Gennaro Ivan Gattuso
Galliani: Gattuso Going Nowhere Milan chief Adriano Galliani insists Gennaro Gattuso will stay at Milan despite Italian media reports suggesting the contrary. The midfield dynamo has had a turbulent season with the Rossoneri and his performances on the pitch have not been up to the standard expected from one of the world’s best defensive midfielders. Many believe Gattuso is on his way out of San Siro but Galliani has other ideas. “Gattuso has a certain character but he will stay, I am sure of this,” said Galliani. “There is no way that we are going to sell our best players. I really hope that he can stay.” “Of course, there are always players who want to leave and those who want to stay but I hope that even those who want to leave will stay.” It seems as if a number of top European clubs are after Ringhio’s signature including Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Milan have been poor this season and they are struggling even to make the Champions League but Galliani doesn’t mind if his side played in the UEFA Cup. “It doesn’t matter if we play in the UEFA Cup, we have won more club honours than any other football club in the world.” “If we did play in it, it would only be for one year out of five.” The Rossoneri are four points behind fourth place Fiorentina and they will be hoping to close the gap when they clash with Livorno on Sunday.

Filippo Inzaghi
Inzaghi: Top Four Still Possible Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi believes his side can still qualify for the Champions League. The Rossoneri have had a season they would rather forget both domestically and in Europe and as a result they now face what seems like a losing battle to make the final Champions League place. However, Inzaghi is optimistic, but he admits that he will settle for UEFA Cup football should his side fail with their fourth place objective. “We still believe in fourth place but when you are chasing it also depends on the results of the other teams,” said Inzaghi. “We will try to get in the Champions League but if we don’t and end up in the UEFA Cup then we will try to do well all the same.” Milan are currently fifth in Serie A and they face a tricky clash away to relegation fighters Livorno this weekend. No doubt Inzaghi and co will be hoping for maximum points. Anything less could see Milan’s Champions League ambitions being held hostage to fortune.

Paolo Maldini
Maldini To Be Awarded FIFA Order Of Merit  FIFA is to bestow the Order of Merit on AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini, the Gazzetta dello Sport has revealed. The FIFA Order of Merit is usually awarded to those who are considered to have made a significant contribution to football. The prize is not necessarily just for footballers, as apart from the likes of Pele, Franz Beckenbauer and the only other Italian to have won the award so far, Dino Zoff, political figures such as Nelson Mandela and Henry Kissinger have also been recipients. Maldini will become only the second Italian to win the award, following in the footsteps of 1982 World Cup-winning captain Dino Zoff. The 39-year-old Maldini will receive the honour at the annual FIFA Congress in Sydney next month. The Milan captain is set to retire from football at the end of the season after a glorious career lasting almost a quarter-of-a-century. He has won seven Scudetti, one Coppa Italia, five Italian Super Cups, five Champions League titles, five European Super Cups and three World Club Cups. He is both Milan and Italy’s all-time appearance maker, and is regarded by some as the best defender in the history of the game.

Aragonés: Raúl Is Improving Spanish national coach Luis Aragonés indicated his belief that Real Madrid striker Raúl has gotten better as the season has progressed among other Spanish national team matters in an interview on Argentine radio. The Madrid media have launched an offensive throughout the season to get Raúl reinstated into the national team for Euro 2008 and although Aragonés believes he has seen something extra from the striker in recent weeks, he still insists that he will make the decision that is best for the team. "Raúl is improving and I believe that he will improve more. In his last few starts he has been the best I have seen him this season. Real Madrid are a massive club, but I am the coach, the selector for the Spanish national team and in the end the decision is my responsibility," he told Radiofuria. "People think that Raúl must be included, but more than anyone I just want to see Spain succeed. In that respect I will not throw stones against my own tile roof." Possession Is Key Aragonés feels that keeping hold of possession will be vital if Spain are to taste success at Euro 2008, as he believes that there are a number of other teams that will look to overrun his side with their superior physical attributes. "In order to win it is important to keep the ball. I have the luck to have only lost four of my forty-six games in charge of the national team - I think that is a good record," he asserted. "Ever since I took over I have had a number of players who are good in possession and we must make use of that because physically we are not the strongest. In all matches, not only the recent one with Italy, we have won by having much greater possession of the ball and by being patient in looking for opportunities to score. Best Technically Spain will take their place in Group D alongside Sweden, Russia and cup-holders Greece, with Aragonés keen to press home the one major advantage he believes they have over their rivals. "Perhaps technically we are the best team in the group. The others beat us physically, in winning the second ball and in playing a long ball game... but it will be very even," he explained. "In fact, Greece are the current European champions even though we beat them away from home recently. Let us think that we have possibilities, but to get there we need to be a one hundred percent. The European Championships are very competitive because all the teams are closely matched."

