Raúl González Blanco
Raul @ MARCA Raul reveals Real after early goal against Roma Real Madrid captain Raul Gonzalez revealed the worst kept secret in Spanish football when he told Spanish sports daily Marca here Tuesday that they had to score quickly against AS Roma. The nine-time European champions have to overturn a 2-1 deficit against Roma in their Champions League last 16 second leg clash on Wednesday if they are to continue in this year's competition. "We've got to start intelligently and try to make the most of the atmosphere that will be in the stadium at the kick off. We've got to try and score in the first 15 or 20 minutes," said Raul. "The first few minutes always establish the rhythm of the game and how things go afterwards. The idea is to make an impact from the start," he added. "We are up against a complicated rival and who have, among all their players, Totti. All the attacks seem to go through him. Rome are very quick and they can damage you." Raul will almost certainly have the prime responsibility for finding the net as Real officials said on Tuesday that "only a miracle" would enable Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy to start. Van Nistelrooy has a right ankle injury sustained a week ago. "Ruud is very important. If he can be there, it would be better. He's our goal scorer but when he's not able to play, the team can rise to the occasion. The squad has enough quality to move things on," added Raul. Nevertheless, Raul is familiar with getting the ball in the net if required. He's the leading scorer in Champions League history with 60 goals to his name, four of which have come this season including the vital away goal in Rome two weeks ago. In addition to Van Nistelrooy, his compatriot Arjen Robben is also out of the Real squad against Roma. Real doctors modified their prognosis on Tuesday and said that Robben was likely to be out for four weeks with a severely sprained left ankle, which he suffered during Real's 3-2 win at Recreativo Huelva on Saturday.

David Coulthard
COULTHARD REALISTIC David Coulthard believes the Red Bull Racing team have taken a large step forward but has forecast it will be difficult to challenge for podium finishes in the new Formula One season. Coulthard believes he and team-mate Mark Webber will again find it tough to crack the dominance of Ferrari and McLaren. "I think we've made a big improvement," Coulthard told www.autosport.com "But I think McLaren and Ferrari are at the front, and then there's a group of uncertainty with BMW, Williams, Renault and ourselves. A lot of guys fighting over four places. "The podium will be difficult if all the McLarens and the Ferraris finish, but I think there's definitely potential to make this car quicker. "We've got an area that we know is weak and we just need to be able to design and build the parts." Webber added: "It's very tight between everybody. "Between Williams, Renault and everybody, it's very tight. Ferrari are on their own, then McLaren, then BMW, then the rest."

Jenson Button
BUTTON SEES BRIGHT FUTURE FOR HONDA It is inconceivable Honda could endure as wretched a season this year as they did in 2007. The team won a miserable six points in total from the 17 grands prix - all by Jenson Button - with team-mate Rubens Barrichello drawing a blank for the first time in his 15-season career. Their embarrassment was made even more painfully acute by the fact they managed to score only two more points than Super Aguri to whom they supply engines, yet whose budget they dwarf in comparison. Fundamental design flaws and lack of leadership, with too many people pulling in different directions, resulted in the car being one of the worst to take to a track in recent seasons. Button and Barrichello were naturally dejected, yet they carried themselves with dignity throughout a tortuous campaign as they refused to ridicule or deride those at fault. The two men appreciated their criticisms would serve no purpose, so they primarily kept their counsel, while at the same time hoping matters would be addressed behind the scenes. What unfolded towards the tail-end of last season was a pro-active recruitment drive as Honda sought to employ the best. When Ross Brawn was appointed team principal in November, Honda scored a considerable coup in landing a man widely regarded as a technical genius, and key to Ferrari's return to winning ways. Much is now expected of Brawn, but for this year do not anticipate that Honda will all of a sudden emerge from being tail-enders to title challengers. Button knows a greater degree of respectability would be much more in keeping, with Brawn's ideas and philosophy likely to come to the fore in 2009. Although testing results have not been particularly encouraging, there is still an air of positivity swirling around Honda that was undoubtedly missing this time a year ago. "For the first race I think it would be good for us to be in the points; that would be a good starting point," assessed Button. "But we are not able to turn it round so quickly because so much has changed within this team, with this car completely different to any other Honda or BAR I've driven. "I'm still massively looking forward more to this season than I was last season where we had a car which wasn't just slow, but very difficult to drive and very unpredictable. "I also believe in the people at the team now, whereas I didn't so much during last year because we didn't understand our problems. "We didn't know how to improve. We thought we were doing so, but we weren't. "With Ross being in control on the technical side, that is a big step forward for us because it's something we've been lacking. "It's easy coming up with some good ideas, but it's understanding which ones we should work with, then persevere with and try and improve. "Now we have that direction with Ross. Personally I feel the team is at its strongest it has been personnel-wise." After suggestions last year he would consider leaving if the team did not start to show signs of improvement, Button could now note happier at Honda. Whilst one man does not make a team, there can be no doubt Brawn's arrival has impacted significantly on Button's psyche. "We all know it will take time for him to settle in and for his ideas to start making a difference with the mechanics of the car," added the 28-year-old, due to embark on his ninth year in Formula One. "But within the team, even when Ross walks into a room, you can see the confidence of people lift. "After what happened in 2007, it would have been very difficult to keep the whole team confident and giving 100 per cent. Morale does drop. "But bringing in Ross has made a big difference because people really listen to him and what he has to say. "The guy has so much experience in F1 after being involved with the best teams and winning championships, and that is important. "At the moment, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else in Formula One. "I admit for 2008, it won't be us that wins a world championship. "It will be McLaren or Ferrari, but for the future in the sport, I can't think of anywhere better to be than here at Honda. "Ross knows it is a challenge here, that's it's not going to happen overnight, that it is going to take a while. "But we have the facilities here to be a front-running team, we have the personnel now, so it is just a matter of time."

