FLAMENGO SET TO OFFER RONALDO LIFELINE Brazilian club Flamengo have reiterated their desire to sign AC Milan's injured striker Ronaldo, despite claims the player is negotiating a new one-year deal to stay at the European champions while he recovers from knee surgery. The 31-year-old ruptured tendons in his left knee against Livorno earlier this month and, after undergoing surgery in Paris last week, admitted he was prepared for the possibility that the injury may force him to prematurely retire. Flamengo president Marcio Braga is seemingly undeterred by the Brazil international's caution as he seeks to prise the player away from Milan, where his current contract is set to expire in June. He said: "We would welcome him with open arms. He knows that. We have already offered that to him. "It would be wonderful if we could count on him here, among us. That said, Ronaldo is currently negotiating a one-year extension of his contract with Milan, so he will have to choose." One advantage of a return to his homeland would be the opportunity to receive ongoing treatment from Jose Luiz Runco, who is the doctor of both Flamengo and the Brazil national team. And Braga added: "He knows that if he wants to come to Flamengo to get over the injury, he can."

Ronaldo doubtful about recovery Milan - AC Milan star Ronaldo has said he fears he may have to quit football as he begins his recovery from a second major knee injury in his career. Repubblica TV on Tuesday showed footage of the Brazilian striker with his father and son in a Paris apartment next to the Pitie-Salpetriere hospital where he was operated on February 14. "I must be prepared. I know well that it won't be easy," the dispirited Ronaldo said. "It was a very difficult operation and something could happen during the rehabilitation, which could mean having to quit playing. "Of course, no club wants a 31-year-old, operated twice (the first in 2000), who suffered two terrible injuries to his knees. No club can think of signing such a player." Ronaldo was stretched off the pitch in tears minutes after coming on in a Serie A game on February 13. He suffered the rupture of the rotula ligament in his left knee. Doctors said he could fully recover by the end of 2008.
  7. Injury puts Coulthard out of test David Coulthard has pulled out of Red Bull's test session in Barcelona because of a neck injury. The Scot, 36, tweaked a neck muscle on the first day of the final pre-season test and will be replaced in Tuesday's run by Toro Rosso's Sebastian Vettel. Coulthard will undergo treatment in the hope he will be fit for the final day. The team said Coulthard's injury is not serious but he does not want to aggravate it ahead of the season opener in Melbourne on 16 March. Coulthard, who is entering his 15th season in Formula One, only managed 25 laps during Monday's test at the Circuit de Catalunya. Testing was affected by wet weather in the morning session but the car also struggled with technical problems. Coulthard's team-mate Mark Webber completed 71 laps with a best time of one minute 23.115 seconds, just over a second short of pacemaker McLaren's Lewis Hamilton. Vettel is available to cover for Coulthard on Tuesday because Toro Rosso, Red Bull's sister team, are only running one new car in Barcelona.
  8. Coulthard expects competitive season David Coulthard has confirmed paddock speculation by agreeing that Red Bull is likely heading for a competitive season with the new Adrian Newey-penned RB4. The Scottish veteran, who is sitting out Tuesday's testing at the Circuit de Catalunya with an apparent neck twinge, said he believes the Austrian-owned outfit will be among the fight just beneath big two competitors Ferrari and McLaren in 2008. "I expect that we will be fighting against BMW Sauber and Williams," Coulthard told Motorsport Aktuell. He explained that the Renault-powered RB4 should be a regular points-scorer this year, while the target in 'exceptional circumstances' could even be a maiden victory for the Milton-Keynes based outfit. Meanwhile, Coulthard confirmed that qualifying is not his favourite part of a Grand Prix weekend. "In my entire career, the race has always been my stronger quality," he admitted.

Kaká targets return for Arsenal game Kaká said he should be fit to face Arsenal FC in the concluding leg of AC Milan's first knockout round tie despite picking up an injury on Sunday. 'I hope to play' The attacking midfielder took a heavy knock to his right knee during the 2-1 Serie A win against US Città di Palermo and had to be replaced at half-time by Yoann Gourcuff. However, scans have ruled out a serious injury and the 25-year-old is plotting his return to action. "I will definitely miss the midweek game against [Calcio] Catania," said the Brazilian international, who has struggled with persistent knee trouble this season. "At the moment my knee hurts a lot but I hope to play against Arsenal." Training apart Meanwhile, Alessandro Nesta and Clarence Seedorf, who sat out the Palermo victory because of thigh and ankle injuries sustained in the 0-0 first-leg draw against Arsenal in London, are still training apart from the squad. They are also expected to skip Wednesday's trip to Catania but should both recover in time for the decider against Arsène Wenger's men on 4 March.

'Untamable' playboy Jenson Button splits with model girlfriend His playboy ways have cost Jenson Button dearly. Last month the 28-year-old Formula 1 racer was seen drooling over a pretty brunette. Now I can reveal he has split from his longterm girlfriend Florence Brudenell-Bruce. My sources say Flee, as she is known, gave Button the push last week. "Flee is gorgeous but Jenson couldn't be tamed,' says a friend of the 22-year-old. "They have cooled things off." Button's spokesman says: "They have split." "They both have busy lives and their own careers."