Raúl And Guti Fit For Athletic Real Madrid will be able to call on Raúl and Guti for their match against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday after the pair shook off the injuries that saw them miss Thursday's session. Both players were consigned to gymnasium work with the club's physios on Thursday, but took to the training field on Friday and look set to be part of coach Bernd Schuster's starting line-up on Sunday, a game in which Madrid may have the chance to clinch the title depending on results earlier in the weekend. Guti missed the victory over Racing Santander through suspension and is likely to replace Mahamadou Diarra in central midfield, while Raúl will resume his place up front with Arjen Robben and Robinho operating either side of him. Everybody in the squad except for Christoph Metzelder was present for Friday's session, including striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who is right on schedule on his return from sinovitis in his right ankle. The Dutchman could even make the squad for Sunday's game, although a return against Osasuna next weekend seems like a more realistic proposition, with Madrid keen to get him back to full fitness for their game with Barcelona on the semi-penultimate day of the season. Schuster does have one suspension to deal with ahead of the Athletic match, with Fabio Cannavaro's absence likely to result in a defensive reshuffle that will see Gabriel Heinze move into the centre of defence and Marcelo come into the side at left-back.

Sergio Ramos
Ramos Apologises For Public Criticism Sergio Ramos has explained his motivation for criticising Real Madrid in the press recently... The young defender had told the press of his disappointment after his club did not publicly come out in support of him after his red card against Mallorca on Matchday 31. He felt that he was abandoned by the Bernabéu side at the time that they needed to support him the most, thus prompting a public outburst. However, he has now tried to mitigate these actions, stating that he could have handled the situation differently. He told As, "That was a misunderstanding. I didn't want to create a big debate about it because that helps neither me nor the team, especially since we're on the verge of a title that we all want to enjoy. "I did feel a bit isolated in that nobody came out in support of me, but I'm certainly not on bad terms with my colleagues. I get along well with them, and I feel loved by them all. "Since then, I've spoken with whom I've needed to speak." As ventured that one of these was sporting director Pedja Mijatovic. "Yes," confirmed the Spanish international. "I made the mistake of speaking to the press instead of the club, but I'll learn from this. "I don't really regret it, though, because that was really how I felt and I stayed calm in saying it." Barcelona? I Don't Care Discussion turned towards the run-in, one that sees Real Madrid virtually assured of the Liga title and arch-rivals Barcelona close to the Champions League final. Ramos was only game for discussing one of these. "Barcelona? Call it morbo if you like, but I don't care about Barcelona," he sniffed. Can we do better in Europe next year? With the signings of last year, we've formed a very good group. "We just need a couple more, then we'll see a phenomenal difference." As asked whether or not Madrid had merely been the 'least bad' this season. "We fully deserve the Liga and the prize is there," he countered. "Nobody will lay down regarding the Liga because people value this title. "It's true that Madrid are different from last year, too. We have used the wings, the counter-attacks, and we hold our lines. Maybe last year we actually had more flaws that way."

Gabriel Heinze
Heinze Wants Ronaldo Reunion Real Madrid fullback Gabriel Heinze hopes that Cristiano Ronaldo will eventually follow him to La Liga, but admits that the transfer is "impossible" at present... Mention Gabriel Heinze’s name around Old Trafford and you’re likely to get a frosty glare. The Argentinean spent nearly three years with Manchester United, making 53 appearances, before becoming embroiled in a transfer saga that almost led him to rivals Liverpool before Real Madrid swooped for him last year. The 30-year-old has witnessed Red Devils’ gaffer Sir Alex Ferguson’s transfer market stubbornness first hand, and thus admits that the idea of Real luring Cristiano Ronaldo to the Santiago Bernabeu is somewhat far-fetched. However, he insists that he’d love to see his Portuguese former-teammate join up with Los Merengues at some point. "Yes, we should sign him, but I believe it is impossible," Heinze conceded. "While Cristiano continues at his level, and knowing Alex Ferguson, I believe that it will be very difficult for Madrid to sign him. "He is enjoying glorious times in Manchester and Ferguson was the man who helped him reach this level. While Ferguson is still there, there is little chance of signing him. "He is a lad who has always spoken well of Madrid, but in Manchester he is making huge strides and it is normal that he doesn't want to change. He is young and has plenty of time to come to this team."

Gabriel Heinze
Heinze: Ayala's The World's Best Centre-Back Real Madrid and Argentina defender Gabriel Heinze has confided that his idol and favourite defender is international teammate Roberto Ayala... Ayala has not had the best of seasons since moving to Real Zaragoza from Valencia (via Villarreal), but Heinze contends that the veteran stopper is well worth emulating. RealMadrid.com recounts his telling As: "Roberto Ayala is the best centre-back in the world in my opinion. There will never be anyone like him. "I've seen him do things that no one else can do. He's an example for all of us. I spent six years playing with him and he taught me so much." But as for his true role model, that honour went to another albiceleste great. "Diego [Maradona] was always my idol," he said. "Maradona made me feel things no other football player could. We have a good relationship. "Diego nowadays feels just like any old player. From what I've heard and seen, his teammates always came first. That's what I call a true captain. He always fought for his teammates first and then himself. "Is Raúl like that? I don't know Raúl that well, only from this year, but he's the reference point of this Madrid both on and off the pitch. The most important aspect of Raúl is that he sets an example on a daily basis, and that's a lot to ask of a captain." Madrid Developments Heinze was asked about where he feels most comfortable playing at the Bernabéu. "When you get older you tend to gravitate towards the centre, but I like both positions," he said. "Does Casillas help? Yes, we get into it every so often, but he's phenomenal. I think he's doing a great job. "There are always problems on the pitch. There's a lot of shouting, and if you have to insult a teammate to get his attention, you do it. But once the match ends it's all over. I don't have the credentials to judge Iker, but he's among the best in the world. "When will we be able to celebrate the Liga title? I don't know, but just thinking about it gives me goosebumps. We've gone through so much wear and tear this year to make Madrisismo happy. I don't care when it happens. I am only thinking about winning on Sunday."