Fabio Cannavaro
Cannavaro: Maldini And Baggio The Best Ever Real Madrid centre-back Fabio Cannavaro has revealed that he feels that his side's teamwork has improved this season over last, especially in defence. However, he insists that young buck Sergio Ramos has some way left to go if he's to match some of his old colleagues... The Italian World Cup winner told Radio Marca that he's happy to be involved in first team affairs at the Bernabeu, and that he feels that the level of teamwork is increasing significantly. "I expected to play a lot, and I always have done," he said. "SOmetimes it's not so good because you need to rest and recover, but because my colleagues are injured there's no other way. "The defence this year has imprvoed on last year's as we play as more of a team. "I try to be a good partner and help the younger generation through. In their day, Maldini and Costacurta made me who I am. "Once I retire, I'd love for my temamates to say 'Fabio taught me this or that...'" Givingan exact example, he said, "Sergio Ramos has a lot of strength and always seems to play strong, but he goes into everything so strongly. He needs to learn to control that temper. "He has extraordinary qualities, but lacks much to be like Maldini. For me, Maldini is the best footballer I've met, along with Roberto Baggio." Roma Match Approaches Looking ahead to the Champions League second leg tie with AS Roma, he said, "This match is crucial because we want to continue in the Champions League. "The crowd wants a tenth title, and we want to get it. I have Ligas, Scudettos, Cups... but I lack the Champions League. "An Italian team in the final? I'd prefer that this didn't happen, and not Barcelona either." Return Of Robinho Robinho could make his first start since succumbing to injury recently against Roma, much to the veteran stopper's delight. "Robinho is a spectacular player with lots of quality," enthused the ex-Juventus man. "When he wants to move in on goal or score, he succeeds. This is the guy that breaks the game. "If we win the Champions League, I'll lose the Golden Ball to him! "And the blackest moment for this team was when he was injured. He is a crucial player for Real Madrid." And The Future Looking ahead, Cannavaro offered little insight into what's to come. "I'm in no hurry to renew my contract," he shrugged. "I still have this year and then one more on my deal."

Higuaín press conference "Referees? Schuster only likes to talk about football" Gonzalo Higuaín offered Sunday's press conference at Real Madrid City, less than 24 hours after the Whites extended their lead in the table with a victory over Recreativo Huelva. Congratulations Gonzalo. Yesterday's win reaffirmed Madrid's spot atop the league. I am very happy. It was an important victory, we're now five points ahead of second place, and it served as a huge moral boost heading into Wednesday's Champions League match. We achieved what we wanted, so now we're only thinking about Roma. The only bad news is Robben's injury. It's a shame. I didn't see the play because I was warming up on the touchline. We have to give him all our support and help so that he can make a speedy recovery. Can you say anything in regard to the referees? That's not a matter for me to discuss. I live and breath football. I'm not worried about the matter. We just think about playing. I don't get involved with referees. Was yesterday's victory important heading into the next match against Roma? Absolutely, very important. We have to think about Wednesday's match and we only have two days to prepare for it. They will be looking to defend the first leg result, but we have to remain calm and try to score. You know the officials who refereed last night. What did you think about their performance? I never have and never will talk about the referees. Schuster left last night's press conference when asked about the referees. Doesn't that show a little lack of respect? You have to ask him. He was a great player and he lives football day in and day out. He doesn't have to discuss the referees. He loves talking about football. Were the fans responsible for the 1-1 equaliser? No (laughs). We scored it. The fans are extremely important, and they'll play an important role on Wednesday because they push and we need their support. Barça lost, so it was a great day overall. Everything turned out well. We were losing and Barça were winning, but we turned it around and so did Atletico. We have to continue working hard because we've got important matches ahead. Those of us on the bench were getting updates from the Calderón. You must have seen the highlights of the Atletico-Barcelona match. Your thoughts on Agüero? Is Kun better than Messi? We all know how good Agüero is. There's no need to talk about him. They are both young players with bright futures. I hope they keep playing as well as they are. I am happy that Agüero had the chance to play a great game. Did you see his goals? He had a solid game. He scored and provided two assists. I am sure he'll go very far if he keeps it up.- Rihanna
