle, and Shape, plus a couple of legendary features in the "Sportswear Illustrated Swimsuit Issue", appearances in Hollywood features like "Shallow Hal" and alongside Timothy Hutton, have helped to spread the word about her simply sensual designs. Janet Jackson, Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez were among the first to wear Manon's trademark bodychain. Cameron Diaz, Sheryl Crow, Kate Hudson, Naomi Campbell or Kate Moss also treasure distinct pieces from her collections. Manon von Gerkan's work in Gold and Sterling Silver, embellishing the human body with inspirations from nature itself, can constantly be seen in the pages of international magazines like Lucky, Vogue, InStyle, Marie Claire, and Elle. And, of course, around the necks and on the earlobes of female fans around the world. "Whatever I do, I involve myself in it head over heels", says Manon von Gerkan, while talking about her life and her career. Q1 Pease tell us your brief profile and working career. Why did you become designer? I was born and raised in Hamburg, Germany. I started modeling in 1989, then began working in the US in 1992 and moved to NY that very same year. I opened a jewelry store/gallerie named "Shamballa" in 1994 with business partner Danish jewelry designer Mads Kornerup.selling and representing Jewelry designers inspired me to take up design and create pieces I would wear myself.other models, friends, stylists and celebrities would soon ask me to design pieces for them, so I started to create a full line of jewelry, which now features over 500 pieces. Q2 Currently which stores carry your brand in the world? Price range? About 60 stores carry our designs in the States. My small earrings in sterling silver start at $100 retail price, but heavier gold pieces with lots of diamonds go up to about $7000,00 retail. Q3 Could you tell us about the brand? What is the concept behind it? The brand is pretty much myself. creating products and styles, marketing and promoting them under my name.the jewelry line features classic styles as well as lots of nature inspired work. I adapt a lot from things I collect and find on trips to foreign places. Q4 Please tell us the process that your products was born. I get inspiration from every day life, but mostly nature, like beaches, the woods etc. Then I carve a wax sample or for very complicated shapes I get a professional wax carver to make a sample.sometimes we even use CAD machines to get the wax model. after we make a mold I then add stones, chains etc to finish the product. Q5 What inspires your design the most? The nature and world around me. Q6 Which celebrities are wearing? Pamela Anderson, Ashanti, Victoria Beckham, Joy Bryant, Naomi Campbell, Cameron Diaz, Celine Dion, Drea De Matteo, Dido, Eve, Nelly Furtado, Gina Gershon, Salma Hayek, Faith Hill, Kate Hudson, Jade Jagger, Janet Jackson, Scarlett Johannson, Rashida + Kidada Jones, Liya Kabede, Kiara Kabukuru, Heidi Klum, Beyonce Knowles, Jane Krakowski, Cindy Lauper, Peggy Lipton, Lucy Liu, Lisa Marie, Jennifer Lopez, Kelly Lynch, Elle Macpherson, Josie Maran, Kate Moss, Bridget Moynahan, Carolyn Murphy, Sandra Oh, Outkast, Gwenyth Paltrow, Rachel Ray, Charlotte & Samantha Ronson, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Molly Simms, Britney Spears, Steven Tyler, Naomi Watts, and Reese Witherspoon. Q7 Who is your dream collaborator? Wau, too many to choose from, but my ultimate and favorite fashion designer is Azzedine Alaia.i love his sense of the female form. Q8 What do you think about design industry in your country? Oh both countries, germany and the usa are very known for bringing out great design and designers. The impressive list would be too long to publish. But I personally try to combine my roots with my living place of choice. I think this is the basis of my success and I feel very comfortable in working my business. So to answer your question, both countries have a huge industry going on, you only have to connect at the right time and place. Q9 Could you tell us about your next collection? Any future plans? Expect the unexpected. Q10 When is the most important time of your day? This is the morning, I get the most done in the morning, but I get inspired the most at sunset time and work creatively till late in the night. Every second count, days can’t be long enough. Q11 Are there any places or countries you would like to visit? Yes, every country in the world, known and unknown. I have been almost all around the world, only Japan is on my priority list of places to go. And I want to travel the universe too. I assume there are great places out there in space. Q12 Do you wish to buy something right now? Currently are you into something? I'm a woman and I'm into gadgets too. The new I-pod, shoes, furniture,... The list is long, but more important is to hang out with real friends and family incl. my little dog. Consuming is fun but spending quality time with close friends is the best. Q13 Do you have anyone, any place, anything that you are strongly inspired by recently? I get inspired every day at any place at any time.but most ideas come to me either in the shower or on my bicycle... when it's most difficult to scribble them down. Q14 Do you have any advice for the young people? Stay true to your dreams and personality. Try to get something useful done every day without hurting anything or anyone. Q15 What is your goal? What do you want to achieve in your career? My problem is to find the time to transform my inspirations into design and products. I will need at least 3 life to get half through with what I want to accomplish.