Gonzalo Higuaín
Higuain Refuses To Devalue La Liga Crown Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain has dismissed suggestions that if they win this year's La Liga title, Madrid will do so as the best of a bad bunch, indicating that the title would be fully deserved because of the effort they have put in throughout the campaign. The number of points dropped by Madrid and Barcelona in the second half of the campaign, along with Villarreal failing to deliver from their promising position three weeks ago has prompted many to suggest that this year's title race has been a poor anticlimax and an indication as to the lack of strength in the Spanish league. Higuain does not follow this line of thought and believes that Madrid's potential title success will be as important as it would be in any other year. "Sincerely, I do not give importance to such suggestions. The league is won by the team with the most desire, the one that is the most consistent over the season, and Real Madrid are leading by their own merits, nobody is giving points away," he told Marca. Depending on results elsewhere, Madrid could have the opportunity to wrap up the title against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday and although Higuain admitted that the squad would like to seal their win as soon as possible, they are aware that there will be more chances to come. "The squad is excited about the prospect of being champions on Sunday, although we do not want to think about that, because it depends on other results. There is no anxiety, just determination to go and win the next match," he affirmed. "The title will come in due course, it is necessary to be calm and to concentrate on obtaining the three points because [Athletic] will also come to win. We will go into the game with the intention of scoring an early goal, but we will be patient if not, because the game lasts ninety minutes."

David Coulthard
David Coulthard's love life is out of gear after he parted ways with girlfriend Karen Minier Greybeard David Coulthard, the oldest driver in Formula One, reckons there is plenty of life left in him — and a championship win too. The 37-year-old Scot may be a multi-millionaire and a highly successful businessman on the side, but he is ready, willing and able to stick his neck out to go to work on the threshold of survival at 338 kmph. The Red Bull driver laughs off his veteran status and insists: “I’m not ready for my bus pass quite yet.” Coulthard has amassed 13 wins and 61 podium places and is the fourth highest points scorer of all time in his 13-year flirtation with Formula One. “OK, I am the oldest guy on the grid — but I’m not finished yet. And I’m not about to slow down,” he says. “I am absolutely certain I can win another Grand Prix. And I still have the ability and the desire to win the championship.” He cites, with a smile, heroes Nigel Mansell, at 39, Damon Hill, 36, and Frenchman Alain Prost, 37, who all left it late to clinch world titles. Coulthard holds the record as Britain’s top points scorer — 513 — and despite his whitening whiskers and flecked hair, he adds: “I also have a few wrinkles, but none of this affects my ability to race a car and get the most out of it. I can be as competitive as the next guy.” The Scottish driver heads a quartet of Brits — McLaren’s sensational Lewis Hamilton, tester-turned-racer Anthony Davidson and one-time winner Jenson Button — hell-bent on ending Britain’s Formula One title famine. “I feel there are more wins in me,” says the Monaco-based ace, “and I am as fit as I have ever been. I feel in great shape mentally and physically. And I am content with my life on and off the track. It is far too early for me to even think about quitting, even if there are plenty of business opportunities out there for me. “This car excites me and I am restless to get it to the stage where we have it just as we want it. I will be very surprised if this season we don’t take significant steps forward after all the hard work that has been put in.” Team boss Christian Horner said: “Nobody should be fooled into thinking that because he is the oldest guy out there DC isn’t capable of being a winner.” The lantern-jawed hearthrob gazes from his harbour-side apartment in Monaco, close to the Columbus Hotel he part owns, overlooking the berth of his yacht and ponders on a private love life that has hit more skids than his F1 career. He shrugs: “That’s another aspect of my life I will have to get right.” He has just split from his stunning girlfriend Karen Minier, a former model-turned TV broadcaster. They were engaged and were planning to marry later this year. It is the third time Coulthard’s marriage plans have floundered. He had slipped engagement rings on the fingers of two other beauties. Models Heidi Wichlinski and Simone Abdelnour both lived it up as fiancées of Coulthard on his worldwide jaunts in private jets and his ocean-going yacht, in between stopovers at his luxury homes in Monaco and Switzerland, before they parted. In between times the man they call DC had dallied not-so-seriously with London society It-girl Lady Victoria Hervey and fashion models Heidi Klum, Andrea Murray and Ruth Taylor. I guess it’s a racy lifestyle to match his day job.
